If you started barracking for Carlton in the late 70's or even 80's, then that would help to easily narrow it down.
When I was growing up in the 60's, one name dominated all and that was BIG NICK.
Every team, every supporter, every media person was in awe of him. Saints had the crazy Carl Dietrich that sent fear to all comers. But Carlton stood tall and with him and because of his presence, the whole team stood tall. And so it was that Carlton was the toughest, coolest and most successful club since Melborne's domination in the 50's. Big Nick captained and Captain coached Carlton to 3 FLAGS.
Which brings me to the 2nd big name to wear the Dark Navy Blue; BARRASSI.
It's all history now, but it was BIG news in the fotball world with Barrassi atCarlton, and under his leadership, Carlton won 2 FLAGS, with Big Nick by his sides. We were scary with those 2 raging bulls on the field.
Under Barrassi and Big Nick we unearthed the boys of the 70's:
JEZZA (3 FLAGS)
Living Legend, say no more; captain-coached (the last one to achieve such a feat) a premiership. Played in 3 premiership teams and crackd the 100 goal mark and took the mark of the Century, as well as the 2nd best, 3rd...
WALLS
SOUTHBY
DOULL
CROSSWELL
McKAY
and many more...
Then that's when the boys from the 80's come into consideration as Bluebagger of the century like
DOMINATOR
SOS
KERNAHAN
BRADLEY
WILLIAMS
and so on...
Imagine what those who have supported the Blues since the 40's, what would they have to say about that?
It's a hard one. But the easiest way is to look at the easiest one:
someone who started at the club as a teenager and finished at the one club on top of his game well into his 30's. He played, captained and coached. He broke the record for number of games, suspensions (hence no Brownlows), finals, flags, goals, B&F votes...for Carlton...He's got a club B&F Medal named after him. It has to be
BIG JOHN NICHOLS
says it all ...doesn't it!
