Our four highest possession getters last game were HBkers Walker, Scotland, Simspon, Gibbs

So while it's important to have a dominant midfield right now much of our drive is coming from defense

We do need to add to the midfield though, no doubt, and they need to be big bodied

how so? all the highlighted below will get plenty of games in 2014

2007 - Kreuzer, Browne, Armfield
2008 - Yarran, Robinson, O'Keeffe, Tiller
2009 - Lucas, Davies, Kerr
2010 - Watson, McCarthy, Mitchell, McInnes, Duigan
2011 - Bootsma, Rowe, Buckley
2012 - Menzel, Temay, Graham

Half a side.

Admittedly we could have done better in 2009 and 2010 in the later rounds but some important cogs in the wheel were filled. *waits for Watson haters*

well currently we have Walker and Simpson there so don't be surprised if we look to get more...we just need to be very wise in our selections and IMO not reach too early.

it's a strong midfield draft and i'd hate for us to miss out.

Agree. I hope we do some smart trading and can get 3-4 picks inside the top 30. Then use them on players who can consistently get 25 possessions a week, work both ways and can use the ball. PLEASE

Question without notice: is there still a list around detailing players contracts, eg. date signed up until? Cheers.

Ok the Dogs mids beat the more fancied WC tall forwards.

If you dont have ball finding mids that can spread both ways and run hard and execute.. forget it!!!
WC horrible midfield.
Dogs hrrible tall forwards

I like the Dogs, they have a nice mix of good senior leaders and a great young crop coming up but they have a long way to go still.

Wallis, Liberatore, Macrae, Smith, Hrovat, Hunter and Dalhaus sets their midfield up for a long time. Looks like Roughead and Talia will be solid for them down back but they're probably a KPD and KPF away from being comfortable. Their tall forward stocks make our's look like GWS'

So did the Bulldogs have a full side in???
Nic Nat missing...

Kerr is finished.... Shuey is mid and Masten is mid..

the rest are ust flankers and periphery players.
Glass isnt needed against the Dogs.
They dont have a midfield...

The West Coast versus Western Bulldogs example is a simplistic argument, it was one game and there are a lot variables involved. Some sides have quality in both areas and we still have to beat them, too.

That's why I said it would be preferential.

People have been screaming mid mid mid mid mid but once again we saw the deficiencies we have up forward.

..Boyd is talked up as a big number 1 fav. cos he's good, but also cos he sounds like the only good tall [by a fair margin].. ..after boyd it's a good range of mids and mid/flanker types, but little top end talent in regards to kpps this draft..

..dee's looking extra smart cos hogan is smashing it, and is looking by far the 'real number one' of this draft..

That's what I was saying last year but Melbourne had a high pick to trade, I guess. Critics were suggesting trading their early pick was short-sighted. Did they even know who Melbourne were getting?

I wonder whether we even looked in to the idea?

..from memory dee's used a compo pick to get boyd didn't they..?.... ..down the track it will seem the dee's robbed the giants blind.. ..they're also in full rebuild mode, and can perhaps 'afford' to make the call.. ..i think being a 'middle team' is dangerous, cos a 'bold move' can take you fwd, or lose you years..

I disagree. We've gone after kids in the past like Yarran who are never going to be midfielders. Since Chris Judd arrived at the club - how many genuine midfielders have we recruited through the National Draft?

2007 - Kreuzer, Browne, Armfield
2008 - Yarran, Robinson, O'Keeffe, Tiller
2009 - Lucas, Davies, Kerr
2010 - Watson, McCarthy, Mitchell, McInnes, Duigan
2011 - Bootsma, Rowe, Buckley
2012 - Menzel, Temay, Graham

I count three. Only one chosen in the first round. And as much as I like kids like Jack Billings and Ben Lennon in this years' draft - when it comes to midfielders - it's time to get a genuine midfielder.

..sorry should have clarified, if said player is much better than whats after, you dont wanna 'reach' purely for need..

You mean, Hogan? I'm not sure of the details but I thought they gave up their first round pick. Anyway, GWS could never select Hogan themselves, they could only trade the rights to select him as a 17Y/A.

The danger with us is that we are a side that needs to rebuild but we have a small group of players that help keep us in certain games. We are a unique case, if we choose to keep having a crack at finals and recruit accordingly, I can see us dropping down to the bottom four if it doesn't work out. The point is, Hogan would have just about gone number one or two last year if he had have been available anyway. What price was he worth to GWS that year? Were Melbourne clever or was it inevitable given their drafting position?

I think most people on this forum are experiencing cognitive dissonance and seem confused in regards to whether we are rebuilding or trying to milk our finals chances. In my opinion, it's not what we lack right now that's the issue, what it takes to be a premiership side is. That last point is always what bugs us.
