So why did he sack him again? :)

Yeah, exactly. He all but directly stated that Connolly was taking the total responsibility for Freo's failure to fulfill their potential.

Connolly is an upbeat and positive coach, in the case of Freo it seemed to promote a culture of laziness and unaccountability. A bit of his style of coaching would be welcomed at any club that is recovering from 5 years under the iron fist of Pagan, but the question remains whether Ratten can't provide that positive reinforcement on his own. Perhaps Connolly is actually a shrewd opperator behind the scenes? Sticky would know.

I can't really identify why, but Connolly does absolutely nothing for me. Freo played crap football and were self indulgent during his reign I'm just not sure what he brings.

Seems because he is an ex coach he has some cachet in some circles. I'd prefer to let Ratten choose his own team - and he doesn't seem to me the sort of bloke who needs someone 'experienced' holding his hand.

Further, if we want a good bloke we've already got TD.

I still reckon that Connolly as an out and out assistant coach is a bad idea. Let Ratten do his job without the added pressure of an ex-senior coach looking over his shoulder.

If Connolly is there in a development role to assist the kids, or some other task that is not directly involved with the match day role, well, I could possibly warm to that idea.

Foxtel's sports channels are reporting that Swann 'announced' Ratten as the senior coach.

Selecting a new, untried coach is probably the hardest thing to judge for us supporters because we have no real insight into coaching (as opposed to playing which we can see with our eyes)

I hope Ratts is great.

But I am not comfortable with the process, or lack thereof, that we seem to have undertaken.

Ratten was out coached today. The changes Sheedy made in the second half, Ratten didn't know how to respond (and didn't).

At the start of the year we beat Essendon*, towards the end of the year we lost to Essendon*. Have we improved under Ratten?

Yes We Have, Fevola kicked 8 goals against them last time, how many did he kick today? 0. If it wasnt for Fevola they would have crushed us last time.

Quote:
Two days after Ratten officially withdrew from the Melbourne coaching race, Carlton chief executive Greg Swann confirmed that the former club captain and three-time best-and-fairest winner was the preferred choice of the four-man Carlton selection panel.

"We were very, very specific that we wanted the best person for the job and that's what we've got," Swann told Triple M radio today.

"It's not about jobs for the boys. To be honest with you, it (his close Carlton affiliations) probably counted against him.

"These days with that famous word (sic) of corporate governance, you actually look a lot harder at the people that you know and that are involved in the club. And that's what happened."

Did we have Stevens and Cloke out there today? Ratten wasn't outcoached - there were no specific moves or lack of moves that led to us losing. There are consistent reasons as to why we aren't able to get across the line:

- our lack of a proper ruckman. Having Setanta in the ruck takes away one of our key defenders. Bring in Cloke (who was doing really well at the start of the year) and we do better in the centre clearances and have a tighter defence.

- our lack of that little bit of extra midfield polish. Stevens in frees up Murphy and good luck to any opposition when that happens.

Dont criticise Ratten for doing what people on here have been calling for for a long time. He had faith in the kids - I'm really glad he kept Jamison on Lloyd for the whole game. I thought Jamo had a really good game and looks really good.

Is it the fact that because Ratten got the job you're uncomfortable or that you know exactly the process that was undertaken and therefore that has upset you??

See if they want to appoint Ratts. That's fine, no real problem with the apointment as I've said previously.

But seriously, do they have to pretend that corporate governance was observed? .... Bond is supposedly the other candidate they were seriously considering, but it has already been reported he wasn't even asked to present to the panel.
