Wonder if Henderson is really going to play

Everitt will float around the ground - probably lining up on Westhoff at times. McInnes will help out in defence, Butcher might be too athletic for Watson. Jamo on Schulz.

Lachie will play forward with Waite & Kreuzer.

Yep good point. Looks awfully tall to me. Port are a pretty powerful running team. Not sure we want to go that tall with a few runners underdone.

I think we're just trying to stretch an undermanned & inexperienced Port defence.
- Trengove hasn't played at all this year & is going to be their number 1 defender
- Jonas is 189cm tall so he will be undersized for any of Waite, Hendo & Kreuz
- Clurey is a first gamer

Mick used to play Cloke, Dawes & Brown up forward. Waite, Hendo & Kreuz could be his Carlton version.

Watson, Jamo & McInnes to take Schulz, Butcher & Westhoff (when he is forward).

Everitt might be tall - but he doesn't play like a tall.

We'll never lock the ball in our forward 50 if it hits the deck with those three up front and no Eddie. Not that Eddie could even do that job just himself.

Our delivery better be spectacular if that's the plan. I'm not sure if we're capable of spectacular.

Speaking of our front 50 ... Is it just me, or on preseason form, was Buckley a little stiff to miss out on a forward pocket?

Yep Buckley very stiff mate..
Team looks too big and far too slow.
McLean, Bell, Ellard, Robinson and Curnow, all
slow players.
McInnes lucky IMO, not strong one on one, disposal ordinary..
Would have preferred Cripps, Armfield, Scotland, Graham and Buckley..
Judd, Carrazzo and Docherty will be missed, lacking depth
is so obvious looking at our squad....
Then again what do I know, FA!!!!

As I predicted. Although there's a good chance we'll see at least one late change.

If everyone named is right to play, it's not a bad side on paper (really only Judd & Carrazzo missing from our "best 22")-

Simmo Jamo Everitt
Tuohy Watson Walker
Murphy Gibbs Thomas
Robinson Hendo Yarran
Garlett Waite Kreuzer

Warnock Brock Curnow

Bell, Ellard, McInnes
Menzel (sub)

I'm not worried about that side being too tall. I don't consider Everitt & McInnes talls. I accept Watson, Kreuzer & Warnock in the same side raises the question about mobility, but I think we're OK (Levi would have been one too many).

The key questions for me - are we taking too many blokes in who are short of a gallop? do we have enough gut runners? is our midfield too one paced? do we have the game style drilled into our players? is the game style the right one? does our collective playing group have the appetite to work hard enough for long enough (Freo showing the way at the moment)? will we take our chances when they come? has Watson improved as much as his preseason form suggests?

If the tackles stick, we kick straight and Waite stands up - we're a chance.

Port being forced to activate their sub in the first quarter would help too....

We're also picking for midfield endurance ...McLean, Bell, Curnow ...add Walker. Less rotations more contests = more big bodied, high endurance players

There is two key types of speed in football.

Leg speed and speed of ball use. Hawthorn aren't blessed with leg speed but their ball use and penetration is as good as there is.

I think we are improving.

Leg speed we have Yarran, Walker, Garlett & Tuohy who can run and break lines. Maybe even Thomas, Bell & Simpson who will take on defensive structures. Ball use we have Tuohy, Watson, Gibbs & Menzel who can make the ball travel quicker than the average.

The key will be defensive pressure and structures all around the ground for 4 quarters. Freo (Ross Lyon) are the masters of this and showed it last night.

I believe we have some way to go but we are getting there. I hope by mid year Docherty, Cripps, Holman, Graham, Buckley & Lucas are in our best 22 based on "performance".

If they are what they can bring to the table will make us better.

Personally I believe we are "specials" tomorrow night!

I think your about right abns.

for mine I would look at:

B: Yarran Jamison McInnes
HB: Tuohy Watson Walker Simpson

Foll: Warnock Curnow Murphy
C: Thomas McLean Everitt

HF: Robinson Waite Gibbs
F: Menzel Henderson

Int: Bell Kruezer Ellard (Garlett)

I like Yarran in defence. It's his best position and he is much more consistent and damaging in that role.
Simpson plays the extra defender role very well. There is heaps of run and attack from defence.

Midfield picks itself. Kruezer, Waite, Henderson will push through key fwd positions with Warnock doing 80% ruck.

Curnow on Boak. Saw him play on Boak last year at Etihad and did a great job.

Garlett my sub. When sting out of game and players will really tire in first game of year he can cause damage.

Port were the boom side last year. But wont be this year. Not good enough.OK,but just OK.If we are going anywhere you would want to hammer a side like Pt Adelaide wouldnt you ? Sure, our side looks to lack a bit of of zip,but despite that lack of zip, reckon we can box 'em up on the boundary and pulverize 'em.Etihad is a very qquick deck.Despite that,i reckon it lends itself to stronger sides, not qqquicker sides. And i reckon we have a distinct advantage in physical strength.Get 'em in close and maul 'em.Just gotta watch the sneaky leakers out the back such as Monfries,Robbie Gray,Wingard etc. These guys are the masters of the cheapie.Zac needs to pulverize these blokes every chance he gets.Sow the seed of doubt and i reckon they will turn it up.................Reckon if we are a half decent side we should finish all over this mob.In a nutshell "Speed Kills".So we just gotta kill there speed and we are on our way.
Good luck to every player on our list, all the various coaches, all our staff.Have a great year.

Hopeful but not confident. I long for the days where you knew 'good Carlton' would rock up more often than not.

That's my concern as well. Gibbs, Walker and Yarran haven't played much since the North game.
