The big Irishman did well last night.

I just wished he had kicked the goal when he intercepted the kick in.

Budzy i disagree. But i think he's found his position and that is as a tall lead up centre half forward type... Has a great pair of hands overhead and confidence is sky high atm. Think though he gets found out in the backline too much and lacks the nous to be a defender, but he has good attacking instincts, and has been a real presence up forward for much of this year, so I reckon he's found his spot in the side as a forward!

Ohailpin hasn't just "found a spot". He is a key part of our side....A genuine Center Half Forward. They don't grow on trees. O'hailpin & Hadley are key selections. We struggle to win without them.

Isn't that what I just said?? He's found his niche, and thanks to some faith from the coach is reaping the rewards and playing some very good footy at CHF.

I'm with you, I couldn't be happier with Big Setants form atm!

15 months ago a debate raged.

Was he a defender, or a forward?

Ratten was quite steadfast. He's a forward, he said... The masses were unhappy, as they remembered his work on Lloyd and couldn't understand why Ratten was so insistent. He's the fullback! Why can't you see? You foolish coach, you're killing him! We cannot develop players! We have no idea!

Turns out he's a forward.

Never have I lost faith this bloke who is so tall, athletic, aggressive and works hard at his game.

I'm so glad things are working out for him. The doubters had a strong point about his footy nous, but he just gets better and better, and proving himself worthy of a spot in the 22 in anyone's book.

IMO, he's a very good CHF, but the thing I really like about him in the 22 is, as I've said over and over again, he's our insurance policy.

Can go back to match up against a 200cm opposition forward and he can be a dangerous forward who will apply ample forward pressure for a 200cm player. Add Kreuzer and Hammer (also 200cm) and we have something special brewing with our talls; effectively they are like midfielders ala Cox.

Now add Warnock, who will be our No 1 ruckman, who also is quite athletic and plays on both sides of his body, and oh shit, there are headaches for the opposition moving forward.

I can't see why Kreuzer and Setanta rucking in the forwardline and Warnock and Hammer rucking around the middle and defense. This will ensure that our ruckmen save their energy and when its there turn to go, they will have ample energy to go 100%, 100% of the time. Intense pressure all over the ground will lwad us to our 17th Flag.

Another fantastic effort from the BIG Irishman. Well done.

I love the guy but could someone please teach him to duck back off the mark after he takes a mark. He continually gets called to "play on" because he goes off the line, is forced into lobbing the ball over the guy on the mark or handballing to out-of-position players.

The way his football knowledge and skills have improved in the last 18-24 months, I have no doubt he will grasp this shortly and become a huge asset.

Would be a good, and has done some fantastic jobs down there, backman also. Just had to stop being moved around adnauseum. There aren't many positions he hasn't played on the footy field, ridiculous development practices.

And don't for a second give more than a little credit to the coaches, he's done it mainly off his own back and fought bloody hard to get to where he is now.

His overhead marking has improved immensely which is making a huge difference to his value to the team.

I definitely had doubts about him esp as a defender but he has really filled a void. He is so far ahead of Cloke in structure and importance it isnt funny. his mobility and intensity coupled with his overhead ability make him a valuable commodity. He, Fev and Kreuzer/Waite will be an awesome combo in the next few years

The more he takes the baby steps the more the opposition have to take note of him. The more they take note, the more Fev gets a shot at 1 on 1's. Hammer and Big K are stretching the defenses and with Wiggo back as the lead up forward to create space behind, it's all good.

Setanta just has to do all the 1%ers when he isn't getting a kick. He's got to keep presenting, knocking them over and being a nuisance inside F50. He has to make his opponent accountable and drag him away from Fev. Like the shark, he has to keep moving and not allow the defense to get into any rhythm. The biggest impact he can have is to work effectively when we don't have the ball. No doubt he's getting there.

I keep seeing shades of Earl Spalding in the way he creates contests, marks the occasional contested ball and more importantly, creates spillage for the likes of Eddie and Yarran.

Just need the boys to start having faith and kicking it to him.

I agree. There are quite a few times Irish is in the clear, yet players will elect to kick to Fev with 3 defenders hanging off him.

Or kicking it to Eddie Betts but putting it over his head.

Interesting to see Garlett get one just the same in the VFL Saturday and he too was so surprised he couldn't get a shot away before being rushed down.

Isn't this thread title irrelevant now?
