For what it is worth Greg Denham on SEN stated that the original VISY deal was a 3 year contract running from 2008 to 2011, this agreement was extended for a further year until 2012. This banning of the VISY deal is related to the AFL not permitting Paul Connor's application for a new 2 year extension of the arrangement. He also said that the application has been with the AFL for a number of months and that the club/Connor's were only informed on Oct 22 that the new application was declined - raising questions about the timing of the ruling considering the Tippett saga.

So in effect the AFL aren't breaking any contracts, they just aren't approving contracts/arrangements which they have done previously.

So joining all the dots, Judd and Tippett's deal were broadly similar, and we were smart enough to check with the AFL first given our history, but now that they have to hit Adelaide with a stick they can't renew Judd's deal without it raising a few eyebrows.

AFL are pushing their luck. Draft and salary cap, while good for the competition, are restrictive but far enough but once you start restricting a player's ability to earn a dollar outside of football that's as restraint of trade as you get. I thinking more "when" rather than "if" that the 3rd party component of the salary cap (as distinct from the Cap itself) will end up legally challenged in court. There's no way the AFL would win. A gun player's image is worth alot to a company hence why they pay alot.

Swann gave a little hint that route might be investigated.

It's a poorly written article that suggests that the original Judd deal is still running, however, the new ruling only applies to new arrangements.

No, just offer him "opportunities after football", apparently that's fine

Thanks for that info Ciccio. That puts that to bed now. Lets hope it's a level playing field and they scrutinise other clubs like they seem to do with us.

When it comes to the AFL it's anything but a level playing field where all clubs are treated equally....

They may as well put this bloke in charge.

Actually that was Brad Hardie's missus who was paid $100K to be a secretary at Western Oval. No wonder they went broke.

I have heard the same thing about Darren Jarman at the Hawks.

The thing that I think will be interesting is how the AFLPA and the playing group as a whole react if the afl does 'crack down' on these third party payments. There's 150 odd third party deals at the moment and it looks like the AFL isn't going to allow them anymore.

Problem is, when the CBA was signed these payments were approved by the AFL and the potential earnings outside the game no doubt would have been taken into account by the players and the AFLPA when they agreed to it. Some players will now have considerable earnings taken away from them, and I'd suggest they'd want a significant raise in the salary cap to compensate

Swann said this morning that the Visy deal had been extended a couple of times in the past but the AFL this time rejected the latest extension, get this, WITHOUT notifying the club the reasons why it was rejected. All the club received, late in October when 2013 contracts were basically done, was a 2 line notification stating that it was rejected.

This I find ABSOLUTELY & STAGGERINGLY unprofessional.

The club should NOT let this matter slide.

..the writings been on the wall for a long time, pretty much when Costa shot his mouth off in regards to geelong matching any GC offer to Gazza via 3rd party deals "like before".. ..this got squashed pretty fast, ditto the following year when Dee's said they'd organise a 3rd party deal to match the cash for Scully..

..am pretty sure Judd's was the last of the 'big 3rd party deals'..

note - not including K.Hunt's AFL paid and approved "marketing role"

Would you expect anything less of Adrian "Chester" Anderson.

I hope Juddy offers to forfeit the extra payments if they can't overturn the decision. He's obviously made a truck load of money off the club I the last 5 years and would like to think he'll put the chance at a flag above a bit of extra cash.

On another thought, what's to stop visy employing Judd when he retires from footy and paying him as much as they like?

Agree with this if any appeal fails.

Anderson seriously comes across as an amateur. The regulations have changed? where can they read? Tightening of the rules in October when all the big contracts have typically been signed.

As KB said, Companies could pay anything for e image rights of a player, why is now any different?

The new regulations, if they exist, should only apply to new contracts, that is fair for all stakeholders.
