To those who knock Bryce Gibbs, there are seventeen other clubs who would love to have him in their side. Maybe he's not the classic in-and-under player, but I liken him to David Rhys-Jones with his ability to find time and space, whilst then accurately passing (over short or long distances) to a team mate in a good position. The quality of his disposal is as good as anyone in the competition, and he is very much a team player.

Onto the game.

This is a match we should win by at least six goals.

St Kilda are missing key players, and lack pace and skill compared to our side. After Hayes and Dal Santo, their mid-field is average, and their defence was suspect before Fisher was injured.

A disciplined approach will see us home against a team that I hate being beaten by above all others.

Gibbs is an exit player. He is our pressure valve release. This is one of the most important positions in modern day football. The presses and rolling zones and all that other mumbo jumbo have made it in increasingly hard to hit up targets and find space coming out of the backline. Gibbs is better than anyone else in negotiating such situations. Gibbs plays a step ahead of the game. It would almost be a waste of his talent having him banged up and under packs.

Those who criticise him really dont understand that you need DIFFERENT types of players in the team and his worth is equal to that as Waite as a KPF and Murphy as a midfielder. You dont need to be getting it 30 times a game or kicking multiple goals a week, there are other players doing that. VITAL COG is Bryce.

You think Essendon* supporters are going nuts over Heppell not being played in the midfield? No and nor should they because hes bloody good at what he does ala Gibbs.

Can we all just accept this and move on.

Geez........... I've only just noticed the final team now (sorry - it's been Good Beer Week so ive been drunk most weekend!)

No Yazz is a massive shock? Perhaps he's not quite fit yet? He's speed and dash could have been the difference.

Thornton and Lucas dropped>>>? WOW! They kicked 5 goals between them last week? However in saying that, Lucas started well but did bugger all after half time. I thought Thornton did ok up forward though, but with Waite coming back we can't go too tall.
Bootsma will play again, so no point rushing him.

Big games for Bower and Armfield this week. Yes, Bower was good last week in probably his best game for the Blues, but he needs to back it up again this weekend.

At $4.05, the Saints are good value!

Are some of you blokes for real? How much footy have you played? Do you really understand how good these blokes are? How overweight, lazy and stupid are you as you sit there typing your vitriolic rubbish?

I was lucky enough to play some underage footy with a good mate of mine who went on to play AFL. The guy was just an amazing footballer really - fast, strong, skilled, committed, lived for his footy. He played maybe a dozen games. He didn't make it, he wasn't good enough.

For this reason I've always been reluctant to criticise AFL footballers too much.

Are some of them soft? yep? Do we have a handful in our team? Probably. So does evey team. But just about every bloke that runs out there has immense talent and they are not deserving of what is directed at them on here (and at games - I've only made it to maybe 10 games in my life and every time I leave disgusted at the insults thrown at Carlton players.... from Carlton supporters!).

Every player has their weaknesses.... Judd is not the best kick ever to have graced the field, Franklin gives away too many frees and misses too many goals, Jono Brown doesn't lay enough tackles, the list goes on.

I mean, I'd love a team of Koutas, but where does this obsession come from that every Carlton player must not have a single deficiency? Look at the premiership sides of the last few years... is every player perfect on those lists?

JR has deficiencies, I'm not his biggest fan. He seems to try pretty hard though. Is a good size and has reasonable pace. Injury has wrecked his last couple of seasons. Personally I think back to the elim final a couple of years back when he spent much of the game on Ryan O'Keefe. He kept him very quiet and I remember him taking 3 or 4 contested marks in the 3rd quarter (I think) and keeping us in it. I'd love to see him back to that form... the coaches I'm sure would love to see him back to that form... maybe that's why they are backing him and giving him a chance to find some form and fitness. You might disagree with that, but he's not deserving of being called a "pea heart".

Is Gibbs' attack on the ball like Robbo's? Nup, not even close. But so what? He brings other strengths that we need. I understand that it is a little frustrating that he maybe hasn't come on quite as quickly as we would like and he rarely dominates games. I believe that will come. You may not... but again, doesn't mean you should sit here calling him names...

I won't even start on the Carrazo one!

Waite back in the side should straighten us up this week. Betts and Garlett need to lift as they have been really poor in recent weeks.

With Bower staying in the side you would hope that this would release Gibbs to play a more attacking role this week.

Joesph on Milne is the logical matchup.

Not sure why youd worry about Milne .
Russell and just get russell to play more attacking.
Milne is one lazy fupp.!!!... Joseph is your tagger.
I wouldnt tag M/ilne id play someone head to head with him... that guy would be Russell.

Joesph is a very limited footballer who needs a job each week to maintain focus.

Joesph's skills by foot and hand are atrocious and you do not want him playing in the midfield where his turnovers prove to be very costly.

Joesph must stay in the back pocket until Yarran is right to come back in.

But you dont play Milne by tagging him.
You just expose his shortcomings.
He has lost a yard.
We should be strangling their inside 50s entries.
And he likes to lead.
You need someone bigger and faster and you have that player running and linking up forwards.
Sure ratboy can choose to stay at home.. but in all honesty we should smash them in general play.. and Russell can be a very important player linking up with the midfield if ratboy allows him.

Different if they have the control of the ball all game.

If that happens we have some serious questions hanging over our midfield.

I dont care if milne kicks 3 cheapies if Russell just helps load up with our midfield up the ground.... should be a thumping!!!

Hard to provide evidence when he rarely plays in the middle. Often he has more roles on game day than the runner does kilometers. With his talent, if he was penciled in to play in the centre for 22 games a year, I'm sure he would soon become an elite AFL midfielder. But at the moment Rats uses him in ways that are more beneficial to the overall structure of the team.

Regards Cazzesman

I don't know if "rarely" is the right term to use Cazz because I've seen him play in there quite a few times over the years....not played there mainly, but sporadically....and to good effect. Also refer to to Wikipedia quote too. We have the luxury to play him elsewhere with Judd, Murphy, Simmo, others in the midfield...said it before...we have midfield depth...otherwisw we'd need him there.

Got no idea why the MC didn't put him in the guts against GWS... we did have the defenders not playing out of their skin along with the mids....but I bet it wasn't because the MC don't believe he can play there.

We all have seen him play in the guts, and we've all seen him do well there. The efforts are etched in my head. Have a loook at his highlights reel. Just because he might not be an in and under like McLean doesn't mean he's not a good midfielder. Have a look at the Gibbs thread after he's had a bit of success in the guts...positive stuff. He evades tackles well, gets the nut as much as anyone else in there with the same opportunity and heads forward usually straight down the guts.

No doubt in my mind Gibbs can play midfield..RATTS says so...so does JUDDY....most of the world quote him as part of the midfield when referring to the Carlton midfield...evdespite that he may be playing as the loose man in defense. It's because he can play mid. He's just not an in and under type and neither was Craig Bradley.

I bet we see him play in the midfield in 2012, and I bet he plays well there too. Just as he has every year since he's started at the Blues. He's a damn good footballer. I hope we keep him for life.

Bryce Gibbs is an exceptional footballer, but he's no midfielder. The argument made that he could play anywhere he likes was lost last week against GWS. Why would you play Gibbs as loose man across HB for 97% of the game and not give him an opportunity in the middle when the team was getting smashed in the clearances? He can play two roles. The one he plays now, or forward of centre. He's still my 1st or 2nd player chosen every week...but I hate hearing the case being made that he's a mid when there's precious little evidence to back that up.

..i'd point to the 2nd half of the '09 season for some good, consistent midfield work from the Gibblet.. ..however, of late when used thru the middle his clearance work has been a little rushed.. ..i think because he's suck a good versatile player that he could easily be used in the middle, however like you i agree he's better individually and team-wise used outside the stoppages.. ..i prefer half fwd, but can understand [but don't neccessarily agree with] him being used as a kick behind play..

Thornton had 13 possessions, eight marks and three goals. Sure, it was against GWS but calling his performance terrible is laughable.

We had double inside 50s than GWS and BT had over 85% game time. Did he do the team things? Did he bring the ball to ground to our FPs? Did he lay tackles? He is not in the team for a reason.

From what i saw he played in the guts for the first quarter and a half. Only once he got switch back did the team begin to gel. He couldnt find space on ball and was wasted playing a game that we could have kept bentick to play. Once back he was impassable and the game opened up.

Given the results of the weekend - This game is a doozy - We win - Top spot , They win - they are in the Eight and very much amongst it.

We "should" win but then again we "should" have been 10 goals up at half time last week and "should" have beaten Essendon* in R4.

Its a sorry state of affairs when I am nervous playing St Kilda.

We need a tight tag on Lenny. If we can hold him to 60 dream team points I should scrape home with a narrow league win and stay top of the ladder.

That or Robbo to kick a bag.

2E on Milne would be great viewing.

Blues by 35-50.

Gibbs is a gun. Period.
