Dan Houston reveals desire to play for Carlton coach Michael Voss before Collingwood trade
Dan Houston has revealed he wanted to join Carlton and reunite with Michael Voss before being traded to arch rival Collingwood. This is how his Blues dream fell apart.

Collingwood recruit Dan Houston wanted to play for Michael Voss and the Carlton coach wanted him too, before the Blues made a trade period pivot to go after pick No.3.
Houston was one of the trade period’s most wanted men and met with Collingwood, Carlton, North Melbourne, St Kilda, Western Bulldogs and Melbourne.
Finding a deal that satisfied Port Adelaide was always going to be the sticking point in luring the dual All-Australian back to Victoria, with a complex trade between the Power, Pies and Gold Coast eventually getting it done.
But before then, the Blues were seen as a frontrunner for the half-back.
Carlton snagged pick 14 from Hawthorn midway through the trade period but instead of using that to try and nab Houston, Blues list boss Nick Austin chose to work up the draft order and ended up with the third pick in next month’s draft.
That choice put fierce rivals Collingwood in the pole position to land the rebounder.
While Carlton is now in position to draft a young star, Voss’ team would likely have been better in 2025 with Houston instead.
Houston had played under Voss when he was an assistant coach at Port Adelaide and ran into the Carlton coach at the Hawthorn cafe in which Voss apprehended two people in a stolen car incident this year.
“We had some open conversations, I have a good relationship with him and I wanted to play for him and he wanted to have me in the team,” Houston said.
“It didn’t look throughout the whole time the Blues could get the job done and it sort of chopped and changed a bit.
“In the end it was the Pies. I am super happy it was the Pies and that was one of my preferences throughout the whole year.”
Houston first told Power coach Ken Hinkley he was leaning towards a return to Victoria during the bye week in the middle of the season, with his family and partner all living in Melbourne.
He said he couldn’t wait to play in front of the famous Magpie army.
“I have been pretty open minded the whole time and once the Pies really came into the picture over the last five or so days, I have been able to really wrap my head around what it means for them,” Houston told 3AW this week.
“All the fans have been super supportive and it is such a nice feeling walking into a big club like that and having such a nice reception.”

Gee there's some optimistic people around here re: Young

You can say the same about those with opposite views with the same conviction.

He's a divisive player no doubt.
But, whilst he's on our list, and selected in the 3 games of the season to play KPD last game we played, and he was one of our better players in that Final, he has some value. Doesn't mean he's the best in the business but all we have for a KPD role until we see how Voss picks his team in round 1 with Haynes in the picture.

No surprise he has been seen in a more favourable light than he was during the year. I guess Shit sticks.

We have to accept the view of him with both a glass half empty and a glass half full view.

He's the best KPD we have after Weitering, imo
He gives us height and marking power against taller opponents, something Kemp and Gov don't. Hence his selection ahead of them as KPD at the pointy end of the season.
Sure we need to improve on him, but he's way ahead of Gov and Kemp against the 200cm forwards, imo.

Gov's contract expires at the end of next year; he will be 31 going onto 32 in 2025. He's no keeper. Haynes may take his spot.
Kemp showed interest in joining saints and comes out of contract at the end of 2024. He's not a KPD, and no sure bet he will be with us past 2025.
Haynes is 193cm and an AA intercept defender; AA just 2 years ago before illness. He's over his illness. He's no KPD either.

He's all we have. We have to be optimistic in the hope Vossy can help him develop his game and confidence; play to his strengths, or he is over looked.

We know his shortfalls, and we know his strengths, and we know he needs to improve parts of his game. The optimism may lie in the chance he improves and develops his confidence, or he continues to show the form he showed in the last 3 games.

I can't see the point in the alternative, the negative outlook, until we know he's no use to us.

I too hope Motlop has a break out season, or he could be in trouble imo.

Owies was the small forward out of contract, so he was the unlucky one to be shopped out.

Motlop, Fogarty, Durdin, Fantasia all come out of contract end of 2025. Williams contract ends 2026.

The small forwards have a lot to play for next year. Lets hope its a driver for them to take the next step.

Apart from Fogarty, I don't think any of the other small forwards have staked their claim.

Moir is not a small forward, and h's pressing to take Owies' role as a lead up 3rd forward.

Plenty of pressure on spots if McInnes can keep them all fit for purpose.

I agree.

Get him a good psych and ii would be remiss of Vossy if he doesn't help Young improve, because Young is contracted for 2025 and 2026, not just one year.

Yeah , Voss should be working overtime to help this bloke reach his full potential . Time and time again this bloke steps up to the mark yet gets shitcanned . As you rightly pointed out Bondi young was one of a few who could hold his head high after that Brisbane debacle . And that's not the first time either .

Re Young
Agree with the above. Take him on Vossy

I think he needs a little of the great John Kennedy

And that was one of the great thing about David Parkin. He would drop a player but they came back better.

The best coaches get you up again.

What's a tall left foot????? Would that make him lopsided if his right foot was the normal size???
