Ellard is a great inclusion. He is a little in and under beast but is quick enough to run with a decent player.

No excuse for last week, but there has been a bit of - as Mick once referred to it - blockbuster syndrome going on early in the season.

Hawks set themselves for Rnd 1 against Collingwood, to then lose the week after
Geelong set themselves for Rnd 2 against Hawks, to the look flat and lose to Nth the following week
Nth set themselves for Rnd 3 against Geelong, only to get flogged by Sydney the week after.
Then of course there was us against Collingwood then the horror of Essendon*.
Essendon* last week, whilst getting close, couldn't back it up today.

Hopefully Fremantle fall flat after the build up to the St Kilda game last week.

Judge teams on how they respond. Whilst last Saturday was inexcusable, Friday night will tell us a lot about this team.

I'm predicting the 'drive tackle' will be 'in' starting this week across the comp. Now coaches know it is OK, they should use it as a legitimate tactic to target good players. It's easier than tagging. We should be the first to employ it (well the second really as it was used against us last week).

I'm suggesting we start with Ballantyne and then Pavlich. The fact Pavlich is a scrupulously fair player who would never do it himself shouldn't worry us as Carazzo was one as well and they are the easiest to get as they don't expect it. Any other player who looks like wining his position should follow and so on until the entire team is injure if necessary.

In between all this, we need to protect the corridor better than we did last week. For years we have been vulnerable down the gust because we rarely use it ourselves. If we don't use it, we don't want to defend it. Freo has been a team that has exploited this over the years with their running from half back down the middle in waves. The Ross Lyon game plan probably doesn't involve it as much but we certainly showed a weakness there last week he would be keen to exploit. We can also expect some big hits early so it won't be a place for the faint-hearted. Bryce take note.

The mids will have to play a lot better. Sandilands was injured last time we played them and he still dominated. This time he isn't. Hampson needs to lift his game and get his feet off the ground and jump over the top of him. Kreuzer just has to do what he can.

This is a real danger game for us. We lose and we are in the scrum of the 6-12th placed teams and we don't want that to happen.

Blues to go on the attack

While Ed Curnow (ankle) remains in doubt, though he moved freely at the airport yesterday, Carlton assistant coach Mark Riley said Chris Yarran (toe) had been ruled out of the clash and could even be sidelined for a fortnight.

I saw Curnow tackle a baggage handler, balk the carousel and slot one from the check-in. He'll be fine.

Maybe we need to slot him into one of our quicker line ups so he can be covered. Like the teams we put out in the first 3 rounds but swap him for Curnow. Then we fans will truly know if he can play a part.

The coaches probably already know. They measure his metres per minute. They know how many contests he gets to and whether he is playing his role defensively. I will leave the call up to them.

I was thinking about Mclean slotting into a line up with Kreuzer, Hampson, Judd, Murphy, Carrazzo, Yarran, Simpson, Robinson, Walker, Garlett, Gibbs, Armfield and Lucas. Shame the match committee doesn't appear willing to give it a go with Curnow out. Working Mclean into a quick line up would be a worthy experiment against the Giants.

Mclean and Ellard are better "grunts" than Murphy. One of Geelong's former leaders stated that one of their players would give a teammate a wink and roll over onto Ablett's opponent so he could get free. Murphy could have taken responsibility for Stanton and manned him up like Bradley used to do to Hocking or Matera. Guess it's easier to blame Brock for the downhill skiing and leave the stars alone like fanboys.

For some reason you have Murphy in your sights Kouta. They guy is a star. B&F winner. Multiple runner ups. His role to me looks like an attacking role along with Judds. Blokes like Carrazzo , Curnow and at times Armfield are there to make sure their attacking play has some cover. Murphy is frequently in packs. He has the strength now to keep his feet in them and is one tough player.

Along with the rest of the team his game wasnt top notch last week but he will bounce back. The blues copping a hammering in the ruck wouldnt of helped his game..

Not sure we wanted him matching up Stanton. Robbing peter to pay paul there.

If we start diving on blokes backs in the hope of injurying them I'll be really disappointed. Firstly because I believe we are a better club than to sink to that sort of thing and secondly because of all the free kicks we'll be giving away. Better to roll to the side, pin the ball and go for a holding free.

Agree that this is a pivotal game for us.

It was a poor game by Murphy's standards.

Marc didn't back up the talk that they were a tougher side and would support teammates who were smashed like Carrazzo.

Everyone has to run both ways.

Selwood and Hayes are the definition of tough players.

Thanks Watson.

Kerr came in the top 10 for the time trial. Is he an elite runner?
He might come in.
