SOS is my favourite Carlton player of all time but he's not even on Ablett's level. You can't compare a defender's job with what a forward has to go through. Ablett was double and triple teamed his whole career, SOS, Sexton and Dean were doing the ganging up. Punching the ball or marking the ball, it's no comparison.

I don't think you do remember correctly...I think SOS' standout year was 1990 - in a pretty shit side...after that he really didn't do much...couldn't keep his feet - regularly had a bag kicked on him by Lockett and then spilled the beans to the ATO when he could have easily shut his trap Fraser Brown style.

As I mentioned - his 89 finals series was maybe the best ever by any player.

The bloke takes a stupid shot against SOS and all of a sudden according to this board he apparently wasn't much of a player :? . I know we are Carlton but let's get real - he's one of the greatest players to ever pull on a boot. Shame he couldn't be a tenth as good off the park as he was on it.

I agree he did a great job but at the end of the day he was still a defender. He used to bend the rules to his advantage and many non Carlton people believe he cheated with his excessive holding and they would have a fair argument. There is a reason Carey rates Jackovich as the best he played on.
Saints supporters could claim Baker owns Judd, Pistons fans could claim Dumars owned Michael Jordan. They all have a case but at the end of the day they are all negating players.

Not only was he one of the best defenders ever he performed well up forward.Just have a look where Abletts hand is in the picture in the Herald Scum.SOS gave as good as he got(think Dunstall Lockett Carey).Apart from a pre season night game he never really took us apart and that was on opponents other than SOS as well.I agree with others that on sheer ability Ablett was the best but i always thought he beat up on the weaker sides eg Richmond.

..without bein' too clued into footy history pre-birth, in regards to defenders of my lifetime (so far) the SoS had easily the best finals yr '95.. ..quite possibly (for a football ground position), he might have had the best season in the 95' finals of any player (that played a finals series in the same posi)..
