I'd like to see Rohan Kerr continue you get game time during the Nab Challenge, really thought he showed something at Etihad the other night.

Good news, Steven Icke on SEN just confirmed that Lachie Henderson will be back for this game.

I reckon selection for this match will give a strong indication of MCs thinking for round 1. They'll want the team settling now, especially backline, learning to play with each other.

Of the newbies I'm thinking Collins, Duigan and Watson will have big roles to play and be in the first 22.

HB: Russell Bower Yarran
CC: Lucas Murphy Simpson
HF: Twomey Casboult Collins
FF: Walker Waite Garlett

RR: Warnock Gibbs Judd

Int: Hampson Duigan Robinson Thornton Curnow Ellard

Sub: Davies Joseph

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Why not?

White - Underdone, too late in the pre-season to give him consideration for round 1 which will be the focus for the two remaining matches. On the other hand if he can play out both games and play a game in the VFL in the week off, he may be considered, but only in a forward role.

Scotland & Betts - Deserving of a rest

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Why?

Thornton - Can plug a gap at either end, including the defensive forward role; with Carrazzo, Houlihan, Henderson & O'hAilpin all looking unlikely for round 1, there's going to be a few different looks and faces in the CFC forward line.

Davies - Provides an opportunity to rest one of Laidler, Bower, Yarran or Armfield who have played most of the minutes on offer this pre-season.

Joseph - With Tuohy still looking a bit off the pace and unlikely for a rookie nod, he's our #3 small defender and a defensive workhorse in midfield so he needs minutes.

Casboult - Last man standing.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Other possible exclusions?

In order: Bower, Gibbs, Murphy for a little R&R on Friday afternoon, with White to come in.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Position battles?

3rd marking option - Collins/Thornton/Robinson/White/Lucas/Walker

Defensive HF - Robinson/Twomey/Walker/Thornton/Ellard/White/Yarran/Lucas/Scotland/Joseph

CHF - Thornton/White/Casboult/Waite

FF - Walker/Waite/Casboult

Inside mid - Gibbs/Curnow/Robinson/Ellard

Secondary small defender - Yarran/Joseph

Obviously I think some of these names will feature in the team for round 1 regardless, but the forward structure could be anything at the moment, perhaps with Walker at FF, Waite at CHF and reliable 3rd marking option, or retaining Walker as the 3rd option with defensive responsibilites and dropping another tall into the mix; it goes on.

The defensive forward option has quite a list of names of different speeds, shapes and sizes but if we're sticking to the prototype set by Carrazzo & Houlihan then Yarran, Lucas, Walker, Scotland and perhaps Twomey are the likely types.

At stoppages, we know that Ellard can do a job, Gibbs has a natural ability in the clinches, Curnow was recruited specifically for this and Robbo is a nutter. No one expects these blokes to give Judd a chop out, but if they can do some of the dirty work for him we'll be a better team for it. Joseph is perhaps a smokey in that role.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Possible moves?

Russell/Yarran/Armfield to midfield - With some medium & small defenders on the team sheet, there's an opportunity to experiment with some sharp kicking/running and defensive application in midfield, as we're currently looking to the same old crew to mind their opposition.

Half of the team to defensive HF - We're likely to see more experimentation in that position than a house full of drunken uni students.

Twomey to HB - spent some time there at WAFL level and seems to something of a Scotland clone; worth a look.

Hampson to CHF - Won't pan out in the season proper given Casboult's lack-lustre ruck work, but they could both use a half in the other's position to refine their weaknesses.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Still in the mix?

Kerr, Watson & McInnes are still thereabouts for round 1 if required, and as 1st & 2nd year players they are being spelled to manage their workload as much as anything else.

Our real injury/rehab list reads more like:

Henderson, Kreuzer, Carrazzo, McLean, Mitchell, Houlihan, O'Keeffe, O'hAilpin
