Cons
I use to blame the defenders, but have they got any options? They chip it about and lose control time after time, but is there any movement in the mids and forwards for them to work to? I saw little offering for them in time on periods yesterday, and it has seemed much the same in several games this year. Our quality mid field takes time off at the end of quarters too often IMO. If they are tired, that's what rotations are for.
I agree graeme.
If there are no options ahead, do supporters want to bomb it long to the opposition, to a pack?
That's OK, but if no one is presenting up ahead and we have players presenting behind or on the side with a view of taking the ball around the pack ahead, I can't see anything wrong with that.
Sure the old "when in doubt bomb it long can create opportunities" has some credence, but it is a case of Russian Roulette when we don't have the talls who win the contested mark more than not ahead of the ball, (let alone on our list), and the opposition are stacking their backline or creating clusters or forward pressure.
Kerna and Swan McKay were on different Team lists from bygone eras. They were great pack marks. We just don't have dominant pack marks today, although we may in the future with our developing players like Kreuzer, Jacobs, Henderson, Hammer, Warnock, etc, but they are not reliable at the pack mark right at this moment.
If Ratts tells them to kick long to a pack, that's another story.
