CB, I'll pay the $150 to see another scummer walk out of the G with a sour look on his face - It'd be cheap at twice the price.

You blokes should be ashamed of yourselves - I don't wanna know any more.

I feel so disgusted right now :o .

A friend of mine just told me over the weekend that she no longer supported Richmond. After 35 years and full support, even rattling tins for the 'save our skins' she's had a gutful. I couldn't believe it, but welcomed her anyway to the side of good.

She told me she'd chosen the Saints :o .

Well after 25 years of being beaten around the head with failure and mediocrity would you have expected her to choose any one else.

Schadenfreude thread?

Lots of those scum supporters still have sand in their collective vaginas about last November 24, don't they   Almost worthy of a thread by itself.

You know what's funny?

Essendon* fans feeling smug and clever when labelling Carlton salary cap cheats.

Interesting comment. I would subscribe to opposite point of view for all the reasons I have stated above. In fact I think any Western Australian who supports a Victorian, South Australian, Sydney or Brisbane team is the worst kind of supporter there is.

Is this the same for SA, NSW and QLD supporters? Should all SA supporters go for the Crows or the Power? Should anyone in Sydney automatically go for the Swans? Your logic is flawed on this point in particular.

Changing teams is soft. This guy is an idiot.

Jeeves, your line of thinking is exactly what the AFL wants. For Sydney residents to support only the Swans, Brisbane to support only the Lions etc.

It's a shallow and ridiculous logic, and is the cause of why support for AFL dives in Sydney when the Swans become crap.

Actually I was talking about Western Australians only but I could include SA supporters in their too. The reasons being historical and the rivalry built up between SA, WA and Victoria over a very long period of time. (See my post. This is the context of the comment I made)

Jeeves wrote:
[Now we get to a matter close to my heart. As a long time supporter of western Australian football it used to break my heart to see WAFL teams raided of their star players year after year and then turn around and watch those same Western Australians pull on the Big V and contribute to the humiliation of WA footy (pre State of Origin). So when State of Origin came around and those players pulled on the yellow and black of WA and then beat the invincible Vics it was the greatest feeling in the world. Finally in 1987 we could field our own team in the VFL and watch our star players week in and week out competing against Victorians and watch them do it with pride. Prior to the Eagles people over here did support a Victorian team (me included) but it wasn't with passion it was with interest. Interest in how our local boys were going. Yes we used to watch the winners. It was a great highlight package and again we could watch Buzz taking mark of the year and kicking the goal of the year or marvel at the skills of Leon Baker et al. Our interest was borne by the fact that that was the only way we could watch our best WA boys week in week out. Then along came the Eagles and the flood to Victoria slowed and our boys stayed here to play for our team. You say there is no historical significance in the Eagles. Well I beg to differ. Each player who pulled on the Eagles jumper in those early years was representing over 100 years of football tradition in this state.

Generally speaking the majority of footy followers from Queensland and NSW don't have that history and really no ties to their own state competition and players so if they go out and support other teams outside of their state then that is understandable.

I can relate to all the people who are saying that you should never change teams - all Blues fans can.
But when all is said and done, all rules of loyalty and staunchness are null and void in this case because the club about to be abandoned let Collingwood win a Grand Final.

The fact that he has already become a member is merely a changing of the guard. He won't be the first, and certainly won't be the last.

As for my personal thoughts re changing from Carlton to Essendon* - here's a quote from the movie Young Guns, "I'd rather drink turpentine and piss on a brush fire!"

To this day I can't reconcile anyone changing allegiance like that.

What if your son was drafted to a team other than Carlton.

I'm the type of Carlton supporter who hates your club with a passion.

I can remember what it was like in Sydney before Sth Melbourne were transplanted. People followed particular teams in the old VFL for probably three main reasons:
1. Expats from Victoria who had a traditional loyalty
2. Watched Aussie Rules on TV and picked a team that were either successful or liked their style of play (why there are/were lots of Carlton and Hawks supporters here because they were dominant teams in the 70s before the Swans). In the 80s these teams drew the largest Swans crowds.
3. The VFL/AFL club had similar colours or nickname to the rugby league club they followed - believe me this is not uncommon. For instance I know a Collingwood supporter who followed them because he followed the old Western Suburbs Magpies, and St George supporters who followed St Kilda.

I know many people who have stayed loyal to their original Victorian club. These people also go to Swans matches because it is an easy way to get a footy fix. Some have the Swans as a clear second side and wont watch them play their original Victorian club because of the conflict of interest it creates.

Others have jumped on to the Swans bandwagon. The reasons some people adopted a Victorian club were often superficial (see above) and I can sort of understand them changing particularly if their original interest was fairly nominal anyway. What I don't like are people who used to follow Carlton up here who have ditched them for the Swans because of the recent bad times we have had - now that is fickle/disloyal to me.

It will be interesting to see if there is a diminishing in Sydney people who following other teams over time. And as many people have pointed out, what crowd support will be like up here when the Swans have some bad seasons again?
