Pratt is a price fixer - but no more than the oil companies, the grocery companies or companies in the building industry - who have all done worse things than RP but never get investigated at all.

The whole event is rooted in vindictiveness..

AFL compromised in case of Cousins v Pratt

Quote:
Now that Pratt has stood himself down as president, Carlton and its wealthy backers should do some serious soul-searching. This is a club that, based on its past 30 years of history, seems unable to survive without molly coddling itself in the bosom of a wealthy and autocratic president. It has won premierships in the process but ultimately lost respect. It is time the Carlton Football Club grew up.

I could only read a third of that article before I thought - this is the most ridiculous comparison. Pratt and Cousins. Drawing a very long bow there.
Their situations are so far removed from each other it just wasn't worthy of comparison.

One is a player one is a businessman, why not compare the president of the united states with a soccer star in england. it is just a bizarre comparison.

One is a player who had been caught running from booze buses, been associating with criminals, gone on rehabilition, went on drug binges etc... and yet Lane wanted to start his comparison of Cousins with Pratt at the point that the AFL deregistered him (without any grounds according to Lane).

Apparently all the other stuff, the councilling, the agreement with the afl not to take drugs etc, not to bring the game into disrepute etc... none of that happened. we start the cousins story when he was deregistered according to Lane.

silly, silly man.

I can just see parents worried their football kicking kids are going to grow up and be like Pratt...

I think Tim Lane has passed his use by date.

I reckon his ABC pension should be swung into action

Why is it that other high profile media people support their clubs with complete biased and our ones feel the need to stick their feet in. I dont get it.

Carro will never bag richmond
Eddie never bags collingwood.

Pull your heads in Carlton media people we need to stick together, we have enough people trying to bring us down.

The man is 73 years old is an inspiration to many, contributes more than any other individual in this country alone. I think it is a personal vendetta against Richard and i would hate to sim him go down this way.

At the end of the day Richard Pratts company VISY was punished and pleaded guilty to price fixing. If they have substantial evidence that he knew or approved of the prix fixing agreement then he has to be punished for it as well.

Lets hope it all works at well for Richard Pratt

Just to clarify what im saying...

2 companies making boxes.
both come to an agreement and they both have it all to themselves and profits
1 company breaks the agreement and dobs the other in to the ACCC
That company gets imunity.. (even though it has been part of the collusion)
The other company cops a whack and the owner is smacked around the head mercilessly..
The company that dobs him in not only has imunity from punishment but its corporate reputation isnt even spoken about by the media...

Now the only way to bring a company like Visy down for collusion is for a heap of evidence...

The whole thing is weird...

Considering price fixing goes on daily all over this country...

To me it reeks of a personal assault on Pratt by some pretty big powers.. and probably not from within this country..

smelling like roses...

Yeah, Amcor have come out of this scott-free which is a bit bloody rude. Can't defend Visy's actions, but Amcor should be copping a bit in the media at the very least.

If someone from Amcor were involved with Carlton (not the other 15 clubs), rest assured they would.

According to the Herald Sun's Micheal Warner, Fahour may be keen to take the reins.

http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/ ... 61,00.html

The endorsements came as National Australia Bank boss Ahmed Fahour emerged as a strong contender to replace Mr Pratt.

It is believed the Carlton-barracking Mr Fahour is interested in taking on a board role and, if drafted, would be willing to serve as president.

"I love the club and want it to be successful," was all Mr Fahour would say yesterday.

Tim Lane has a warped sense of morality if he sees Ben Cousins as a victim. He wasn't sacked for criminal behaviour. It was for anti-social behaviour that was bringing his club into disrepute. He is drawing a long bow trying to link the two.
Why doesn't he compare him to Angwin who was sacked for turning up stoned to training. He wasn't convicted of anything.

It must be fantastic to be the moral voice of the world.

I have a dream,

one day sports commentators will be judged not by the volume of their political or business commentary but by the quality of their sporting journalism.

I know it's been brought up before - but Qantas (major AFL sponsor) has three major price fixing cartel cases running against it here, in Europe and in the US. Whilst VISY managed only to offend little ol' Australia, the Qantas team has managed to bring down the wrath of the international heavyweights.

It's my understanding that the AFL have QANTAS for another 3 years as one of its 'Premier Partner' sponsors. So...when Qantas is found guilty of price fixing here in our own backyard (and it is when - not if)...who's going to jump up and down about it?

The answer is no one...because put simply - price fixing on its own doesn't sell newspapers (proof again that this is all tall poppy hunting). It's done everywhere - the government doesn't give the agencies who monitor it any real powers - and Australians couldn't give a rats arse about whether or not they're being ripped off - they shrug and say "Bastards", and the argument ends there.

I have a question to ask, Mr. Samuel.....how come Mr. Geoff Dixon (CEO of QANTAS)is not charged with lying over its price-fixing crimes (in three continents, I might add)? You think, isn't it time to let bygones be bygones and let Mr. Pratt go?

(Well, one can dream..... )

There is also an intersting piece in todays AFR, headed " ACCC's impartiality questioned"

The Director of Competion Law studies at the University of Melbourne, Caron Beaton Wells suggests.....

"But if Mr Pratt can show that he acted in good faith and would not have settled the matter last year had he thought there was a prospect of further charges , he may be able to strike out the charges for being frivolous, vexatious or an abuse of power"

Note that again.... FRIVOLOUS,VEXATIOUS OR AN ABUSE OF POWER!

What she doesn't say is VINDICTIVE!
