You can't teach that stuff. You can get fitter, learn a game plan, get stronger......but you can't teach instinct. Young SOS has the goods, you could see it right away. Whiley ain't got it and never will. It's starting to look like all the GWS discards are just that.....discards. And we've got plenty of them :-(

You can teach instinct and build confidence, that's what game sense drills are for.

Want to create time pressure? Give some blokes some pads and blow the whistle after a few seconds, then whack them if they haven't released the footy or made the play.

It's not the same, but it's some pressure, and it allows them to focus on the required tasks in a controlled environment. Port are trying to do the same thing with VR at the moment.

'Jet lagged', 'fatigued' & 'tired and emotional' are all polite euphemisms for your current condition.

As in -
"Ladies & gentlemen, Molly Meldrum had to go home early this evening due to being jet lagged as a newt".

You watch the TV movie or something? Pretty dated reference!

Whiley was good last week because he was behind Kerridge and Gibbs.. He's not good enough to be our number 1 or 2 midfielder which was what he was asked to do today.

Spot on

As others mentioned, add in Kerridge, Gibbs, Murphy, Cripps, Thomas and Kruze into the midfield mix and then the game changes.

We saw enough glimpses from the new kids to be enthused about what they can offer.

Weitering looked like a seasoned veteran, could teach a thing or two to our seasoned veterans!

Pretty awful display, I thought. If not for Essendon*'s ineptness, could have lost that game by 20 goals.

Pros:

Weitering. Brilliant 1st game.
Curnow, McKay and Silvagni all showed a bit. Really liked McKay's physicality.
Tuohy.
Graham and Phillips.
Byrne.
Tutt.
Tackling was pretty good.

Cons:

Jones looks less and less likely, every time he plays.
Rowe had an awful 1st half.
Whiley was disappointing.
Most of our runners were pretty awful. Although Boekhorst had a good last quarter.
Cuningham looked overwhelmed.
Managed only 4 goals again.
Disposal.
Umpiring.
Parko was right.

It sounds like we will field a more experienced side against the swans at ES. Even so I would like to see game time again for Byrne, Gallucci, McKay, Charlie Curnow and Silvagni. I'd like to see how they go when rotated among a more experienced (and hopefully more competitive) side.

Wikipaedia: An extract fom the definition of 'instinct' :
"Instincts are inborn complex patterns of behavior that exist in most members of the species, and should be distinguished from reflexes, which are simple responses of an organism to a specific stimulus, such as the contraction of the pupil in response to bright light or the spasmodic movement of the lower leg when the knee is tapped. The absence of volitional capacity must not be confused with an inability to modify fixed action patterns. For example, people may be able to modify a stimulated fixed action pattern by consciously recognizing the point of its activation and simply stop doing it, whereas animals without a sufficiently strong volitional capacity may not be able to disengage from their fixed action patterns, once activated.[1]"
I don't think you can teach instinct. The very definition of it precludes that. I think reflexes can be improved upon and learned but instinct is inherited, not learned.

Graham was good. When accompanied by the regular mids, I think he'll be very good.

Keogh, I've read a lot of your posts over the years, some of them pretty blunt, harsh and unforgiving.

The club performance over the last 15 years has been so bad on and more importantly off the field so in 90 % of cases the critisicm has been justified. Only Melbourne rivals us in this department and their still paying a coach a seven figure sum who is past it.
I haven't softened at all. I do believe the club is finally doing things right.

My most harsh , blunt and unforgiving posts were reserved for Nick Stevens.
Was on the money there

But this one.... I had to double take to see it really was you... am impressed

Parko was only right if he said Essendon* had a better list than us in 2016 if Gibbs Murphy Kreuz Cripps Walker and Kerridge never play and Doc Jamo and Simmo only play a half every game.

Think we're going to need Walker playing full forward all the time. We don't have many scoring options other than him.

McKay and SOSOS and Curnow have showed some nice leading patterns etc but they're still young and probably not ready for consistent senior footy.

Walker is probably our only senior forward who leads and capable of consistently having scoreboard impact.

Although Dre was good last year but he hasn't played forward much at all so far this year.

Very promising signs from the three draftees. The three of them may work out all be excellent choices in a couple of years time. Along with Weitering and Cripps and possibly this year's number 1 pick and maybe another top ten pick also, the foundation will be taking place nicely.
