Phil Pinnell didn't play for us in 1968.....he played 1969-79.

It was the same Ross Warneke.

Here's another one I've found from that 1968 Flag Win.

I think.....from left is Bill Bennett-Nick-Robbo-Crosswell-Peter McLean-

Wallsy-Percy Jones-Barassi-Wes Lofts-Gags;

and Brian Kekovich....smoke and all!...(Have I got them right?)

I remember at training that Percy Jones.....Jezza.....Kekovich.....Wes

Lofts and a few others all smoked after training.....and indeed at 3/4 time!

This brings back memories for me Warbs( and i am probably showing my age ),I have photo's somewhere at home of me on the front page of the Sun in 1968 as Nick was lifting the Cup!

Also managed the lap of the ground, something that i was able to repeat in 1970.

My kids are constantly amazed at the tall, gangly long haired kid,who features quite prominently in the post Match Celebrations in those years!

Mark Maclure was a great player for us....especially in Finals.

1974-1986 from East Sydney....188cm and 82.5kg was big in those days; and he added lots of grunt to our forward line.

A great football brain saw him back at the Club in the 90's on the Match Committee.

Here we see him leading out our team on Grand Final Day 1979, with Fitzy-Johnno-Curly-Perce; and Jezza.....it was a great day.

This is a typical mark taken in that same game.

Mark Maclure was a key member of three Premiership Sides in 1979, 1981, and 1982.

He held down Centre Half Forward at Carlton till Stephen Kernahan came along in 1986.

Small in height for a CHF, he made up for it in his ability to bring the ball down constantly to the advantage of the Mosquito Fleet around his feet, and his ability to swing around on to his non-preferred left foot made him a difficult opponent to hold down.

And in case anyone was wondering it is spelled:

M - A - C - L - U - R - E

Not to mention that he was:

1) the most unselfish player to ever pull on a boot - a consummate team man;
2) a brilliant set shot for goal WHEN THE PRESSURE WAS ON (ie in GFs).

We recruited Brent Crosswell from Campbelltown; Tasmania in 1967 as a 17 year old.....Born: 08/08/1950; 185cms and 80.5kg.

98 games and 92 goals....1968-75.

His first season with us was 1968, when he won our Best New Player Award.

Brent was very quick, elusive, fiery and flamboyant; and immensely talented.

He had many disagreements with Coach Ron Barassi, which seemed to fire him up to play even better....it's been said that he didn't like small crowds and

unimportant matches.....he needed the challenge of a big game.

He played in the centre in our Premiership side of 1968....his first year; and IMO was Best on the Ground in our Flag winning 1970 side.

The restless Tiger followed Barass to North in 1975, and played in their Flag sides of 1975 and 1977.

He was the kind of player who brought people to the footy just to see him play.....as long as he was "switched on".....he was unbeatable.

He had the ability, like Ablett and Jesaulenko and Carey and Hird, of being able to just take over a game singlehandedly with sheer audacious ability.

Heres the front cover of "Football Life" April 1968, with Coach and Pupil.

Here's Tiger taking a screamer over Rex Hunt.

This is one of my favourite pics....of Tiger kicking the goal that put us in front of Collingwood for the first time in the 1970 Grand Final.

Minutes later....Jezza snapped a leftfooter over his left shoulder from CHF that eluded all packs and ran and ran and tumbled through for the sealer;

but Tiger's goal was under enormous pressure from 45 metres.

That's Barry Price and Ted Potter from C/wood and Neil Chandler watching.

Image

This last pic is of Tiger with his super proud Dad celebrating.

My favourite player of all-time. What a champ! I saw him kick 4 goals from a wing in ONE QUARTER (vs Hawthorn in 1969). And what about that first game back from almost a year out with that disease. Played at FF and kicked 8 goals.

Moshe,

Your memory is pretty good but not infallible. Brent did kick four goals from a wing in one quarter against Hawthorn in 1969, but his return game from a year out produced 4 goals (against Fitzroy in the fog match) - Round 20 1971.

Regards.

All time favourite player! Amazingly talented athlete. Went to Scotch College in Launceston where he was a god! Would run backwards in athletics races and still win, make 99 and then let himself be bowled. I once saw him jump over 6 feet in the high jump from 4 steps with the scissor jump! There were many other "less athletic" stories around as well.
The guy was a freak and the ultimate enigma!
By the way - check out Squatter's (Brent's father) suit and waistcoat, so lat 60's and early 70's!!

I might be confusing two games here - that Fitzroy return match and one game against Collingwood around the same time where I think he DID kick 8.

But anyway, I loved watching him.

I remember a game when he was already with North Melbourne. It was at PP and at one point he confronted the umpire and starting yelling at him gesticulating wildly. They (seemed to) argue back and forth and the whole crowd was yelling, booing, cheering.

I happened to work with that umpire and I asked him on Monday morning what it had all been about. He said that Tiger yelled out something like this: "Keep running backwards and yelling. I'll keep yelling at you. The crowd thinks we're arguing and it'll really get them going".

As it's topical....if it's alright; I'll repeat what I said in this thread last Thursday:

I've got vague memories as a kid of us playing South Melbourne at the Lakeside Oval.

In his early days; Tiger played in the centre....6'1", fast, and a great mark.

We were getting done; and Tiger told Barassi at 3/4 time that if he could play at Full Forward and they kicked the ball down there to him.....they could win the game.

Barassi loved Tigers confidence and did that.....it was unbelievable.....Tiger started taking screamers and kicking goals; and the game was all over...
..South were demoralised after leading all day.

Tiger was capable of anything once he turned his mind to it.

I remember too that he had a polio type condition at one stage..
..he used to come into training on crutches for quite a long time.

Of course, tragically, he now suffers from Menieres Disease,
and lives once again in Tasmania.....AFAIK; he still plays
internet chess with Ronald Dale Barassi.

I'm going to phase out this thread this week......strangely enough; I started it on October 22; and today's date is February 22.

But....I originally started it to fill in the hiatus between seasons; and the Footy starts again this weekend, so, all things being equal; I'll restart the thread at the end of this coming season.....October/November.

Thanks to all of the posters that joined in with their thoughts and opinions.....there's nothing worse than playing to an unappreciative audience; and it was your comments that encouraged me to keep the thread going.

Carn the Mighty Blues !

Now that the footy season is upon us Warby has asked me to put this thread into temporary retirement until post season 2007.

Thanks for all you contributions to this thread Warby, it's made for some great reading.

Cheers camel

Top effort Warbs, wouldn't have made it through this pre-season with my sanity intact without it. (some would argue I didn't)

GO BLUES.

I understand it's your thread and idea, Warbs, but I wouldn't mind chucking up a few articles from yesteryear every now and again.

Completely up to you though.
