I loved his game against Essendon* in that final last year. Probably his best game for the club. In a way it was fitting for all his loyal service over the years that one of his best was in a winning final.

Thanks for everything if you're reading bret

was regularly embarrassed by his dummy spits when he got beaten. regularly embarrassed by thornton at a time when i was regularly embarrassed by the club. you can have your pride, even when you're getting smashed. yes, even when you're getting smashed week after week after week and you're in the back line watching the ball sail over your head.

got better in his later years, but still played that bullshit little chippy chippy game.

if anyone picks him up, he won't hurt us, just like he's never hurt anyone else.

good luck, brett, but seriously, carlton will not remember you.

Can understand the match committee's frustration with his dummy spits and lack of defensive pressure, also the excessive chip sideways mentality when played in defence, but realistically should have been played a lot more when injuries hit this year. His main problem was that the big issue with him a a forward was something that was/is well within his power to rectify - defensive pressure. It is not like he is slow as a a wet week or struggling with injury issues that curtail his ability to chase, he seemed simply not to get the message that this what was required of him. Fix that up and he would have been in the side regularly, which would heave been a win-win outcome.

For all of that, a fine servant of the club over some hard times and hard done by in the last couple of years, sad to see him go but completely understandable on both sides.
