I'd hope he'd have a bit of a chuckle too ;-)

After all, I used Walks precisely because he is one of our top players and he has a strong footy background. Just shows that plucking out isolated examples is ridiculous.

Did you see Walks handball it in D50 straight to a Crow who slotted an easy goal? I just think we need to get rid of this idea of drafting guys from Echuca. What do Echucans know about footy?

I think you'll find that they are called "Echuc-onians"

I'm not sure whether the smaller running player (was it Murphy?) who was running on down the field called for the ball, but I do know that it looked absolutely terrible and was not at all the right play and never would be.

I wonder if that's the one where Santy used the fact he was being turned around in the tackle to handball the ball DIRECTLY to Murphy. On SEN, the commentators complimented Santy for showing good footy smarts. Strange how unbiased commentators see it differently than Santy's critics.*

If they're instructed to run on at all costs, that's what they should do. That's what Geelong do. And if you'd paid attention, you would have noticed that the Crows players would run at the tackler, draw the tackle while keeping the hands free, and then handball to a free player. By doing that, they forced our players to commit to the tackle and they were out of position to stop the overlap. Stupid and lacking vision, or part of a strategy that doesn't always pay off but pays dividends over the course of a game? You might remember the quote from Clarkson in the GF preparations: Geelong are like sharks - they're always trying to move forward. Stop them from doing so and they die. Stopping to avoid taking on the tacklers is also what Adelaide wants you to do.

* Oh, wait a minute, the poster said that he really wants to see Santy do well. That's a bit of an art-form in this thread, that, in the same way as the old line runs as follows, "Some of my best friends are black/Asian/gay etc, but (insert stereotypical insult)". Even SB claims to be disillusioned after his hopes were raised on angels' wings after Santy's "2 good games in his lifetime". But most of us think that SB just wants to see Santy fail.

well you see with Santy thats all you can do is pluck isolated examples as he gets to few disposals -when you get 8 incidents where santy touches the ball and 3 or4 of them are errors it very easy to plck isolated examples

and by the way Walks would struggle to be in our top ten

Lead up to the wing and do what??

he is 199cm dont know to many lead up to the wing players this size

Wigins is better at that role than him

His brother thought he could be a 200cm midfielder but no at that size you are needed else where

against Essendon* and Freo he played the role we all wanted him to play at acquitted himself ok
but that was against rubbish defenders since then he has struggled and finished every game in defence as he has been giving us nothing up forward

lead up to the wing and mark the ball.

lead up to the wing and drag a defender away - if defender doesn't go with him, use Santy - but that's what you never refer to is it - the fact is our blokes - especially some of our blokes - under pressure resort to ignoring certain players over others. As long as that remains we will not win a flag. It's Ratts biggest challenge.

Santy gets 8 kicks from about 10 attempts to use him but I saw him free a lot more than that - once the crows understood he was not on his own players' radar - well that flowers that forward line.

Bit like Yarran - if the kid is free @#$%&! use him.

We have got to use every free player - not certain players, free or not.

I hate Collingwood but watch 'em - they use all 22 players, always, even though not all 22 players are great players.
I hate Essendon* but watch 'em. As above.
I hate Richmond but watch 'em - they don't.

This is where you let yourself down. You're happy to jump onto a stat like a seagull onto a chip. But when the stats don't support you, you just make them up.

Of Santy's possessions, half were contested. And he had no clangers and his efficiency was 2nd highest for the team at 88%, only 1% below the top - meaning only 1 disposal was assessed as ineffective ( and not the 3 or 4 that you've asserted). He was also sent back into defence, limiting his ability to rack up possessions given that he hasn't been issued with his defender's union card meaning he doesn't qualify for cheap kicks in the back half. As it was, 75% of his possessions occurred in the first half before he went back.

I love the way you make up stats. Let's see if I can do as well as you. Hmmm ... Santy was great on the weekend, with 20 kicks and 30 handballs, as well as booting 20 goals straight. What a game!

I question two plays in one post (when all of my previous discussion on Setanta has been extremely positive) and all of a sudden I'm an O'hAilpin critic? He's one of my favorite players and someone that I can see becoming a near All-Australian as soon as next season.

I question his smarts at times. However, I will acknowledge that all players have 'duh' moments.

All-Australian next season is taking it a bit too far I think, as far as I can see he's just a good ordinary player....

Only one of Setanta or Cloke will survive beyond this year, and O'Hailpin will stay on.. I do think Setanta has some upside as a player and I really want him to succeed but I think with our developing list and with Waite to come back next season (who i'd play forward with Fevola and possibly Kruezer), Setanta may struggle to find a gig, except for insurance backup.

Don't get me wrong I think he's a good option but I feel by next year he may be more the 23-26th best bracket. Can't fault his improvement as a player this year though and best of luck to him.

May be met with cycnacism (??) but can't kick and will not be able to the rest of this season. Hopefully back again next year but has to play out this year.

the last three games he has ended up in defence because he has offered nothing up forward not because he is needed. you telling me they shifted thornton into attack on saturday because he wasnt doing well in defence he was swapped because we were getting nothing out of Santy

the only stats you need to look at from the weekend were 1 kick 1 mark 0 tackles

and talking of using stats to your advantage when you dont get many your efficiency is usually higher

Are you suggesting he's carrying a foot/groin injury that stops him from kicking, Beano? And why do you say "hopefully back again next year"?

So is Craig Bolton - what a wuss he was. In the old days, he would have played out the game, but instead he opts for the comfy ride to hospital and the attentions of the nurses, and he's spent the rest of the season with his feet up at home. Kids these days.

That's strange, SB. On the one hand you say that a smaller number of possessions is ordinarily accompanied by a higher efficiency rate, but on the other you claimed that he made 3 or 4 errors.

I think I'll take your post as a suitably craven apology for lying your posterior off over the number of errors.

Mav regardless of the stats his last three games have been utter crap

Is that good enough for you

As a Setanta fan, i tend to aggree with you somewhat............... however in his defence, he JUST got settled at CHF and was in good form, only to be taken out and thrown into the Ruck again in the melbourne game because cloke was shit, then thrown down back again in the crows game because we were lacking height!

Sadly, we need him this week to take on Brown.

Next year, play him at CHF and leave him there!

Ryan he was thrown in the ruck against melbourne because he was giving us nothing not because cloke was crap in the ruck .It didn't matter what was happening in the middle Ratts tried both Walker and Cloke at that CHF and if you heard Garlett after the game he said it was good having cloke up there to rove off (drinking buddies)

Last week when the game was lost they ripped him out of forward line and played thornton forward he was on the bench after 15 minutes of the first bcause his man was doubling back on Fev

Basically they are running out of places to try him it seems that every new position he has been tried in he equips himself well for a handful of games then falls away once the opposition pay attention to him . It is a clear sign that he is not up to it

Nah, cloke was crap in the ruck against melbourne, hence why he was dropped.

So many times i saw Setanta free and open against Adelaide, yet we didn't kick to him. We just went to Fevola. Far to Fev concious again.

Either way, i think its CHF or nothing for Setanta.
