There has to be a point, pretty much now IMO, where we say we’ve kicked the tyres enough on Clarkson, Lyon, Scott, Buckley etc and now we open it up for any other suitable candidates and let the process run.

I'd like to know how come they would feel like the back up to Clarkson?
Clarkson has said he isn't coaching next season, true or not that was HIS public statement.
So moving forward, the media produced Lyon as next best choice based on the fact he was the next most experienced and threw his own hat into the ring.
The club never said he was second option and the club made sure to clarify they are looking for not only an experienced coach, but also covering all bases with all coaches through a thorough process.
So as far as I can see it is exactly what they have told the media hounds and it's still not good enough, because they don't know what's going on and can't break a story.

It’s not about what Clarkson says, it’s about Sayers’ actions. If he continues to throw the kitchen sink at Clarkson whilst the selection process plays out, it sends the wrong message to those applying through that process.

Bad message this “experienced coach” label.

We want the best coach. If that person does not have a senior AFL club coaching position on their resume that should not rule them out.

There are experienced assistants out there like Kingsley, Cox etc who’ve got 10 years at successful clubs with good cultures, how are they not “experienced” just because they’ve not been a senior coach at AFL level?

Limits the pool of candidates too.

Remember what happened when we wanted an “experienced” coach...

So it sounds like Tim Lincoln's addiction to Wokeism is the reason why our problems have escalated and why Lyon has pulled out of the race. Lincoln has a beef with Lyon.

His desire is to show his moral fibre (and that always means belittling people (Lyon) who have made mistakes in their past).

Please hire an investigator - and look into every aspect of Tim Lincoln's life. Has he ever sworn at a woman, has he ever said something transphobic, phobaphobic, multi-phoba phobic...and can someone get a recording of it?

This is the calling of Wokeism. It is like a Salem Witch Hunt... "when we dunk you, if you weigh more than a duck...well that means you are a witch! burn him!" Everyone ends up being hunted down.

If Lincoln is addicted to wokeism- do it in your own time son. Pay for a huge billboard and outline all the things you do for whatever cause is important for you....and put it on a billboard, but don't involve my football club. I will never look to a football club for providing my moral guidance. Never.

Look at the way the NBA is imploding. Good luck.

I agree, but so far I can't say I've seen or heard Sayers do that.
I’ve only heard assumptions from the media.
Ross says no so they must still be talking to Clarkson.
One thing has been proven, it’s that Sayers and the board are keeping everything in house.
This is a huge plus for us and a welcoming change not being influenced by outside noise.

the only thing worse than “wokeism” is flogs who wave away anything they don’t understand because they lack empathy for people who don’t resemble their own appearance, values or clan.

what happened to Goodes in the AFL system was a national tragedy and too few understand that. and it’s not like what happened to goodes was an isolated experience, it was emblematic of what happens to all indiginous players in some form or other, just ramped up due to Goode’s fame.

how Wayne Carrey gets to be forgiven to the extent he has a highly honoured role in the AFL brand really disappoints me. he never made amends for his behaviour over decades and never, far as i’m aware at least, even denounced it.

the AFL is one of the last bastions of blokish dumbfuckery in public life and if Lincoln wants to challenge that as part of his self-identity and personal brand, i have no issue with that. i love thé way Patty Kinnersely goes about it and if anybody has a problem with her then it’s 100% likely they have some inner souls searching ans work to do on their own subconscious biases, prejudices, probably childhood traumas, and certainly their lifelong mental conditioning.

let’s not forget the same club Prez who cost us draft picks with his corruption thought it was totally cool to touch up woman on the arse at just about every club function he ever attended. never was cool, now more people are realising it’s demeaning of women and hurts their self-worth and confidence, just what cave men want as a side benefit of their inability to relate to women in more sophisticated ways.

Thats true, but goodes was and is a flog and had numerous incidents on pitch to make him a polarising figure without the political stance.

I do admire him for his political stance, it takes a lot of guts to deliver a message no one really wants to hear aside from those he represented.

Eddie betts is symbolic of what people really think of the indigenous footballers. Precocious talents, and universally loved and respected for how they play their footy with flair and excitement.

There are always going to be people who racially vilify. Its part of Aussie larrikinism. I felt lots of racial prejudice growing up that I accepted as normal when I shouldn't have had to, and yet this avenue of conversation isn't respected (its largely the reason I left the other Carlton forum. I opened up about it, told a story that stuck with me about an incident from a long time ago and one of these "woke" people then criticised me for it in another thread where we had a disagreement. Thing is, I was adding to the conversation of why we all need to rethink racism.

Its the action against any party that's a problem. The "wogs" put up with it growing up but its no longer acceptable and needs to be universally chucked out.

this.

Ross Lyon whores himself in the media to get the attention of a carlton FC board (like they didn’t know he ls an experience senior AFL coach without a contract and they were looking for an experienced AFL coach for “just add water” finals success in spite of 20 years of post success cultural toxicity, another symptom of bad thinking at the top).

then Ross Lyon issues some verbal diarrhoea to cover for the fact that a rigours selection committee process is not for him.

it’s fair enough that famous actors refuse to screen test for parts bc it requires a lot of work to get into a character and why should they for no pay, their body of work speaks to their strengths and weakness. but for a multimillion dollar a year corporate job in a stressful environment surrounded by sniping media and internal agitators it’s fair enough to ask questions and expect decent answers.

it’s not fair enough to ask for free pitching (when advertisers and designers are asked to present concept art for a campaign for free which can then be stolen and used by the person who gets the job). maybe the board wanted Lyon to reveal his coach bag of tricks too much, but doubt it, and heck, SoS and many others will have reported on what Lyons does that’s different to other coaches.

conclusion: Lyon just outed himself as unfit to coach in modern AFL where there’s 30 young women training and playing in the AFLW and another dozen or more working within the same facilities.

What did Ross do that proves he is a misogynistic bully? I’ve heard lots of speculation but nothing concrete, since you obviously have all the facts please share them.

If people seriously look to footballers to guide one through their lives then they have something wrong with them. I see them as footballers. I don't see them as philosophers on par with St Augustine, or moral lecturers on par with St Paul. They kick a ball. They mark and hopefully score goals. That's what I want.

Their role - Lincoln & the board - is to get the best man for the job. That's it. If the said person can coach better, but in the privacy of his own life he boils frogs and flies for dinner- then so be it. I don't care.

If that man happens to have made mistakes in his past life, so be it.

That is unless we want to hold Lincoln up to the same standards - he should fully disclose every single interaction with every single person in his life. Did he ever steal from a shop? Did he ever lie? Did he ever cheat in an exam? Did he ever cause pain to another human being? If so, then he should resign. I don't know what Lyon did in Fremantle- I presume he was disrespectful to someone when drunk. That is my assumption. I have no right to delve into his past life if it has been resolved to the satisfaction of both parties.

I want the best coach for the job. If a board member is preventing that then that board member should stand aside.

Any young coach worth his own salt wouldn't want to coach us - we will simply destroy his career and damage his brand within two years.

I think we have dodged a bullet with Lyon. While it seems he ticks the boxes of experienced tough coach. I think he would have made it about him ie Malthouse. You saw his cocky performances in the media over the last few weeks. He demonstrated this by not wanting to humbly go through a process. Of course we needed him to present as times have changed since he last coached and we need to hear his philosophies about our group.

The media love to hate him and you can imagine how prickly he would have gotten when we lose and the heat is on him.

I know it seems shit right now, but I really do think this is for the best.

I do however hope we dont stink and we do get genuine guys who would love to coach us and is up for the challenge, and not have to have their arms twisted by money only.

So you can name a coach out there who has

1- played a part in a premiership team as a coach (Swans 2005)
2- got numerous teams to grand finals and but for a fickle bounce would have won one of them?
3- had experience at numerous clubs and in all occasions getting them to the finals.

I like the way he talks - i like all those simple metaphors that get to a point quickly. eg "Toby Greene needs to take off his superman cape etc"...and you think yes that cuts straight to the bone that comment. I was listening to them all on that panel - McGuire, Wilson etc - waffle on on Footy Classified about Greene and the only bit I remember was when Lyon said "take off your superman cape."

So in my humble opinion I want a coach that has experience and drive & communication skills.
If you know one out there - please get him to apply and get past the woke police at the same time.

I can think of two names that will likely help our cause.

1. John Worsfold.

2. Paul Roos.

The rest have baggage. Clarkson is the most desirable because he has the best recent record, but I think these two other names are a bit old hat, and might be being disregarded.

Paul Roos was involved with melbournes turn around wasnt he?

Yeah, I read Paul Roos' autobiography and it was one of the most impressive football books I have read.

Extremely capable. However, I don't think he has the fire in the belly anymore. He has achieved all he can.

Worsfold...I don't know much about. I have heard from people in the know at Essendon* that he wasn't a great communicator with people on the fringes of the team, but that is just one report. I don't have enough information on Worsfold, but yeah sure throw them into the hat if they are motivated.

I doubt either one is though.

When it looked like we were about to appoint Teague full time a couple of years back, Roos via the media was putting his hand up for a mentoring type role.
Maybe we look at that again should we go down the path of an unproven senior coach?

I'm shocked to be reading this

https://www.sen.com.au/news/2021/09/03/ ... -for-this/

Quote:
But there are two things you can’t criticise Carlton for.

One is moving on from Teague, that was absolutely the right call.

And two, you cannot attack the club for running a proper process to find the next coach.

After eight coaches in 21 years, Alastair Clarkson aside, it would have been irresponsible to appoint a coach such as Ross Lyon without going through the correct procedures.

It was clear that the connection to the job stroked Lyon’s ego, but when the work needed to be done to convince the club why he was the man he wasn’t prepared to get down and do the dirty work.

That spells danger.
