From the 20 minute mark in the first quarter we lifted our intensity and we tightened the screws. They scored 1 more goal in the first and the first of the second, but we did gring them down. I thought we were going to win and it was the whole team which lifted

PROS

Gibbs
Setanta
Judd
Carrazzo
Thornton
Hammer and Kreuzer had Sandilands worried and beaten after the 10 min mark.
I picked a 14 point margin, but preferred 10 goals. We had 10 more shots at goal.
We should play finals.

Walker for Johnson
Scotland for Bentley
Warnock for Fisher
Bower for Armfield
Robinson for Garlett

and next year add Waite, Trade coup and First round draftee.

CONS

Intensity
Goal kicking
Fisher, Bentley, Johnson, Garlett
Anderson not playing
We won against the bottom team
Top 4 spot is out of the question.

PROS

Setanta - been great since he came back in, improving every week. Still made plenty of little mistakes - I'd expect him to improve continuously from now on as he settles into the position. Nice to see Fev supporting him this week

Russell - Great return - got us back into the game along with

Judd and

Gibbs - beautiful game. Buckley-esque. Has to prove he can excel and be attacking in higher-pressure games

Thornton also very good apart from one blemish

Carrazzo was excellent - with Stevo and Scotty out really stepped up in a more wide ranging role

When we had numbers at HF shared it beautifully along the flank. In the 3rd we too often bombed long when we had time to spot options

No Stevens - good to see the team get freshened up a touch - Russell was better than 80% of Stevo's games this year

CONS

Army - well he's not good enough at the moment - his kicking has gone backwards since the start of the year

Austin - one of my faves, and better today, but undisciplined and some terrible handball errors

Fisher - tried hard and took a few marks but it's the usual crap after that - slow, no recovery, can't kick. Shame because I always liked him

Bentley - seems to get in the right spot at times, and has the body for it. But I can't really see it.

Fev's kicking - His accuracy drop-off has cost us games and will continue to.

Backline - struggling a bit

Disgraceful first 20 minutes

Joey coming off the boil since the break - Ballantyne exactly what we needed

Garlett and Betts too quiet

Pros:

The Irishman.

Judd .

Gibbs - stood up massively. We lose today if Gibbs had a quiet one.

Cons:

Fev's kicking

I'm a JR basher and I will concede he played well today. Worked hard. Hit the packs hard. Ran hard. Kicked the goal he needed to kick. No complaints here - I won't nit pick the bad stuff. Well done JR.

When Setanta was doing his own little intense celebration after his 4th goal....the big Fev just came and jumped on him :) I'd love for the big Irish to become a big part of this team and for everyone to embrace him again cos he is moving and jumping like nothing I've seen.
Gibbs.
Judd.

Con

I was nothing but an uninformed and ignorant supporter when i wrote Setanta off.....I suck.

- FEV - It wasn't going his way today, some errant kicking, no love from the umpires but he didn't crack the sads, kept presenting all day and when the game needed to be won in the last he didn't try to win it off his own boot with low % pot shots ; executed some very clever passes to teammates in a better position that lead to GOALS.

Cons.
Armfield, love his effort but foot skills are below AFL standard.

Pros.
Judd, Murph, Gibbs

Not throwing in the towel when 6 goals down

The Perth Blues fans. Bloody awesome support and helped the Blues/Yellows when it mattered.

Joining in with others singing the song at the top of our voice watching the purple haze leave the ground.

I'll take a poor win any day.

Agree although Garlett will be better with a pre-season behind him.

Pros:

We won
Enjoying the reports on Carzazos game. He is one of my favourites. Smart player.

Con:

Won't see the game till later in the week.
We were obviously poor early.
Freo fielded a very weak team. So perspective.

Quite right. You'd think people would be satisfied with a really good performance from JR and leave it at that rather than rubbing the "naysayers'" noses in it. I guess people are hard to please.

FWIW I've been willing JR to succeed as much as any CFC fan

Pros
- Gibbs
- Judd (yet again)
- JR silencing his knockers. Well Done.
- ditto Setanta
- Carazzo
- Thornton
- no injuries plus Stevens, Scotland and Browne all waiting in the wings. Robbo to return from suspension in the VFL next week so our depth has suddenly improved.

Cons
- Bentley. FFS I thought we had moved on from the dark days of Paganism.
- Armfield. Disposal not good enough for AFL.
- Fisher ineffective.

Pros

We won
We beat the purple haze
Juddy - tackling machine
Carlos - his 4th goal fist pump was nice to see followed by Fev jumping all over him.
Gibbs
Carrots
JR
Tex - starts his recovery in the Ants this week.

Cons
The 1st 20 minutes - putrid
The umpiring - goodness I hate them

We won (interstate)!
Another week closer till Andy Walker's return.
JR seemed to have a good game
Didn't see the first quarter

Con
Didn't get to see any of it on tv as not on free to air here in Tassie.

JUDD / GIBBS / MURPHY -
Was the reason they played so well because of certain players being left out?

SETANTA -
Great game. Has been finding some decent form over the past few weeks. Your always going to be a good side with a leading CHF. We can't (but so often do) rely just on Fevola alone.
Fisher isn't cutting it and Waite is injured.
I know Setanta is capable of better, but if he only gatthers 12-15 possesions and kicks a goal or two each game then he is much better off in the team than out of it.

CARRAZZO -
Best game of the season?

INTENSITY RETURNING -
Is this just a co-incidence that the best games we've played this year are the ones that Nick Stevens is not playing in?

WA CROWD -
Pat yourselves on the back guys. You looked awesome out there.

CONS:-

RUSSELL LOVERS CALLING FOR BLOOD -
Calm down guys! I'm really happy for him that he had a good game.
I HAVE always said i don't think he's up to it (and still think that) but i've NEVER said that i don't want him to make it NOR have i ever questioned his desire or love for the Carlton Football Club.

Mike Sheenan said it well in the paper today..........
Quote:
He can find the footy, Russell, but he can bugger things up, too. Fortunately for him, the coach maintains the faith.

Good luck to him. I hope he backs it up next weekend. But mine, and a lot of other supporters on this site have been validated in asking questions.

1ST QTR.
Terrible Terrible Terrible. It really sours the win when we play the way we did. And we do this so often. Last time we played Freo, it was the exact same story (except this time we 'snatched' a win!) and the Saints game was lost due to our poor start.
At the moment, we are an OK SIDE, and will probably just be making up the numbers come finals time. But we can be SO MUCH MORE!!!!! And i'm not talking potential either. We have what it takes to be a top 4 side.
We are better than the likes of Essendon*, Collingwood, Brisbane and Adelaide yet we sit below them on the ladder.
WE SHOULD BE HIGHER!

BENTLY -
Can't understand how he got his first game, certainly can't understand him getting another chance.

AUSTIN -
Needs a run in the two's again.

Pro: I can watch On the Couch, Footy classified and the10HD show tonight

People who are saying Austin should go back to the seconds should relax. The guy has played a handful of games. He's allowed to make mistakes. He is going to develop a lot faster in the 1sts.

Agreed on Aussie - I thought he played okay and wouldn't contemplate dropping him. Keep persisting with him as he has a really good footy head.

Pros

2nd youngest team in the AFL running around on the weekend by a long way. In fact, we're 2 and a half years younger than the top teams per player.

50 inside 50s after quarter time to 30.

30 scoring shots to 17 after quarter time.

The ability of a young group to come back from a 34 point deficit. Obviously they must have faith in the game plan and each other. :smoking:

After being smashed by Sandilands earlier in the year, our ruckmen worked him out and did a number on him. Yet last week some posters were whingeing that we dont learn from our previous encounters.

Juddy getting back to his best.

Plenty of scoring opportunities without Fev or Eddie starring.

Cons. The sooky la la brigade not seeing the forest for the trees. :donk: NO Waite, no Stevens, no Scotland, no Walker and yet a bunch of kids are preparing to play finals footy after 7 years in the gutter.
Go Blues.
