There is a problem in its self....
Clubs should always be rebuilding and refining the list, and in fact all aspects of the organization.
I recall a former president of carlton, saying in public that "we never rebuild at carlton"
Mick should have been looking at refining and improving our list even before he was officially appointed.
Instead when preseason started on nov 1st 2012, mick had to go on a book launching tour.
2012 was yet another wasted season for our club. And this season is panning out in the same way.
I'm angry myself but even if Mick hadn't gone on the tour there's not much we could've done. We had no money. That was when the AFL decided to change the rules mid contract and we had to have Judd's extras in the cap.
WhT do you mean we don't have money?
When collo took over to clean up the Elliott mess, we had a total revenue of about 20 million dollars per year and a debt of about 23 million.
We now generate 47 million dollars per year and have a 6 million dollar debt.
It's not about money. Mick is close to the highest paid coach in the league. Our total player payments must be at a minimum of 92% of the salary cap anyway.
We also have one of the richest board directors in Australia.
If we had a competent CEO and visionary president, we would have chased the personnel we needed in a smart and honest manner. Our only problem would have been whether people wanted to come to us. This never use to be a problem. It is now. I M surprised mick signed on after taking a year off. I suppose nobody else would hire mick in today's game,
We did.
And for big dollars....and we also inherited Robert Wiley, as a director of development and coaching. Wrong position for Wiley in my opinion. I would have started Wiley off as an assistant coach or bull ants coach.
I think the only good appointment we have done recently was Dean Laidely. I just wish mick listened to him on game day. Laidley very good with match ups and positional moves on game day.
how do u know laidley is any good anymore?
and how do u know laidley is not being listened to.?
and whats mckays role in all this???
all valid questions Mr S
You only need to look at whats been happening out on the ground to see that Laidley has very little input - especially from the box on game day.
Its possible that Laidley is all washed up, finished, gone down the drain, but how would we know if he isnt being utilised for the talents he was recruited for???
If you want to see the Malthouse philosophy in its grand mastery, see the 2011 GF.
Poor old Reid stayed onto Hawkins and was being mauled almost right up to the end of the game. He also kept Didac onto Scarlett for the whole game, and even in the last quarter wouldnt bring on the sub for Didac who was totally ineffective and even allowed Scarlett to influence the game from the back pocket.
As good as the cats were in the second half, I have no doubt that Mick's poor performance in the box that day (especially after the cats lost their full forward and were 5 goals up) was a big factor in their loss. Mick did it again in the first final of 2010 against the saints. Only an inexperienced and equally robotic game day coach in Lyon allowed the pies to draw that GF. Next week Saints were shot
But having said that I understand the malthouse philosophy which is similar to parkins - stable team, and show faith in his players.
I really havent seen the laidley input yet in any of our games. Moving Hendo from defense to the forward line doenst really count.
