Cotchin quoted in The Age today talking about his players and what they did wrong and where they fell down against Collingwood.

Murphy tells the interviewer he spoke to the players after the siren and told them people would say nasty things about them this week and that they should stick together.

Leadership!

Some of us saw it coming after PA.

But as usual, there were too many doubting Thomas' on this site (and not of the Dale type)

The usual club apologists on this site came out swinging, smashing me around with a wet lettuce, telling me I was over reacting etc.

"Season is shot" after round 1....Cazz was the only person on this site who believed me. He sent me a link to some movie I could watch to pass the hours instead of watching Carlton play this year. I assumed you were trying to help me out Cazz as you also felt the season was shot....Gee Cazz, I hope you weren't taking the mickey out of me with that...Surely not, it's just not your style

"Essendon*'s list shits all over ours" after round 1....Apparently, some clown on this site said I was delusional

"Warnock is shit...completely and utterly shit"...Clayman, tell me when you need more evidence of that? The bus is waiting for you. It's chocker block full

Get wth the program Blues hierarchy...Its 2014, not 1986....you flowering incompetent saboteurs of this once great football club...And POQ!!!!!!

Pros:

Walker, Yarran, Simmo and Curnow.
Ellard kicked another couple of good goals as our midget key forward replacement for Betts. Still not convinced we can afford to play him forward give our lack of pace and ball control at the moment. Almost no pressure being applied to rebounding defenders at the moment.
More games into young players. Although, other than Buckley and Casboult, not a lot to really catch the eye at the moment.
Malthouse did a decent job at defusing things post-match.

Cons:

We’re so inept we make Melbourne look good. We look smaller, slower and less skilled than every opposition we play. And we don’t try as hard. I think we’ve been out-tackled every week this year.
We played a more possession style of game today. And that didn’t work either.
Goalkicking. Again. Looks like Gibbs may have joined a long list of our players with the yips.
Early injuries in a game. Again. Smaller bodies and more timid players being crunched by the opposition.
While I support the MC making hard (and hopefully long-term) decisions. However our 3 most dangerous forwards missing after quarter time (Waite, Garlett and Menzel).
Curnow’s the only one who works hard enough to receive handballs at the moment. And we don’t want Curnow as our distributor.
I know he’s not particularly fit, but Thomas looks slow at the moment. Be nice to see some big money-performances from our big money-men.
The umpiring. I guess it’s the underdog syndrome, but after the 30 seconds, they didn’t want to pay us any frees forward of centre.

Walkers ball use was woeful yesterday

The problem with our leaders is we don't have any. Murph doesn't seem a good captain, but who else is there? If only we had a time machine and cd draft Selwood instead of Gibbs. Whatever the holes in our list, it is way better than Melbournes and not 80 pts worse than the Dons. The team and coach are not in the same library, let alone on the same page. We are currently the worst side in the AFL, yet our list is somewhere around 8 to 12, depending on injury and form. And you don't get Thomas on $700 k if you reckon you have a bottom 4 list.

I'm disappointed with Murphs after match talk on the ground. Instead of giving the team a good kick in the a$s he talked about how the media, supporters, etc would come after them and to stand firm and stay strong!!!!! Show some damn heart murph, don't nurse the guys, give them a serve. He's basically accepted the way we played. Well it's not acceptable Murph and you's as the captain need to 1. Show more yourself & 2. Demand more of your team mates

How the heck can people think players like Gibbs, Yarran, Walker were positives yesterday???

Do they understand the game or were actually watching??

They were pathetic. People get excited by a highlight or a couple of things that "Look Good". Gibbs and Yarran are a classic example of why we are crap.

They pick and choose their moments and only work one way. Numerous times both had the opportunity to tackle, man up, help a teammate and stood back.

Every time Yarran went for a run he would NOT work back to his opponent and walked to recover. How is that a positive?

According to 3AW he had 17 disposals for 11 ineffective possessions. That is shocking by any standard especially since it was a very soft game pressure wise.

Personally I would choose a Curnow or an Ellard any day of the week. May not be anywhere as talented (or AFL standard) but at least they have crack.

A few people here have stated how the players don't seem to play for each other and others used the term "introverts".

Check out the below.

I was at the YCP (Young Carlton Professionals) function during the week where Andy Maher (as MC) did a Q&A with Dale Thomas. A part of it went something like this:

AM: so you were a member of the rat pack at the Pies - if there was a rat pack at Carlton who would be in it?

DT: hmmm let me think about that.........a bit hard to say to be honest.........we haven't really gone out for beers with the guys????

WTF!!!!!!!

How do they expect to metaphorically die for each other if they can't act like a freaking tight bunch. Clearly they are not but surely someone in there has to manufacture some kind of comeraderie (sp?).

Seriously how hard is it?

As office workers the way we built relationships at work was Friday night drinks. I'm not asking them to go out and get pissed like the days of Fev but c'mon DO something that might instill teamwork and passion.

No pride by the bunch of @rseh0les. They make me sick.

Someone posted on here last year the Jordan Russell would often organise get togethers. Card nights etc. Looks like since he left, the place has fallen apart.

Hope they ask him about the 'game plan' meeting he said MM made the players have that MM said never happened.

If you look at the statements of McKay and Malthouse they are not contradictory, but that's not a headline.

Just listening now. An absolute farce. Business as usual at Carlton. Not panicking. These guys are in complete denial. They just don't get the frustration with Sticks and the influence being put to bear on the club by Pratt & Mathison.

McKay: 'We are a strong football club and we'll be back where we belong.' #AFL

Such a sense of entitlement

Other clubs piss themselves and think what arrogant @#$%&! when they hear that sort of shit.

That the most diabolical and embarrassing interview.

He & therefore by association the club, are still in complete & utter denial.

They think this is a little glitch.

It's not. We are in a whole & will be for a long time. But our recovery won't start until the club wakes up and faces reality.

Gut the whole place & start again. Top to bottom. Every single personal connected to the club is in denial. It's soooo frustrating.

I want change & I want it now.

In a dream world a group of outsiders will challenge the board and overthrow it. I'm sick of this mess.

I decided to watch Murph's post-match interview this morning. Typically underwhelming, as was entirely expected.

He's not necessarily to blame for that, however. There's an expectation when anyone faces the press that they say all the right things, respect the opposition, lay down a bunch of cliches and say everything in a well rehearsed, PC and less than controversial manner.

You know what I'd have loved to see? Some raw honesty.

In professional wrestling its called a worked shoot. Essentially a performer comes out or fronts up to the camera, takes the mic and begins to break the fourth wall. They allude to the ills of the industry from inside the business itself, calling fellow wrestlers by their real names and speaking as if they don't have permission of their boss. It's candid and controversial. It feels as though it's not right, that something is off - but it is utterly compelling.

In actual fact everything they say is both real and signed off on by those in charge. They're leveraging the sense of reality the performer is talking against the obviously fabricated world. It's brilliant when it works because it pulls back the veil and reveals truth and tension.

Murph would have been better off to front the camera - Carlton's camera, mind you - and in a similar vein to a wrestler performing a worked shoot go off a bit. Not go all Macho Man "Ohhhhh, yeaaaaaaaaah" and challenge Nathan Jones to a rematch at Wrestlemania in a steel cage, but speak brutally, pointedly and honestly.

Don't sell the same old disappointment and embarrassment. Sell anger.

Say we're not good enough. Say losing to the Demons is unacceptable. Say we absolutely should have won given the talent we have. Say at the moment we're utterly pathetic. Say we don't work hard enough. Don't talk loud enough. Take the blame if he has to for all that. Say too many are disgracing the jumper and taking playing AFL footy for granted. Be angry.

Wouldn't happen though. That would require a very different, very innovative approach. There's no bravery on the field, so why would there be any off it?
