What should we do then when making a decision on future coaching appointments?

I dont know of the name of the next coach of Carlton, but I do believe that he will be a clean cut younger man with a young family and will also be a first time afl coach.

Most in the football world will regard the appointment as unremarkable, and it will come at a time when the best that can be said of our club is that it will be in a team building year.

In other words, for all Denis's efforts, probably still languishing in the bottom 4 on the ladder.

We will have been down so long, that people are actually beginning to pity us, the memories and resentments of our years as a power club will have become dormant the minds of most, but they will still be quite able to be aroused, and probably will if we are more successful than we ought to be..

The general feeling at the time of the appointment of new coach there is a very strong sense that finally, we will have sufficient although still very young talent to start a modest rise from the lower reaches of the ladder.

Pagan may well have left before the expiry of his contract to make way for the new coach. but it will be true to say that despite all the critisizm of Denis, he will have been the person that will have put everything in place.

But for whatever the reason he departs, he is no longer the man in charge to see the fruits of his coaching labours finally emerge. That honour will belong to his successor.

The first season for the new coach is one that takes place during a very bad war in the world, a terrible conflict that affects everyone in some way.

It may possibly be that the afl competition is modified somewhat as a result of the economic or other effects of this conflict, which is not yet a world war, but may well soon develop into one.

we have a year where we do show real promise and by actually end up at the end of the home and away matches, in the lower part of the final 8.

Then quite unexpectedly and to the surprise of all, Carlton is the beneficiary of an amazing run of good fortune during the finals series of that fateful year.

Regrettably, we are headed for some very scary times.

Many of the things that will make the near future times so scary are avoidable and totally unnecessary, but sadly there have been some extremely foolish and ignorant choices that have been made in the world.

Unfortunately, these choices will have quite serious consequences and carry a heavy price.

Many people will feel that they have been very badly let down by their government.

The world will be a changed place after the events that we will soon start to experience. (as a matter of fact these events have already begun, but they are only at an early stage)

Watching a Carlton resurgence will be a welcome diversion from these things.

I don't think we can rule SOS out as a coach because he is not a great special comments man.

I don't recall Neil Craig as a gifted special comments man prior to taking up coaching.

However, if SOS is to coach us, the reasons need to extend way beyond his playing ability and family ties. Wonder if Braddles would be his assistant?

because of restraint shown by western nations, it may not be an apocalypse in the cold war sense.

But it might be more of a 40 years in the wilderness kind of thing for us here.

On the credit side, Id say that Carlton will have won a few more flags though before the 40 years is up...

by wilderness, this may well mean a quite harsh economic wilderness for countries like Australia.

after all we have 500 billion in foreign debt, have sold off most of our assets and have become extremely reliant on overseas countries for all manner of goods. (but at least we had a good time doing it) .

Also, if history is any guide, we will be among the first to further commit ourselves to open ended armed conflict overseas as well, which will be a further economic burden to bear on top of everything else, especially if hostilities drag out into late into the next decade..

aside from this, the focus of the really unpleasant stuff will be in europe.

Forget his ability to make interesting comments on TV, what is SOS like when he's in a coaching role and the cameras are off?

I want someone who can genuinely outcoach our rivals.

If SOS is a capable tactician then I see no reason why he wouldn't be worth a shot.

And for what it's worth, I think the raving doomsayer is right. Bad times ahead.

what Carlton has gone through since 2002 is kind of parallel to what Australia as a nation will go through.

the thing that frustrates this raving doomsdayer most of all is that the thngs that need to be done to prevent these things from occurring are within our collective grasp, but we for some stupid reasons are failing to take hold of them.

it will be a very annoying thing to see that your economic future can be switched off and on by a raghead, and this was an outcome that could have been prevented.

fear is one of the big reasons for this, because fear breeds ignorance.

There's so much I could say...

I think the point is that if he's yet to demonstrate that he's a capable tactitician in his tv role, where he's paid to talk tactics and the like. Then why would we expect him to demonstrate it as a senior coach?
