Hopefully Murphy has shaken off the rust. 60% disposal efficiency. 1 tackle. 5 clangers. Only 3 clearances.
I hope so. He was bloody pathetic tonight in every way.
Not alone though.
Our game plan allows teams to get between the defence and the goal. No change from last year. Their game plan has a wall of three behind our highest forward. Thus the bombing to a Freo player or in many cases, a group of Freo players. Not good enough. Our attack is pathetic. Not the players, the way we go about it.
Fyfe showed Gibbs how to play midfield. I hope he learned something. Fyfe ran all night. Gibbs didn't. His lowlight was one beautiful pass to advantage followed by his standing still admiring his foot skills when he might have run inside fifty and presented an option. I am sure Bolton would have written that one down.
Our hand and foot skills were way off the mark and unless we can improve them a LOT, the season will be long and frustrating.
The new ruck rule means Freo will enjoy a clearance bonanza for years until someone finds a 210 cm ruck. Sandilands will be able to play until he is about forty in the knowledge he can give his mids an armchair ride without having the opposing ruck jump into him or a third man jumping over him. Meanwhile we have Kreuzer, who can't jump much and so is severely hampered by the new rule.
Cripps was obviously lacking a decent preseason. He won't be 100% for a while yet so Murphy and the rest will have to do more until then.
Silvagni J. must be having the second year Blues. He can't get near the footy. His cousin had a serviceable game and should play round one.
We were shown up for pace all night. It's going to be a problem unless Cunningham and Boekhurst can break into the team with SPS and even then we will still be a few quick players lacking.
On the positive side, Weitering looks as natural up forward as he does down back. I hope he plays down back, though or we have wasted another high pick on McKay.
Pickett looks overweight to me but he knows how to play footy. He will play every game unless he gets injured.
Simpson was one of the few who ran out the game. As usual.
The rest didn't inspire. I thought the three quarter time score flattered us.
McArthy was worth waiting for for Freo. He was one of the big differences between the two teams. Along with their entire running brigade.
