Waste of the money spent; write a cheque and give it to the club. What a bizarrely infantile PR stunt that would be.

fa·ce·tious   [fuh-see-shuhs]
adjective
1.
not meant to be taken seriously or literally: a facetious remark.
2.
lacking serious intent; concerned with something nonessential, amusing, or frivolous: a facetious person.

It'd been mentioned as a serious comment many times. Read it enough times and the amusement dies down. ;)

Still need more of a build up to hit 50k. I'm sure you'll all let me know when you think that occurs. :P

This weeks graph for your perusal. You will note that I made some additions so that we can compare our current tally to last years tally. You might also note that we are about 3K up on last year. We are also close to breaking our record and yet we have still 11 weeks to go. Interestingly we are still getting about a thousand new sign-ups a week.

Figures are finally starting to buck the trend, but they won't maintain that pace for long. For those cooing about teams like Essendon*, Richmond and Hawthorn, the official statistics (which are the ones we stick to), will look very different. For example, I don't think Essendon* or Richmond have cracked 40k officially.

Get to round 10 without a loss and we'll hit 48k.

50k is fantasyland.

Heard Swan on the radio the other day saying that we might be the first club to crack 1 million television viewers 3 games in a row.
We had million plus viewers watch us against Richmond, Brisbane and Collingwood. If 20% of those watching follow the Blues and are not members that is a huge potential market.

Working pro-rata and deducting their non-access numbers that have most likely have been again factored into the exposed numbers has:

Richmond: Just on 40,000
Essendon*: Just under 38,000
West Coast: 41,750

We'll finish third behind Collingwood and Hawthorn on the membership table, after the fluffy numbers have been stripped away from other teams.

Realistically we should attain 47K members which is about the right amount.
We were never going to lift by 15% in one year although you wouldn't know it looking at our website.
Maybe Jeanne will tip in and buy another 3,000 to get us to 50K. That will be the only possibility although we may push out some unusual type memberships come May/June.

They should probably mention priority access to GA Finals tickets as a plus, and people might get on board. I know that's a common fact for supporters of clubs, but how many people would know that if you did a quick voxpop on a busy street?

Might be worth a shout.

It's a great effort. The figure I'd love to see is how much coin the club makes from membership (it's the third largest revenue source behind TV rights $ and corporate sponsorship) - but MINUS the advertising expenditure from the final tally.

The club and supporters want 50,000. But it isn't so you can say 'Carlton has 50,000 members' 'Hooray!'

That doesn't mean much at the end of the day...It's to satisfy the corporate sponsor and to get more on board who will sit up and take notice and want to get on board of a growing entity. If Hershey's came in to Anthony Barham and Greg Swann and said 'If you guys can hit 50,000 members and show us that you're capable of raising that increment by $X every season - then we'll pay $250k per year more than what Mars are giving you now ($800k; expires in Dec 2012) - then unless Mars can equal that, they're out and Hershey's is in. It's that simple.

But part of the frustration is that the annual report doesn't break down the advertising spend. For all you know (the member...Or 'Investor'), the club is making $7million from memberships, but spending $3 million on advertising.

It (membership) will always be the third highest revenue stream - but the more you can tie it to other revenue streams - the better off you'll be. FWIW - Coca-Cola spend $14million on advertising in Australia. part of that ($250k goes in the clubs pocket)...and some goes in Juddy's pocket.

The embarassing loss to those turd burglers will help to put the brakes on any momentum we had towards signing 50k

Why does this concern you so much? C'mon guys - give me some answers! Why do you want Carlton to so desperately have 50,000 members?

I'm not entirely sure you're thinking this through.

personally, I think with such a large supporter base there is no reason why we shouldn't have 50K plus members

more options for people and families - it is a step closer to getting Blues supporters for life in some instances

I ripped into a few of my mates who are Blues supporters and aren't members - did the trick with two of them

Maybe I am a bit old school in that a Carlton membership has always been a part of me and my brothers and sister - bought my first one with money I earnt from selling the Herald after school around Carlton

Doc is right it needs to be more about what the value of our membership is worth not the number of members. As soon as we hit 50,000 someone will push for 60K etc.

More important what dollar value we have from the 43K we have right now.
