Everything is amplified with JR. Anytime he makes a mistake it's plastered with big neon letters "JR SUX!!!", while on the flipside anytime he has a decent quarter (or kicks a goal for that matter) it's a big ol love-in.

God forbid if we praise a player for doing well. :yikes:

Yeah nah, it's a bit more than that. This thread being a perfect example.

If JR continues his current output from here on, I'll be happy when he's out of the team, so long as it's because better players have displaced him. But if he keeps getting a game because there's no one to come in for him, then it's hard to get angry at the bloke.

Couldn't have put it better myself.

Most definitely. If he's a marginal player, then hopefully he will be in and out of the senior team as better players take his spot. If he's better than marginal, he'll cement his spot eventually through his own good skills and efforts.

I had my first dig at Russell last week, saying he has had enough chances to make an impact. He was one of our best yesterday and helped get us back into the game. If he does that every week there's a spot for him in the team.

Considering his game yesterday, this is an ordinary thread.

Russell played well yesterday. He tried to impose himself on the game when things weren't going well for us at all. He was an important part of us getting the four points yesterday. Being dropped seems to have given him a boost, and hopefully he builds from this level of performance. I hoping he (deservedly) stays in the 22 for the rest of the year.

If his form goes south, then let him go back down to the twos. If his form is good, let him play for the Blues. I don't see how one player can generate so many comments, especially after a good effort like at Subi.

Russell like Wiggins like Bannister like Armfield etc will play one good game in six and then have some ordinary ones in between....thats not good enough IMO and you cant carry players who cannot be consistent with skills, decision making etc.

Russell cant command a regular game and thats probably because he doenst have a regular position to play in....when Walker, Waite, Robinson return I dont see him being a senior player.
Good clubman and tries hard but he will need a lot of luck to make it IMHO....

I know this is a JR thread but don't lump Army in with those others.

Army's played only 20 games and it's arguable that the role he plays doesn't suit.

Yes his disposal is ordinary atm but given his other attributes should be given time to improve.

JR stepped up on Sunday when the going got tough in the 2nd qtr. Great to see.

He's been very fortunate compared to others with the senior time he's been given, no doubt.

Armfield couldnt hit a target from 10 metres away in the Freo game and then repeated the same kick about 5 minutes later.
Freo are a low pressure team and while armfield can improve i think he will fall short vs the better teams when the heat is on..

Dont get me wrong I like his approach , his willingness to run hard and put himself in but he isnt a 18 year old and has been a regular WAFL player before coming to us....i think its going to be hard for him to improve to the level where you could rely on him in the heat of the battle vs Geelong or Stkilda and thats what we need...Freo are shite and I wasnt impressed with Armys work vs them...
Army's saving grace is his leg speed which we lack and i think thats helping him get games which he might not if we were better equipped in the pace dept....

fair enough ..I too have got question marks over his future ..I just haven't stamped his papers like I have some others ..20 games is too early to tell in Armys case IMO

Ok. I was clearly trying to state my preference out of two of our players.

Before you go mentioning positions, I was more referring to football nous, athleticism, crap like that. Not rebounding from defence or finding space on the wing.

I was just saying that if I had to choose between the two, who I'd prefer. Just like comparing Bannister and Wiggins or Stevens and Houla.

In all truth though, I'm overseas - didn't even see the game (and therefor didn't mention of) but that said, one game doesn't make a player.

You think he's taken the next step? Good for you and a pat on the back for JR.

Think he's hopeless? All the more power for speaking your mind in a very difficult environ/forum.

I have my opinion and I posted it just because I was bored and on holidays. Should have known it would become a shitcanning thread... And to think that if TalkingPlayers was still around it would have been moved and forgotten.

Peace out.

There is the start of your thread....

now...after all this discusssion, you say

Now..you are very welcome to your opinion of any player..

but your thread came on the back of a good game by JR and a good game by setanta...so everyone has a reasonable expectation that your post relates to this particular game.

Given the postings over the last few years on Jr...then yes you should have.

Fair call MrsC, I honestly was not aware that JR played such a decent game, I was on the train to jungfrau mountain in the Swiss alps when the game was being played. :)

Of course I followed the game from my mobile but all I heard was that he kicked a 50 metre bomb. And I also should have known the response.

My post, although short - was inflammatory and not good form...

...that said, whatever Melvey said that had to be edited would have been rich considering the attitude of the person indicated.
