club will always have players leaving
players underperforming
and overexpensive players coming in to underperform

why?
because thats what we are

hard to argue with that given the last few years. Hence my comment that i don't mind Gibbs leaving if we hold on to the compensation and set a direction. The last five years we've used close to the minimum allowable number of draft picks while treading water in the lower half of the eight. never mind all the mind-boggling contract shenanigans [insert Bootsma multi year comment here].

The question is (ignoring money) does Gibbs want to stay @ Carlton?

If no, I don't want him staying because we can pacify him with dollars.

If yes, he should take a leaf out of Murph's & Walker's book & sign for less to stay.

..who says they did..?..

Obviously he could be just making it up, but Swann said it on 3AW a month or so back.

..not sure about Tex, I figure he isn't on big big dollars so more suitable he gets what he is worth, but wasn't it reported that murphos signed at around 700..?.. ..not long after talking up the idea of taking less to build together..

I dont remember ever reading about how much Murphy's new contract was worth.

I just watched the replay of MM on Talking Footy, when asked about Gibbs he replied he was optimistic but also a realist about him staying. He also said that Gibbs didnt ask for our drafting strategies but rather his manager did.

I just think he is way overpaid. He is not worth 500k let alone 700k per year.

I have to ask the question ...

Who stands to benefit the most if Gibbs leaves or stays? What I mean by that is does Gibbs management stand to gain more if he leaves ,ie some club pays more money, or he stays, and Carlton pay more money. Because if that is the case, then the root of this issue is Gibbs management trying to line their own pockets on "behalf" of their client. Which to me stinks as they are trying to milk this free agency for all its worth.

Gibbs should sack his management, sign up with Carlton for life at a fair but decent salary and put the whole thing behind him.

Is the managers request for a blueprint more about Bryce or more about other (potential) clients ?

i dunno why more players dont do the same thing... they should care about the direction of the footy club

I wont loose sleep over him... provided we've learned from our mistakes, use the pick for a tall and have the appropriate development in place to allow that player to be as good as they can be.

Wrong, AFL has maintained the compensation pick(s)

..i'm not sure another club will turn Gibbs into a premier mid, I'm not sure he has the required hustle for it.. ..he could be turned into a 50+ goal kicker if he spent most of his time at hf in a proper fwd structure, with small time thru the middle..

Gibbs was 99% staying from last i heard about a month ago.
The longer this goes, and the more sh*t the media spins... the more chance this will change.
"our mates" in the media will do eveything they can to cause disharmony at Carlton.
They're already trying to make this a "supporters against Gibbs" thing to try help drive him out.

We have to as a club realise that the rules have changed (again) Move with the times.

The problems arise when the players contract finishes in the same year that he becomes eligible for Free agency. Therefore the club should avoid this situation

For Marquee players (or any player with tradeable value)
I would be starting talks the year before their contract runs out. Be honest with them. Say we are looking for another commitment by the years end, either a contract extension or tear up the old and create a new contract. If they are not willing to sign by the years end ( remember they will still have a year on their contract) then we will be seeing your inaction on the contract negotiations as a sign that you will be entering free agency negotiations at another club next year. Accordingly we will be offering to trade you at the end of this year. Be tough wear the flak from the supporters , show leadership. More importantly take the control away from the player.
This way the player has a choice, but equally the club has the opportunity to receive something in exchange for his services by trading him for another player.

I think that Free Agency is overall a good thing, but it has been poorly handled by some clubs. The AFL have imposed a fixed salary cap on the clubs and then introduced FA which makes the job of staying within the cap and maintaining your list, that much harder.

ive been saying that about how u treat guys going into free agency since last year.

u sign them a year before or they get traded.
simple as that
