Pratts plan is to ensure we're self sufficient and able to stand on our own before he leaves.

good call...Pratt came to the club and stated 'i could very easily open my bank account and clear the debts, but i want to put in a board who can prove themselves as competent enough to be able to generate large profits year in, year out. Simply bailing the club out of its debts is a short term bandaid fix, and we need business strategies in place so that we do not fall back into debt.'

or something along those lines....

I do, however, believe that when Mr. Pratt leaves the club and ends his tenure as President that he'll dive into the back pocket and pull out a lazy 5mil or so as a departing present...I legitemately feel that whether its the end of '08 or '09 or even later (doubt it though) that he should be given the respect, and thanks he deserves for steering the resurgance that we're seeing take place. Sticks Kernahan may be maligned on this board, but he put the club in perspective perfectly when he said 'we are carlton, flower the rest' and that comment has stuck hard in my mind ever since. We ARE Carlton, flower the rest...say it a few times and you'll realise just how true it is. We've had some tough times but we're now in the back half of the steeplechase and we're headed for the home stretch. Remember, for every action, there is an equal or greater opposite reaction. We've had 5 SHOCKING years which have hurt us all...but there's not long left until that is VERY different

Go Blues.

Can someone explain the bit about the AFL handout?????

I thought the only HANDOUT we got from the AFL was the $1.5m Smorgon begged for, which was to be paid back this year, but the HS mentioned a $2.2m handout.

That's what I want to know. The $1.5m was interest free so it isn't that and it was paid last year and included in last year's figures.

This $2.2m is another figure. Is this the money for the upgrade of Princes Park because the umpires are based there and TAC and VFL use the ground as well?

If that's the case, it is hardly a handout.

Anyone has the real story on this?

Don't quote me, but IMO I think the media is dressing it up as a handout when infact it would be a payment made to all clubs for the new TV rights deal.

Im not a financial advisor, but eradicating debt shouldnt be our priority- generating capital had to be, and Pratt and the baord (led superbly by Harrison, Fried, Moulton, Littman in particular) have done this fantastically.

The debt will only be eradicated when we are a money making machine-- good times ahead

Harrison and Moulton??????

Is this the normal time of the year to announce club profits?

Could there be a reason why this news is specifically announced now, this week?

Great news by the way. Blue skies.

maybe so that if they'd announced it when they announce the new massive sponsorship that this would be overlooked somewhat.

Synners,
Honestly i cant wait for your much anticipated foray into the carlton political scene...
its obvious that certain members of the board arent doing a good enough job (as evident from the meagre $6million turnaround this year). So just do us a favour and let us all know when you're gonna throw your hand up and finally fix things up once and for all.
You've got my vote mate

Ok lets just see what happens at the end of the year.... im pretty sure Pratt doesnt want a thirteen man board.......

And the turnaround is due to two men mostly.... Pratt... and Swann...

There is alot of deadwood on that board riding on tailcoats of others....

And dont get sarcastic .....

Whilst a profit is great, it will be more interesting to see what our net asset position is compared to last year.

But you asked "Harrison and Moulton???". There may be deadwood, but it isn't those two. For your information both have time consuming jobs, but for a number of months since they came on the board have given up a considerable amount of time in trying to fix up the club's problems. Not everyone can contribute in the way Pratt can, but Harrison and Moulton's achievements and efforts should not go unnoticed either. Maybe the "pub deal" wasn't as big as something Pratt orchestrated, but it is still going to generate significant revenue for the club. Further money that can go into the recruiting department, or player development, etc.

Synbad's right when he says we don't need 13 Board Members.

Until Smorgon decided to draft extra numbers onto the Board for political reasons, we had 8 directors. That was at a time when we had executive directors who were heavily involved in making administrative decision-making via various commiittees, so there was more justification for a greater number of directors.

Since Pratt and Swann have overhauled the administrative structure of the club, the directors are now non-executive directors. With an effective CEO, having too many cooks would threaten to spoil the broth. Idle Directors are more likely to become embroiled in attempts to impose their will on the administration to justify their o wn existence. Really, we don't need more than 8 and could operate with a handful of directors.

Prominent business figures don't need to be directors to contribute to our financial success. There are plenty of coterie members who are happy to help out without that honour.
