Great. Go out, do what you need to do. That's his business. His personal life, he's entitled to it.
For him to agree to pose for a photo with his Mrs on the red carpet, however, and he does this far too often for it to be a lapse in judgment, is just stupid, and shows how little he "gets" how he portrays and conveys himself as a leader. Did a similar thing after the Melbourne game - posing for selfies with Dave Hughes at the Comedy Festival on Twitter.
Why are we supposed to care about the losses, or the club, when clearly Murph's over as soon as the final siren goes? Why should the rest of the team care when the skipper doesn't? Compare that to the Andrew Mackie/Tom Harley stories in recent years.
And before anyone asks - only other player from Carlton in attendance was Curnow (injured and essentially Buttifant's son in law), and rather than be photographed, Dane Swan received a footnote acknowledging his attendance, rather than posing for red carpet pics.
I dont get it Rhino
Are you saying that Murph's (or any other player's) behaviour in their private time should depend on whether the team played well or won on the weekend?
Say we knocked oevr the Pies by 2 points last Friday night, and Murphy did exactly the same thing. You would still object?
Interesting set of variable standards you have there Rhino.
The behavior is largely irrelevant. Publicizing it is.
My issue is that he constantly doesn't get how his actions will be construed, not just by the public and the media, but his teammates as well. If he goes out, he goes out. Why pose for a picture on the red carpet for the Herald Sun though? Dane Swan didn't. Or even why didn't the club request that the paper not publish it?
The leader of the team shouldn't be giving off the image that a heavy loss to the arch rivals doesn't mean anything. It only enhances the perceptions that we're a pack of pretenders/individuals/not interested in team success, and gives further reason to potential/disenchanted members not to sign up, because really, why give a shit about losing to Melbourne, if the skipper doesn't?
There's a bit of theatre to it admittedly, that they should be "selling" the loss and how much it's hurt them to some degree. Doubt you'd ever see the Geelong or the Hawthorn boys all over the social pages the night after getting smashed by either side. Sure they probably go out, but I doubt they publicize it.
