I found this stat bizarre. A team obviously running out of legs that was unwilling to use the bench

Perhaps we conceded that we would not be able to run out the game and began putting miles in the legs of those who have missed parts of the pre season in an attempt to harden them up for the weeks to come.

You'd hope so, because as a tactic to win games of footy it's sorely lacking.

perhaps the players can get the basics right....the 1%ers, the tackles, blocks, sacrificial acts etc

then they worry themselves about game plan and tactics

Less runners on the ground telling them to go to bench maybe
Players to dumb to take them selves off
Who knows

Chicken and egg.
Hard to block, tackle etc etc if you've slowed to a walk because you're knackered.

...our 1%ers were fairly consistent across the 4 quarters

(consistently poor - don't think fitness is an issue. We did the same thing in our last game against the Swans - 39 team tackles in a final in todays game is an embarrassment, unheard of low tackle stat. We pretty much took that mentality into this game, and allowed the power to get back into the game, when we were clearly on top. Story of our team for some time)

Tom Bell subbed. Is that because he was cooked?

No, it was probably because he had zero effect on the game.

There were 91 changes in total out of a possible 120. Me thinks the plan was to get more mileage into the players legs regardless of the end result.

At some point you have to call a spade a spade.

Players slowing to a walk against a team full of run. We didn't stand a chance after the 10 minute of the final quarter. Why not take a bit of a hit for the sake of better fitness across the team !

Hopefullly it pays off and we get the next 8 points up for grabs.

Pros:

I thought Waite was excellent.
Jamo pretty good too.
Curnow continues to improve.
Ellard.
Gibbs.
Great to see Yarran impacting a game again. Like him in defence.
Another game into Watson and Bell.

Cons:

How many of our kicks were smothered?
Goalkicking. Again. We're not really good enough to control play and scoring without actually kicking clear through goals. Murph's had the set shot goalkicking yips for a while. I hope Daisy doesn't have it too. Would've been a great start to his career at Carlton otherwise.
Didn't get the advantage out of our 2 rucks that we needed to.
Were scored against too easily. It's going to be a real temptation to swing Hendo back again, which just shows how diabolical our key position stocks are.
Lost a pretty winnable game.
Compared with most other clubs, not a lot of exciting young talent coming through. Could be a difficult couple of years.

The players that didn't go to Arizona or were only there for a short time really shouldn't have been picked.
