I'd play two on Franklin, just to make sure, he is their #1 match winner BY FAR.
he has so many damn score involvements, take him out of the game, and we win.
I'd go as far as saying he's probably the only player in the AFL that demands a double team but its worth the risk
Hendo most likely, plus Duigan or Laids one metre in front of them all day aswell.

Or Jamo if in, plus Duigs or Laids as support

I'll predict it now.

Hawks flood our forward 50. We kick something like 8.15 for the game. Someone like Robbo or Simmo kicks 2, the rest cheap or manufactured goals. We get a brief run on in the third quarter, but kick inaccurately to make anything of it.

Buddy has a quiet game, AJ smashes Rioli again, someone like David Hale pops up with 4-5 and we go down by about 30-40 points after Hawthorn take their foot off the pedal in the last.

I reckon (hoping  ) that kind of thing is a thing of the past.

Gunna be difficult limiting their score if they get enough inside 50 opps.

Dunno if I'm going yet Rhino - should be an awesome atmosphere though

I say that knowing full well we don't play Etihad again this season, and as such, it's a non event. If we played them at the G, I'd rate us.

We're just deplorable at Etihad, especially against a team who are proactive with their defensive set up against us.

Hasn't that been debunked, assuming we finish 5th?

Hmm....bugger.

There's unconfirmed reports that Carlton would get a home final at the MCG. But if you think about it logically, Etihad has contracts for finals (which the AFL can try and work around every year).

You'd think there is 3 finals MAX at the MCG in Week 1. Collingwood v WCE/Carl is a lock probably on a Sunday. Geelong v Hawthorn you'd think is a lock, too on Saturday. That leaves Friday night for MCG.

Here are, I think, the scenarios.... Home team listed first.

Carl/Ess - MCG, StK/Who Cares - Etihad
StK/Ess - MCG, Carl/Syd - Etihad
Ess/Stk - MCG, Carl/Syd - Etihad
Stk/Syd - Etihad, Carl/Anyone - MCG

I don't think it's a foregone conclusion, but I hope things work for a Blues MCG final.

As for this game, I think we can take the Hawks apart. I think the Blues can run harder and with finally a KPP back to help with a sometimes wavering defense it could be good.

The key is going to be getting past the zone Hawthorn will set up from Blues kick outs. We got smashed against West Coast and Western Bulldogs at Etihad by our inability to effectively control possession from a kick out.

I have a feeling we'll get Umpire Vozzo this week. He was the nuffie who made stupid calls against Melbourne. At least Chamberlain last week was hardly seen or heard from.

We could also feasibly play St Kilda, Fremantle or Norf in first week as well.

Recent years have had:

2010 - 2 v 3 on Fri night, Perth game Saturday, 5 v 8 on Sunday
2009 - 5 v 8 on Fri night, 1 v 4 on Sunday
2008 - 2 v 3 on Fri night, 2 interstate games Sat, 1 v 4 on Sunday
2007 - 2 v 3 on Fri night, 5 v 8 (Etihad), 6 v 7 (G - Collingwood) both on Sat, 1 v 4 on Sunday
2006 - 6 v 7 on Fri night, 1 v 4 (Subi) on Sat night, 5 v 8 on Sunday

I reckon Collingwood vs. West Coast goes on a Sunday, given that they'd draw a decent crowd, but questionable TV ratings, unless Freo finish 6th.

Hawks/Geelong to me seems a no brainer for Saturday night. The other two interchangable depending on who plays who. Essendon*/Carlton seems a Fri night at the G proposition, Saints vs. Sydney at Etihad on Saturday afternoon....again TV ratings. No-one wants to watch those two sides play.

On the other hand - would Essendon* and St Kilda both request their game to be at Etihad? If so, they'd have to play it in the unfashionable spot on a Sat afternoon (or play Hawks/Cats fri night).

From a ground perspective, surely the view would be to have a Fri night match at the G, then have the next game there on Sat night, to avoid any turf issues?

Also - if North make it, do we play them on a Sunday, given they'd play on the Sunday afternoon in Rd 22 anyway?

I looked at history as well.
After the first week there IS a pattern
Last 10 years loser of 2v3 plays winner of 6 v 7 on the second Friday of the finals
if that continues, and Saints v Essendon* is 6v7 then that game will have to be Saturday
Can't play sunday week 1 and have a 5 day break

Week 2 there are 2 matches, for TV, one will be friday night one will be Saturday night
working back looks to me that week 1 will be
Geel v Haw Friday MCG
Stk v ess sat arvo
Coll v Eagles sat pm MCG
Carl v Swans/freo/north sunday MCG
they then make our game the series ticket to boost the numbers

just my opinion

Are we really that bad at Etihad?

We smashed the supreme (at the time) St.Kilda there last year and nearly knocked off Geelong there this year

When we lost to Dogs/WC this year it was due to heavy running loads at training taking their toll at the time

Early in the year we struggled in general converting under the pressure of the press, it made us struggle in games against Crows (Etihad), St.K (Etihad), and Ess (MCG)

Look clearances are everything. If 206 can get on top and get it to Judd and Co, then the fwds should score

Collingwood haven't beaten a team above them all year.

Think Jamo will be named with the intention of throwing a cat among the pigeons, although I don't think Buddy will be too worried about playing on a bloke who's missed 6 weeks.

I reckon if we play the Bummers in 5v8 or the Filth in 1v4 we'll be Friday night, maybe Saturday night.

Anyone else and it'll be Sunday due to Norf playing Sunday in Rd 24 and Sydney or Freo having to travel to Melbourne for the final.

I intensely dislike them too!!!
Agree with everything you wrote, except I quite admire sam Mitchell...(mostly for his troubles with the baby)I guess I can't remember anything too shocking that he's done.
But yeah.....99% loathe and detest them for sure!!!
That day with Fevv............   Will never forgive them for that. Jerks.

Wonder how we implement that?

Do we sub him off midway through the third?
Do we have him on and off the ground with Thornton playing back and forward as need be?

If we go in with a clear view to sub him off, do we play the extra tall, just in case?

Davies was probably playing around 70% of game time so they could possibly just swap Davies out for Jamo and use him in the role Davies has been playing rather than give him a big job on a gun player.

Its all about testing his fitness and getting him right for the all important finals.
