Had enough of Russell. Always watch him closely, he has no idea. When he gets dropped, he won't be missed one bit.

Ratts is too focused on trading type for type with his selection, at least to a degree.

Could have been so much better than this. Setanta & Fisher is just killing the run again. If we roll back at all it will be too much.

It's great to speculate, ponder, predict, but let's face it....none of us have access to all the information/data that the MC does, none of us are 100% privy to the inner workings of the club, none of us have spent all week studying the opposition's structure/personnel/gameplan, and most (none?) of us have the football credentials to be on an AFL MC.

Houlihan and Garlett in, despite not being in the best for the Bullants on the weekend.
Anderson is named an emergency nearly every week. Has been dominating in the Bullants, and was named amongst the best on the weekend. What does this guy have to do to get a game for Carlton?????
Grigg was also amongst the Bullants best on the weekend. Surprised he was also not named.

Russel continues to get a game because he does what he is supposed to each week. He achieves the desired results that the match committee set for him... or so I am led to believe if interviews with the man are anything to go by.

Armfield should be persisted with in my opinion as he has a lot of upside to his game. He is very quick, quite tough for his size and is prepared to run and carry the ball. Sometimes he needs to steady more before disposing of the ball, but that is learnt in match situations not in the VFL. It is only by getting game time in to players like him that they get better. Also, having seen the replays of the last few games several times now, I do not think his disposal is that bad. Against the crows all he really lacked was support. I am pretty sure he will never be a champion of the AFL, but by golly he will make a very handy player for the Carlton footy club over the next few years.

When Russell is:
* falling over every week (Walls has also noticed this and commented on it. Not that I can't see it myself at the game)
* Only having 3 kicks, 5 handballs, 2 marks and 1 tackle and allowing his direct opponent Chris Knights to kick 5 goals in Adelaide
* turning over the ball
* not able to kick a goal when he has an opportunity
If this is doing what he is supposed to each week, and this is the standard that our team need to follow, then you don't care if Carlton lose. Go and follow Richmond, because they have plenty of players with Russell's ability.

As for Armfield, being tough, quick and being able to run, means nothing when you turn over the ball all the time. To win a Grand Final you need to be able to have good skills, not just toughness or run. Because at the end of the day, the winning team is the team who scores the highest score, not who is the toughest and quickest.
I have seen Armfield live at the footy every game this season, bar the Adelaide game on the weekend. But even what I saw against Adelaide on TV, he hasn't improved.

Until Carlton weed out the list cloggers who can't dispose of the footy (e.g Wiggins, Fisher, Setanta, Russell, Carrazzo etc), we will not win a premiership with these players in the side.
The way the POSSESSION style game is played today, skill level has to be at a high level, as turnovers are costly. Therefore skill level outweighs toughness and run as the most important aspect of the game today.

Well, I was hoping to see Banno back in this week, but hopefully he can put some pressure on in the twos.

As a few posters have mentioned, I hope theat Joseph gets a go in the middle, and on Kerr. Hopefully whoever plays on Kerr learns something about tackling as he could bring down a rhino. Also hope that JR gets to try create a bit more. He keeps getting a game and has improved, but shope he can start to work on becoming a more damaging player the other way.

All the best of luck to Garlett too. Surprised at that selection, but would love to see him with a few goals after his name in the match report.

Can't say I'm overly confident, last week has really dented my faith. However I'm hopeful we'll get the job done. Anything less than a win would be a disaster.

Still can't figure out why we are such hot favourites?? WCE weren't all that good last week I know but we've got a helluva lot to prove ourselves. I reckon they'll be fancing their chances. Here's hoping the boys are up to it and play like there's no tomorrow.

Have to say I agree. it's one thing to question a selection decision, but we have NFI about what's really happening. :smoking:

This article by Wallsy is pretty much on the money for mine.
Talks about various players and Ratt's coaching style.
Most interesting is the fact that Ratts has developed a handball-heavy style of plan which has lost 5 out of five when the handballs outnumber kicks.
I think there's something in that for all of us.
Even Ratts.

Very happy with the selections, although I would like Scotland back in. Also want a return to a more traditional set up but without the over emphasis on Fev.

P.S like Boynamesue's post, however this site would be boring without the ranting that goes on.

Too many changes.
The team is struggling for structure and continuity as it is and 4 changes wont help.

2 have been forced snickers, and after last week, 2 changes wouldn't be unreasonable.

Un-flower-believable.

This is truly an slur on the game today.

This would have to be the only game/club that would permit someone with nothing more than athletic attributes to compete at the highest level.

You wouldn't get a game in the EPL if you couldn't control the ball or pass with your left, yet this sh!t truck can play for my beloved Blues because he can record an above average stat in a beep test and does the "team thing", which means flower all if you can't kick, hit someone with a handball, kick a goal, shut down an opponent and last but not least demonstrate a basic understanding of the game, i.e. playing the whistle!!!

I wonder if he feels any embarrasment at all or if any of the other players snigger when the hear his name every Thursday.

I wonder how deflated the youngsters must feel after watching a game and knowing they certainly couln't do any worse than him.

And for all those that want to jump on me, I'll say it again, this is this reason why we had the misfortune to witness the worst Carlton side in over one hundred years.

Sir....I salute you.
It really hurts having a player in the side that you can/t stand.
I am not the type(usually)who disses their own.I have been told I'm uninformed and fat bottomed(lol)for my view on Russell.and I promised to watch his every move closely tonight,so ..I will.

Love the prophecy Psychic Sibella, but will move this to the pre game thread, which should possibly be the match day thread.

Atleast we'd know who Bannos direct opponent was.
