I'll wait to hear more from those that were there and saw it up close, but my immediate thought based on the updates is that I'm @#$%&! sick to death of us losing this way (either blown away at the start, or blown away at the end), even if it's just a practice match.

We won't ever be a premiership threat until we stop seeing these sorts of fadeouts/slow starts. I would hope Ratts gave them a gobful afterwards.

Dare say Ratts won't be happy, even if it is a pre-season game.

Ratten will feel more confident about his team's finals prospects this year if they can improve that record.

"It's nice to win a few games through the season where it's an arm wrestle right to the end and you get your nose in front," the coach said.

"Rehearsing those and getting results can be fairly critical in the (finals) lead-up."

Another message Ratten wants his players to take from the fade-out loss to Brisbane in the 2009 finals and their missed scoring chances in last September's five-point defeat from Sydney is that every act counts.

"We have to make sure we don't let our foot off the pedal, especially towards the back end of the season, but also in any game," he said.

"They're the biggest lessons - it's a game of inches and you've got to take your opportunities."

Exactly. Practice games mean nothing. No worth getting ya knickers in a knot over it.

So can we assume no instruction was given to take the foot off the pedal for risk-management, injuries etc?

I'll be curious to hear the post-game from the coach(es)

It's not the defeat that anyone is concerned about (it is the pre-season afterall), it's the manner of the defeat after being up by 4 goals.

I would say if it had been a couple of goals either way all day and good tussle and we lost at the end by 2 goals, no one would've cared. It's the way we lost that has me slightly concerned. Even in the pre-season we should be getting rid of old habits.

Hampson Yaz and Garlett played very good games although Yaz' man got a few goals.

We started off slow which is a worrying habit but from then on dominated until the last 10 mins when we rested a lot of blokes and a lot of our other blokes were cramping. Im hoping this is to do with the training loads at the moment.

Our kicking for goal early in the last didnt help. We were toying with them at that stage but didnt get it on the board.

Ratts will get stuck into them for that but for the fade out i reckon it was half his doing. Not in a bad way either.

Great to be at PP today.

I think people are well within their rights to be disappointed at losing a practice game, especially when it appears consistent with bad habits that have dogged the team for years.

That said, perspective is needed. Which is why it's important to hear what the coaches have to say about it (unless you were at the game and can form your own opinion). Practice games are only meaningless if the coach and/or players want them to be.

Was at the game and enjoyed it til last 1/2 of last quarter. Standouts Were Yaz Hammer Curnow Garlett and Twomey was good with his game time. Watson was obviously a sub and played 2nd half at full back. As has been mentioned lots of cramping in the last quarter. Lachie didn't set the world on fire but had a couple of good runs onto the wing and Jamo played weel in the first half taking grabs above his head and looking very strong. Duigan will really add to the backline and Curnow and Collins could play in Round 1 along with Watson. Carrazzo looked a little rusty and considering the players who were rested i do not think anyone should open their wrists yet. Disappointing overall but with some real gliimmers of what should be great year.

For those that weren't at the game and are now basing their comment on various bit comments from some posters I think you need to lighten up abit. It was a terrific game played in 30degree heat and most quarters went near on 30 mins. It was a bloody hard slog.

The Blues were 2 gls up early in the last and set shot goals were missed Waite, Simpson, Carrots, Walker and a couple of others.

In the last 10 minutes the Cats through Steve J and Selwood won some contested ball and several of the Cats forwards ran ahead of the play to kick goals. Up until then we had their measure. Anyone who was at the game would say there were some great signs overall. We are playing a tough brand of footy and defending well.

Hammer is on the way. Great game.
Yaz was scintilating at times as he cut his way through traffic. He's a gem.
Jeffy was electric everytime he had the ball.
Duigan will be Mr Reliable
Jamo had his best 1 on 1 game for along time.
Robbo has improved.
Laidler was very good with his decision making.
Hendo needed the run as did Carrots and Jordy.
Watson was strong at the contest and did the simple things very, very well. Waity could learn alot from him in that respect.

I think Collins is so far ahead of Griggs it is not funny.

The Blues have had a rock solid pre-season and if you drop the bottom lip about todays final result then you are just a missing the point of it all.

Regards Cazzesman

I'm keen to hear how Watson did on the big bodies such as Mooney, Ottens, Hawkins.
This is the sort of game kids with big raps on them can show their true value.
I expect Watson to hold his own. Did he?

Whilst on the backline, I am wondering how new boys Duigan and Laidler (against his old team) went?

And finally White. How did he go?

With Jamison suspended for the first 2 rounds it's the abovementioned along with Bower who are going to hold the backline together and the oppositions bigger bodies in check.

Twitter has Selwood vs Gibbs. How did Gibbs go?

The fact we were ahead by 3 goals during the 3rd, peppered the goals early in the last before we took our foot off the pedal says a lot about our capability.. Having Hampson Garlett and Yarran stand out is a real win for us, let alone the fact Hendo and Carrazzo start their 2011 campaigns today.

I'm excited...and glad we have the Tigers and Suns in the first 2 rounds
