Jeez, Bondi. Good post but I reckon SOS was a bit lucky to get FB of the century. IMVHO, should have gone to one G. Southby.
Having said that, SOS was PFG.

BS, I grew up with Southby the unbeatable...I still toss the coin between Geoff and Steve....only the public award announced the winner, For me, they are both brilliant players and brilliant FB's. What about the guy before them? Big K. Hall....another premiership gem....what? and he's a Carltonian too? Well, I would never......

Both were superstars. Braddles hard run (until he was 107 years old) is something i reckon the kids should be aspiring to.

BTW the youtube footage of Braddles goal against West Coast - Silvagani gets the easy possession because of a hard shepard by one B Ratten. If Ratts can get the team to believe in those sort of things we will go a long way to no. 17

Wasn't the salary cap investigation sparked by Brown's claim for long-service leave? IIRC, that arsehole Allison put in a claim to the AFL. Instead of basing the figures on Brown's declared wages, Allison based it on his actual wages. Not surprisingly, the AFL seized on that as evidence of salary cap rorting. Although Allison then claimed he'd just made a mistake on the figures, and Brown refused to talk to the AFL, the genie was out of the bottle.

Is my recollection right?

Now that prick can not even wipe his own arse ,karma's a bitch Allison and so was ya dog of a mother for bringing scum like you into the world.I hate that prick and do not feel sorry for him one bit suffer you dog. :-D

Call Allison what you want RoK, but his mother. :(

Yes. Geoff Southby was a terrific full back. It is a toss up whether
SOS or he was the best.
We also had a very good one in the 40's - 50's. Ollie Grieve.
He was 2nd in the Brownlow from full back. That is not easy to do.
Nowdays it is impossible.

I have just done some stuff from the 1972 G/F. Southby was terrific in that game. He used to mark at full back instead of punching most of the time. It may be frowned on now, but he held the marks.
His kick outs were very long spiral punts.

No one ever came close to the counter attacking prowess of the great SOS. He played in a different era to Southby and revolutionised the full back position. He took it to a whole new level and by the time he was done, it wasn't just about beating your man.

Ahhh the Silvagni-Southby debate.

Out of the top 20 goalkickers of all time, SOS played against 7 of them, including 3 of the top 5 (Lockett #1, Dunstall #3, Ablett #5, Lloyd #9, S Rocca #12, Carey #17).

I reckon this puts him ahead of Southby IMO - but isn't it nice having to choose between the two!

Its not just the fact he played on them, he also had a fanstastic record on them.

Throw in Hird who he used to play on a bit in the late 90's and Stewart Loewe who he had some great battles with and its an impressive array of forwards SOS not only matched up against but consistently beat.

I remember although he started slowly due to injury, 2000 was one of his best years. He consistently took the best half forward out of the game and was a major part of our 14 wins straight.

And when we were in the shit we could throw him forward for the odd 8 goal haul.

I remember the Fremantle game in Perth was the day after Ben was born. They interviewed Col Kinnear after the game about SOS being prepared for the game after being up all night. Kinnear said something I agree with, SOS was a better CHB than Full-Back.

I reckon his only weakness was his pace and on a long lead he could be left behind, and even with his fantastic ability to get the fist in for a spoil from a seemingly hopeless position, that was the one way to beat him. It was harder to exploit that from half forward.

Remember he finished 3rd in the Brownlow in 1990 playing at CHB.

Collectively amongst all Carlton People I talk to is that their general opinion on one Wayne Carey is that we dont understand what all the fuss is about.

And that opinion is mainly due to the fact that when he played against Carlton he never took the game apart against us - mainly due to the fact that SOS always had his measure.

Carey owned Friday night footy in the 90's. It was worth watching just to see him tear games to bits in the 3rd quarter.

Glad he was never allowed to do this to us :-D

Peter Dean also had a wonderful record on Carey. He played on him in the first game in 95, a wet Sunday at the G. SOS only got his chance on Carey when Dean was unavailable for the later H&A clash.

and i guess that's a big part of it, SOS had so much support in that backline.

Deano, Macca, Sexton, Ang and SOS. All knew they could totally rely on each other at all times.

I've just realised that this is why I've always felt a little perplexed when people gush over Carey's footballing ability, because I can't remember ever seeing him take a game apart.
