Really disappointing to read the Sticks/Gleeson story - footballers running marketing departments...sheesh!!

from my professional point of view what they did was go from using a 'sans serif' typeface in the older style one (my preferred of course), to using a 'serif' typeface on the new monogram/logo.
the older one would definitely have been preferred at the time largely for practicality, as the technology in those days would've made it too difficult to apply the more intricate 'serif' style (as also seen in the original club monogram wreath logo) onto the guernseys.

The change was always going to happen. This is the 21st century and the clubs need insignias/icons that reflect it.
Just be thankful it wasn't a big change.

My bet is the yankees will eventually update, typographically speaking, their logo aswell, as an alternate in the least.
and to whoever mentioned that Coca Cola, Ford, Apple, Virgin or McDonalds wouldn't do it - well they ALL have, regularly, as a matter of fact, you should take closer notice.

The old one is outdated and daggy the new one is not. We don't need to keep the geriatrics happy...they are locked in Eddie....we need to appeal to kids which we have a far greater hope of doing with the modernised logo..with or without notches. There is no contest..... the new one is heaps more attractive...especially to the youngens.

The ''new'' one is what it is, an imitation of the MONOGRAM this club wore to glory. As in imitation it looks cheap and second rate.

So there TBM !!! Nyaaaa

:)

I'd love them no matter what....as long as they are navy blue with a contrasting white logo in the middle.....logo can change as the fashions do that's ok with me.

When I see our beautiful crest in all it's glory (notches, wreath and motto) I get shivers down my spine. When I look at the 'modern' (circumcised) version I feel uneasy and have a sense that somethings not quite right.

We get excited over two little bumps, two big bumps really get out attention.

The bumps/notches/serifs ARE VERY IMPORTANT to the design! Do not underestimate the power of these small little graphic elements!

It's a Freudian thing...

They change the whole look and feel of the logo... in my opinion for the worse.

There was a reason they were there in the first place.... they serve a visual purpose. (help define shape, give a centre reference point for eye as it moves down the C, gives the design balance like a rudder on a ship, and gives it a more heritage character).

Ok...IMHO the design doesn't need to have it's shape defined, it doesn't need a central reference point for the eye to rest on, it doesn't need a rudder, and it doesn't rely on being heritage to be a powerful image, although heritage feel does sometime enhance things.

But that's just a girl in the outer's opinion, not from a trained design perspective.

That's fine, you're not into design so you don't really care.

I'm into design and this is something that irritates me, like a food critic would be irritated if the flavor of his meal is not quite right!

Another comparison might be when I go to see a band with my mate. He's a musician so can hear all the missed notes, while to my untrained ear it sounds fine. But thing is I respect my mates opinion because he know more about music then me...

This could explain our membership numbers...what is it 600-700,000 people identify as Carlton supporters in Australia, but membership is only 44,000. Maybe the other 660,000 are disgruntled grpahic designers?
