A little bit more information about the infamous Neale Daniher Fax before the 1993 Grand Final has come out over the last week.

It is a fascinating story.

Neale Daniher had been studying our centre square set-up during the season and the week before the 1993 Grand Final he sent a fax to the Essendon* Football club letting them know what Carlton did.

As Parkin has said, at the centre bounce Williams would basically take two players (his tagger and someone else), and the plan was for Harry to tap the ball down to the other Carlton players in a set rotation. Parkin said he was surprised no-one picked it up earlier and that he had been using it for several years.

Anyway, when sending the fax Daniher punched in the wrong number and by chance it fell into the lap of a Carlton supporter. Daniher found out and threatened legal action against the supporter if he told the CFC about the fax. The supporter never told the club.

On the day of the game Essendon* had the first 6 or so centre clearances and the game was as good as over early on.

Apparently on the Monday after the GF loss this supporter rang Parkin and insisted they meet for a chat. As you could imagine Parkin was in no mood for this type of thing but eventually agreed to meet the guy.

Parkin said they met in the social club and the supporter salved his guilt and told the whole story, apparently the supporter was close to tears when telling him. Needless to say Parkin was pretty stunned.

It is an amazing turn of events.

Still some questions though.

Who is the supporter? Does anyone know?

And what would you have done in the same situation?

I would have had no hesitation in telling the club, et tu Blue Sombrero? - we should have won that flag and would have and i reckon the club would have backed you. But what a great story to tell the grand kids and imagine the satisfaction that it would have given you!!

Parkin is walking to Kokoda Trail during June, but we've got some time with him after he returns.

I remember listening to that game on the radio and feeling sick. The Bombers had a knack of working us over in that period, (much like we have it over them now), and I knew deep down, (even though I didn't want to admit it), that Essendon* would beat us on the big day.

After I stood in for Sir Francis Drake and rorted the Spanish Armada, and after I singlehandedly defeated the Boer, and after I wore my Winston Churchill outfit and Never Surrendered. Then I ran on in every Carlton Grand Final victory as the invisible man and kicked the winning goals. Amen

Remember attending the final training session before the game where Peter Dean trained the house down. Later that night, when i heard the team, i had a feeling we were going to struggle. Parkin and the match committee played it too 'safe' by going with Powell and Sholl and overlooking the likes of Dean and Kouta. :?

And I think a kid called Stephen Oliver - may well have been one of those mercurial shooting star match winners that day.

Stop spreading rumours, Beatle.
The reason I didn't go to the club is that I was in Ireland at the time playing rugby. We won one and lost two but that's another story.
I think I saw Setanta O'hAilpin playing hurling in the Cork U7s while I was there. He was tall even then but his beard was woolier.
I have steadfastly denied for the last 14 years that I ever received a fax with the Carlton ruck setup in it and I do so again.
I was forced to watch the game replayed on the big screen on the QANTAS flight from London to Melb. I had a bulkhead seat and it was two feet in front of my face. I still have nighmares about that flight.

This plus Dean's foot and Sos's fingers not being visible to the Umps show the world was against us that day.

Scumbags.

I actually thought the supporter had passed the fax on to Parkin and our coaching staff, but they chose to ignore it and proceed as normal.

I would have smacked Danniher in the mouth and driven straight to the club with the fax in my injured hand for Mr Parkin to peruse...

Here are my telling moments of that fateful day...

* It all started with Ms Burrumba ballsing up the national anthem.
* They played a poofy version of our club song when we ran onto the ground (I knew then...)
* Hanna got bashed by that bitch who karma took care of in '99.
* That other bitch ran too far and SOS touched the ball but they paid the goal anyway coz the umps hate us.

Seriously though, Sholl, Powell and Athorn? C'mon...

I remember 1993 so well. Early that year dustin fletcher played a school game against my school instead of playing for the Dons. I knew this was my opportunity to help out my beloved blues who i suspected would meet the dons later that year in the finals. During the game I tried my best to injure fletcher by headbutting his elbow. Unfortunately my eye socket was not strong enough and it opened up a nice gash instead of breaking fletcher's elbow as intended. I always felt to this day that I could have done better. No Dustin, no FB, someone else to play on Kernahan, team balance all messed up for the Dons - victory for the blues. Sorry guys... if only my head was stronger.

But I did make amends. Earlier that year when I used to baby sit little Jakey and his brother while his dad was busy playing with the big boys, I insisting to jake's dad that he should have a rest during some of the games in the forward pocket instead of hogging the centre all the time... in other words throw "the dog" a bone so to speak. Fast forward two years (1995) and he took my advice. That dog killed em, the dad kicked 5 goals and earned himself two medals ... and the rest is history.

Yeh Kernahan might have kicked 14 that day if Fletcher hadn't played...just enough to get us over the line

I was remembering this the other day.
Dean had a R foot or ankle injry and the whole training session he was running freely but kicking with his left. It looked like he'd be out. Then the last 10 min he started kicking with his right and the crowd cheered every kick. I was sure he'd be a starter.
Kouta trained strongly also.
Jon Dorotich was retiring that season and I ma sure that if coaches were reversed Sheedy would have played him to provide some biff.

Its still the one that got away.

BTW Tim Watson has admitted that SOS made contact.
