the thing that hurts most is if we started with lucas and russell/bower in place of joseph and watson we win that game.

watson geez i wanna give the kid time but he makes lance whitnall look like black caviar.. only faster
and we are -2 goals per week with joseph in the side every week

soul destroying and the rest of the comp is laughing at as.... and selectors GAGF you are out of your minds

After that little piece of analys, I think you need to sit down and have a good long think about what you have written, I hope it is just disappointment talking.

Everyone on this site has just wanted them to have a crack, and they did, all of them.

AJ battled hard and while he made mistakes I can't see how Lucas would have done any better.

Your criticisim of Watson IMO is just wrong, on current form neither Bower or Russell would have made any difference, I think Watson has played well in his last two games and maybe it is time to leave him in the side for an extended period to see how he settles in and if he can make it.

Players made mistakes last night, but had a go

i think you have sit down and have a good think about supporting the melbourne football club

oh everything is great they had a crack

HAVING A CRACK EACH WEEK SHOULD BE A GIVEN

I think it you that needs to follow Melbourne mate

Its amazing that regardless of boys on the park that some fans do nothing other than criticise if they dont win.

We should have won last night agreed but was a definite turnaround from last week that should be recognised as a positive step.

Not an acceptable step but you cant go from losing to port to premiers in a week.

Be happy the boys had a crack - the signs were good. Ok to be dissappointed in the loss but not at the expense of your support form the team.

We are not near the ladder leaders with the outs we have - it is that simple and wishing for it and criticising everything will not change that.

Consider the outs we have back in the team and with the effort last night we are a lot better proposition.

Backline with Laidler in is a good one.
Midfield with Murph and Carrots in is a good one.
Rucks are competative enough.
F/ward line with Waite in is a ? but confidence & effectiveness should lift with the strength back in the Backs & Mids so long as delivery improves

Last night the boys did enough to show there up for the challenge - and have room to improve.

Place yourself in the team and imagine your confidence of winning with the outs we have - they held up well and better than I expected considering last weeks prformance....They are down but on the way up.....Cannot go from an absolute disgrace to a champion team in a week!

Tuohy is going to be a a cracking asset to our team and will go a long way to toughening up our contested footy credentials....One of the biggest positives out of last night for mine.....

Reading this ,and hearing some callers on radio, I wonder if it looked worse on TV than live?
I'm going to watch a few quarters on the replay and find out.
I thought the boys put a lot of effort in tonite, and Watto surprised me. way better than I thought he'd
be. Only last quarter really he got tired i think.

No BG I don't think it looked any worse on TV, I didn't go to the game and while I was disappointed that we lost I thought we had a proper go and in the end were undermanned.

Some people will never be pleased no matter what and there will always supporters to want to tip it on the club and the players no matter what happens.

Not you and i buddy... were happy!!!!

were rapt!!!

cant see what the fuss is all about!!!

Yeah he had a HUGE hand in the 2.9 we kicked in the last quarter while he was rucking

Two clear shocking mistakes in the last Qtr was his lack of awareness to allow West to mark in the Square and what was he thinking when instead of knocking it through for a point he taps it down to the front of the goal square for a free and goal to Stokes

Sometimes you have to go backwards to go forward.

please dont compare us to geelong, and you dont really think joseph should be getting a game ahead of lucas do you???

I am not comparing us to Geelong merely using it as an example and it is just one of many over the years, if you like I wil use Carlton of 1980 if it makes you feel better, in 79 we won the flag, missed the finals in 1980 and won back to back 81,82.

As far as Lucas getting a game ahead of Joseph is concerned, they are two completely different players and have different roles in the side, so a like for like comparison is pointless and Lucas wouldn't be able to get in as hard as Joseph, so I figure that with our current problem being at stoppages and contested ball, no I wouldn't have Lucas in the side above Joseph.

You would replace someone like Simpson or maybe Walker for Lucas.[/quote]

Just being pedantic, but we made the finals in 1980. Finished second after the home and away games, then finished fourth after losing the Qualifying and First Semi-final.

Sinners I wasn't happy that we lost and nobody is denying that there are problems, but it was a damned side better than it has been and we have to start somewhere, I know that doesn't work for you, but that is just bad luck.

I'll set you a challenge, tell me what can be done to return the team to the form that they showed in round 3 and see if you can do it without talking about sacking the coach or about Sticks handing out jobs for the boys because that won't get our injured players back and I'm pretty sure it won't help next week against West Coast.

Lewis Jetta should be getting a game ahead of Lucas.

Ah yes, the 1980 season. After taking us to the 1979 flag Jezza walked in support of George Harris. When the dust settled we were then coached in 1980 by Percy Jones after Serge knocked back the job.

Not a lot of comparisons to 2012 to be drawn there (including the likelyhood of finishing second on the ladder). The chances of Ratts indulging in a little bout of fisticuffs with an opposition coach is probably fairly slim too.

Time to not lose our cool and remember this season is finished as far as a flag threat. All that matters is seeing who can make a difference next year. Based on tonight, at least 3 younger ones will and Brock too.

And welcome back to football Mr Gibbs. Solid game.

Simpson a standout.

Not so sure the team is finished for the year. If we get back Murph, Carrots, Laidler, Waite and Scotland in the second half of the year and have some luck from there with injuries, and play with the same intensity we played with last night, then we can beat anyone. There's a flag up for grabs this year, a team from outside top 4 may well win it. Only problem is we may struggle to make the eight.

At least the last month has prepared me for how to better use the weekends. Not expecting to win. Or to make the finals. So I now watch the games a few days afterwards, when I'm a bit less emotional.

Tried hard, but simply not polished enough in the end. Butchered the ball going into 50, and obviously when shooting at goal as well. Defensive pressure really fell away in the last quarter.

Before the game, only thought we could win if Betts kicked 5. He didn't quite. And we didn't quite.

Betts was superb.
Warnock very good again.
Nice to see Simpson back in some form. Same with Duigan.
Gibbs best game for a while. But still think we need to re-train him in a more offensive role (midfield/forward) for our long term benefit. Unless we intend to play him as a defensive tagger for the rest of his career. If so, I hope his new contract is only slightly above what Joseph is getting.
Really promising performances from Collins, Watson and Bootsma.
I thought Kreuzer, Hammer, Hendo and Garlett all competed pretty hard. But all failed to contribute on the scoreboard when it really counted. So many easy dropped marks in the forward 50. Not sure if Hendo's hands are allergic to the forward 50. Really good mark in defence. Good mark when leading outside of the forward 50. But as soon as he gets inside, they seem to turn to concrete. Really really hope they make a long term decision about where they want to play him. I think we need him to develop forward, but I can live with him playing back. It's a bit like what they're doing with Gibbs. Playing him in roles where we may possible eke out a few more wins but to our long term detriment. It feels a bit like the same is happening with Walker at the moment as well. We're playing him midfield so we can get a bit more run, but we really need/want him playing forward. The set ups just not quite right. We've got Armfield, Judd and Walker streaming forward and trying to deliver the ball to our forwards (and burning it). And we've got Gibbs playing full back.

Judd Walker and Armfield all have something Gibbs doesnt and that is the reason gibbs will rarely be seen in the midfield streaming forward with the ball.

He can get some space off half back and stream forward like he did against the Dees but not as an onballer. Doesnt have the pace or the run in his game and plays more inside just slamming it on his boot when onball. Waste and if playing that role would hope his new contract has him getting paid little more that curnow.

Gibbs stays HB for me. He gets a bloke to destroy and provide attack. I know he wasnt so attacking on Johnston but that is a big job and a confidence booster for coming weeks.

I reckon a good defense with a set back six or seven will be great for carlton going forward.

laidler Jamo touhy
Gibbs Henda/Watson Duigan/Yaz

That is pretty solid to me.

I think Gibbs is best suited to HB while Scotland is out.

Wouldn't mind seeing him given a game or two forward of the centre once Scotland and Laidler are back up and running.

I don't mind Gibbs playing half back if he's getting free or playing as the loose man and rebounding. But if we're developing him to play as a shut down defender for the next 7-8 years, then we're wasting one of our genuinely elite decision makers and ball users. We're going to lose the next 3 games, and limp into 9th by the end of the season. I want us to make longer term decisions about what roles we are going to develop players in.

Also not sure exactly what's going on with Yarran. Is he only playing because we're so low on numbers? Not really sure that it helps the team or Yarran himself that much to play a quarter and a half as a small forward.
