In a bizarre twist the last goal of the game was scored by Allan "Butch" Edwards after a blatant mark was not awarded to Peter McConnville deep in the Carlton Backline very late in the last quarter, 27 years later Allan "Butch" Edwards son Jake would be drafted by Carlton in the 2005 National Draft.

Your memory is spot on mate.....McConville was disallowed a mark; allowing Rocky Wearmouth to grab the ball and handball
it to Edwards, who kicked Collingwood's 11th goal; leaving them to trail by four points at the 27 minute mark.

Jezza's replacement, Marcel Marcou then kicked a point, and the siren sounded, with us winning by 5 points.

P.S. I'll be putting up some terrific stuff on Harmesy soon....the very first Norm Smith Medal winner.

Remember than one well: McConville should have been paid the mark (although he shouldn't have juggled it, he was better than that). Marcou should have kicked a goal - and should have got "in the back", as that was pretty blatant. In the end, we won and they didn't.

I was also just soooooo annoyed that Billy Picken got frees for going within 5 m of the ball and ducking his head.

Yes mate.....I thought Picken played fairly well on Maclure; and in fact was named BOG by the 7 Sun Footy Writers, yet...

looking at the stats; Picken had only 13 kicks .....including 7 Free Kicks..... .....and just 5 marks.

The Dominator had the most marks of any player.....7.

Two "Experts" had Robbert Klomp as BOG ! ??? .....(10 kicks...3 marks)

Their best player votes totalled:

13....Picken.

7....Buckley

6....Klomp, Francis, and Harmes....(even 'tho he got the Norm Smith as BOG)

3....Johnston.

1....Fitzpatrick......(The Observer had him as BOG)

Klomp did an excellent job on Kink, but he was almost designed to be a Kink - Killer.

Although Harmes, stats are not particularly flattering.

Harmes' move to the centre (with Jezza moving to the back pocket) in the second quarter paid immediate dividends.

Up until that point we didn't even look like scoring a goal.

Then of course Harmes' dive in the last quarter.

Harmes was the catylist of our win no doubt.

This is the front page of The Sun ....Monday, October 1-1979; followed by a couple of pics of Jezza and his Wife Anne Maree
at the post match celebrations at the old Southern Cross Hotel....they were both very tearful and emotional.

I've got a fair bit of good stuff relating to the '79 Flag win....I'll just keep adding to it as we go along.

Ralph Bernardi was another in a long line of Melboure Lord Mayors who barracked for Carlton.

Geez didn't we squander that opportunity to develop a stadium of substance at Princes Park.

Or were we fortunate to be able to stay there for as long as we did due to the continual neighborhood opposition to our presence there.

Interesting question. :?

Yes mate....Sir Leo Curtis.....Maurice Nathan.....we had Menzies in the front row of the Heatley
with the PM's Limo parked next to the stairs.....Malcolm Fraser....
we were the first Club to have Superboxes for Corporates....
we were the Silvertails....we had it made......then we became too arrogant for our own good.

It's going to be a case of starting all over again in lots of respects.

We desperately need the team to start winning....that's number one...(off field)

With the neighbours....my bro lives in Canning Street around the corner;
why do people buy a house near a footy ground if they don't want the
associated problems?....or near an Airport?

Don't want to nit pick, but i'm sure it was Butch Edwards who flicked the ball out of McConville's hands after he hand 3 bites of the cherry (in wet conditions mine you!) and slotted thru a nice left foot slap. The goal umpire ran almost to the behind post b4 straightening and signalling a goal..........i could of died.

Hats off to Marcel. One who doesn't get the accolades of the "finals" masters Johnno & Harmes but played extremely well in the 79, 81 & 82 triumphs.

Certainly, and Marcou iced the 1982 Grand Final after a great knock on from Mark Maclure - who was the backbone of all those triumphs.

When Sellers knocked the ball out the back door to Marcou for the sealer.....we were home!

Heres some more stuff from "Inside Football" and "The Age" following the match; possibly the last GF where they swapped jumpers?

Yeah otherwise for those clubs like St. Kilda who have only won one premiership - the only photo you would have of your Captain holding the premership cup aloft would be one where he would be wearing a Collingwood jumper.

Yeah....I'll put up some more pics where I think Michael Young, Jim Buckley, Southby, Sheldon and Peter Brown swapped jumpers........I wouldn't.....no way !

Why would you want to look back at....and hand on to your kids; a Collingwood jumper?

Yes my friend....we do......but....

We're getting a few of the right types at the Club now aren't we?

Well....I suppose I'm talking of Simpson and Murphy and Gibbs to compare to Buckley, Sheldon and Buckley for instance.....or am I clutching at straws?

I've got some good stuff to put up here in the near future that I'm sure you'll be interested in.

Wrapping up the generalities of the 79 Grand Final, before some good individual stories appear in these pages.

First up is Jezza resting up at home afterwards with his family.

His Son Ben was considered to be a likely prospect at about 12-13, but didn't progress.

Then there's this great shot of Ken Sheldon and Geoff Southby embracing with joy after the siren with George Harris in the background.

Image

Finally; a great memory of a great relationship Carlton had with major sponsor AVCO.

Russell Ohlsen was a Ruck Rover from the John Nicholls country area of Maryborough....
Born: 01-12-1955....184cm and 83.5kg.

Russ played 47 games for Carlton; and kicked 25 goals in the period....1975-78.

He was never a star; but was a good and honest tagging type of utility player.

He had a dispute with us; and left to join Collingwood for the 1979 season.....
where he played for 3 seasons...'79-'81; for 50 games and 22 goals.

Ray Byrne arrived in 1973 from Golden Square in our prolific Bendigo area to Carlton;
where he stayed until 1978.

I liked Ray's footy....a bit like Hickmott in a straight ahead no fuss way.

Ray Byrne: 81 games...13 goals...182cms and 79.5 kgs.

A natural backpocket/back flanker; Ray unluckily played in Carlton's losing 1973 GF side.

Even worse....he missed out at least hypothetically, in playing in
Carlton's 1979- 1981-1982 Premiership Sides.....instead playing in Collingwood's losing 79 and 81 sides.

Similarly; Russ Ohlsen played in Collingwood's losing Grand Final sides of 1979 and 1980.

Here we have two pics from the 1979 Grand Final....one of Ray Byrne

failing to prevent Wayne Johnston from marking; whilst the

other is a poignant photo of two old Bendigo mates both in tears after the Final siren.....

Trevor Keogh and Russell Ohlsen.....one winner and one loser......

That's Life isn't it?

IIRC from the 79 GF video, Keogh whacked Olsen in the face that very same day - great to see that they could forget about it afterwards. By the way, only 1 Collingwood player (Kink) remonstrated with Keogh & he backed down pretty quickly coz there were a few Carlton players ready to get stuck in if he tried (esp Dominator).
