Good to see we view this as a development year and have started tanking before the season started. Better to be up front with these things

Tanking suggests we're better than we are playing or we're just not trying, I don't think that is the case. We're just not that great, we're inexperienced and developing. We're a couple of years behind Melbourne in our rebuild. You've got be a little patient.

murphy, gibbs simpson kruezer kerridge docherty smedts rowe plowman palmer thomas casboult buckley ed curnow white wright gorringe- that is 17/22 that are highly experienced or re-used players that played for carlton

that is not a rebuild

I think I heard a comentator say on the weekend we have the most players under 21 on a list. I stand to be corrected if that's not the case.

the entire list of 44 may be and I would need to check, but the above list played and that is not young

Here's an exert from the following article in reference to Carlton's list:

http://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/the-les ... 1712a7c088

In losing 12 players to retirement, delistings and trades last year, the Blues shaved a lot of experience and depth from its list.

It went from being the 10th oldest side in the competition to the third youngest, while Carlton also has the second fewest games per player in the league.

So yes, we have some experienced players on our list as you have noted. But as whole we are inexperienced and it will take time to develop and get them up to speed.

Wins and losses are not critically important for me. I love seeing the youngsters get a game and seeing them improve.
I'd be happy to win 5 games but to see improved consistency through games and improvement from the kids.

My issue with the weekend was the style of play. I mentioned in the training thread that the snippets I saw of training indicated we are handballing the ball to players ahead of the play.
I have concerns if that continues. St Kilda cleaned us up twice last year playing a very similar style but I don't believe its sustainable. It encourages players to run ahead of the play hoping to get a possession.
If it comes off great. If not, you are exposed defensively which we saw numerous times on the weekend. By all means encourage run and uncontested possession but there have to be parameters. The run has to come from the defensive side or parallel to the play. The theory of a player facing goals hand balling to someone with their back to goal is over possessing the footy. The structure would be better served by the player in possession kicking the ball and the offensive runner making the next contest.
I think we're promoting a game style that rewards downhill skiing.

I watched the replay last night and thought Melbourne just didn't allow us to settle long enough to play to any structure.

Everything was rushed and messy disposal wise.

A few good cameos, but definitely not judging anyone based on the performance.

The Demons on the other hand played with intent. I don't see it as a realistic view of improvement for them in 2017. Let's see how they go when we are on an even keel and playing for points.

I only saw the highlights and thought Melb handballed in a WBesque fashion but we seemed to have several goals kicked against us from players alone in the square.
hat's not a good sign. I wonder if we pushed too many too far forward?

Agree very noticeable from the game handballing the ball forward! The problem being they are usually stationary and unlike a mark the opposition can attack the man with the ball putting them under pressure for a turnover which is what continually happened. Unless you are free forward of the ball I don't see the point in the tactic??

I hate watching on TV... Anyway BV is right, we handballed forward, players ran forward. Dees blocked the contest OR went where they knew we would pass to. Dumb play by us. Result was they had more than us at any contest and players free when they won it. Seemed only Murphy was running back when we lost possession OR he was playing full back.

BTW, our guys weren't smart. If we had a free possession we would still short kick to a player who was also free... What's the gain? Only meant Dees players had enough time to drop back...

ON NOW | Carlton coach Brendon Bolton.

"We always go out to try and perform. The JLT is what it is. It gives you really good feedback"
Brendon Bolton: "We are building from the back, but we do want to improve the other end as well. We have some young quality coming through"
Brendon Bolton: "From our end, he (Thomas) has had a terrific pre season. We've pushed him heavily. He has a lot of work behind him"
Brendon Bolton: "The balance between wing and forward is probably where we need him (Dale Thomas)"
Brendon Bolton: "Our high performance team are saying that we should be able to see Cripps before the end of the JLT series"

Someone desperately hopeful that he will string a few good games together and consequently prove, if ever so slightly, the decision to pay him a small fortune was the correct one.

But then again, why would Mick care now?

Re Thomas - he was asked about him.
What are you expecting him to say: He is training really hard but frankly nowhere near worth what we are paying for him - can't wait to move him on and I actually would rather play Jaksch or young Tom Williamson than Thomas but I keep picking him b/c Jeannie Pratt tells me to... ??

I thought that amongst all the usual stuff, he highlighted precisely the right things - mostly similar to what many have said on this site:
a) We overused the ball with too much handball
b) We need a more defensive mindset

Am looking forward to this Saturday - am not expecting us to play like it was a Prelim Final. I am looking for improvement in adhering to the game plan, some glimpses of promise from the young'ns, and improvement in skills from last week as we get closer to round 1...

I actually think he'll end up staying but on a realistic (probably year-by-year) contract, I'd imagine less than half of what he is on now. This assumes the extension clause does not automatically trigger similar terms... in which case, no chance.
