It's said that Sos had it easy up at gws because of all their first Rd picks, but as it be pens increasingly clear how far gws are ahead of gc, I think it shows Sos's credentials.
Good point.
I think GWS also picked a good mix of coaches to help their players develop.
It's worth noting that on paper it looked like GWS went overboard on tall players and I believe that if Carlton were in GWS' shoes, they would have halted by the pick that snared them Cameron McCarthy. Before that they had Jeremy Cameron, Jonathon Patton, Adam Tomlinson and Kristian Jaksch already on their list and they had just drafted Tom Boyd. A few years later two of those players have gone, another is plagued by injury and Cameron McCarthy has a breakout game. It just goes to show that you really can't have too much of a good thing and an overly rationalist approach (one that I believe has plagued Carlton for too many years) seems to do more harm than good.
Before anyone says that GWS can afford to do things that way because of all the concessions, etc; I think the example still translates on a smaller scale.
