1%ers
Carlton had 47 1%'ers to Essendon****'s 35.
tackles were about even at 57 to 51 in our favour and the contested ball was about even at 123 to 125.
Inside 50 was 55 to 29 in essendons favour
And marks inside 50 were 21 to 7 in their favour
They had more of the ball with about 450 possessions to our 317.
What does that tell you???
(1%ers are measured differently by every club, some include pressure acts some don't - what did you think of our harassing and pressure acts last night? Very impressive intensity and team related acts by the boys wasn't it Effes??? I know I was impressed - I have never seen anything like it in my life)
That's what the statisticians recorded.
I would have thoughts it's pretty simple. Its no different to most other games.
Our contested footy is fine, it's what we do with the ball when we win it. The contemporary methodology is to retain possessions at all costs. Ours is to put it back into a 50/50 situation again.
Hence why our marks inside 50 and our inside 50 total is deficient. We gain possession, kick to a 50/50 contest, if we're lucky enough to win that, we kick to a 50/50 contest and so on. The successful teams win the ball and control it with uncontested possession. They run, carry, handball to players in space and deliver with time and space.
They also put the ball into the hands of their quality users where our contested ball winners are usually the ones blasting it forward.
Its been obvious since the start of last year. we don't have any uncontested footy because our methodology doesn't cater to it. Bringing in 30 outside receivers won't remedy the problem. The way to fix it is to let the players play the game instead of telling them where and when to kick the ball. Especially when the opposition are often better suited to receiving it.
As for stats. Most clubs use the same provider so if our 1%ers, contested footy, tackles etc are up, its an accurate reflection. Unfortunately we look slow and insipid because the players are knackered from winning the ball and then watching it sail back over their heads.
