No - but he's a fair way off the mark...time to focus on the footy now.

Josh K is always on the money, so if he is worried about our culture, then I am worried.

It is really about professionalism, and the level of professionalism required to be a top sportsman, to get the best out of your ability, and to do the absolute best for your club. Professionalism is about getting paid really well not just for your ability but for what you bring to the team every day. Some people think it is fine to be out all night before a recovery session, but we are not talking about suburban footy. Guys are getting big bucks. If any of us were out all night and turned up to a meeting without any sleep, we would probably be viewed as unprofessional. If we were being paid $600-$700k, we wouldn't last long. We had a party culture previously and no leaders, now we have one great leader, some young potentials learning bad habits and senior players who are not professional enough to win a flag.

Ratts has been at the club 2 1/2 years, so has Swann. They need to change the culture now, even if it means losing a few games short term. Sticks needs to be president, be a part of the MC or be one of the boys, he can't be all three. I love his immense loyalty and his role in getting Dick Pratt re-involved, but he is not a president, and while he is on the committee he needs to keep his distance from the players and the coaches. We don't want any misguided loyalties to effect decision making.

We need to do everything to get to the top. If staying out all night early in the week costs us 5% game day, that equates to three extra wins this season. I like Fev, I love the way how he was the one to go back and run with one of our mascots last week (a kid who looked to have been through a really hard time). Fev is guileless and has no malice, but unless he grows up fast he'll go down as an erratically talented Carlton player with no premiership medals, not as a great of the game. He has the talent to be a great and to take the side to a flag. But only if he is willing to show the sort of dedication his captain does. He won't make more money if he becomes more professional and helps us win a flag, but he also won't grow old regretting what might have been.

What I'd like to know is what Judd is doing about this? He's captain, its his role to get the players back on track.

We need Simpson or Murphy to stand up and either support Judd or take the initiative themselves, pull the ringleaders aside, tell them to pull their heads in and concentrate on winning some games of football.

Im very wary of the claims that Fev was out until 7am following the Hawks game as mentioned on BF. If it is true I would suggest he didnt go over the top with alcohol.

Not sure about the recovery session but if the claims about him being out all night and then up early for a recovery session surely he would have been a wreck after that and crashed out in bed.....BUT HE WASN'T.....he was at the ANTS game......very bright eyed, bushy tailed and full of beans, no sign of any hangover, full of energy chasing Matty Lappins little daughter around, no alcohol on his breath, and not scattered at all. He was acting extremely normal and his speech was so clear it would be hard to suggest he was using any stimulants to stay up that long.

Yes he was repeatedly boasting about going to the upcoming Logies after party as I mentioned in another thread, but got absolute no interest at all from his teammates ( these included Krooz, Wiggo,Bower, betts,Sauce,AJ,Army ), they actually seemed unimpressed.

I just find it hard to believe Fev was in such good condition after such an exhausting game against the hawks followed by an all night bender and a recovery session with the possibilty of only a couple hrs rest before he showed up at the Ants.

Where theres smoke theres usually fire, but the accuracy of whats being posted on BF cant be taken too seriously,,,,,,and a photo of Fev and Scotto could just as well been from the off season....there would be no way of dating it.

Ther were recently trolls on Carltons Board on BF providing links to a imposter facebook account of a certain Carlton player whilst insinuating he is gay..... not everything on BF is Bullshite but there is definately some nasty posting that happens there.

I remembered you posting all that and thought the story could not be true. Someone mentioned it was that night it all happened. After the logies. They had to front up that monday anyway for training although as Dr. Sherrin pointed out on his training thread that day it was a suprise training session (at least for him).

Most of the so called eye witnesses say fev wasnt really that pissed and was well behaved.

As for the after game bash on the goldie. I reckon there could have been any number of reasons. I like to believe they got back to the hotel at about midnight. Still wired from the game and buzzing on endorphens and the leadership group headed off for a beer in the hotel bar to discuss where they were at. Captain probably led the way.

The worry would be if fev was drinking before the game in his room as had been suggested. If that was true then that would suggest he has a real problem with booze and should seek help.

I am sure this has been handled well in house and hopefully the team have just shut up shop, got the us versus them attitude going and are real focused on this weeks game against the pies.

Also hope the fuss us fans have caused on this is enough to nip it all in the bud before it gets any worse.

Go Blues !

It's funny that the only contact I had from board members when this thread was first started was veiled threats and denials. 5 months later we've sacked one of the worst protaganists, and 2 months following have witnessed the most shameful day for this football club this century.
I don't care if directors feel the need to keep censoring what I write- I'm not going to stop writing what I hear.
This club has an inherent, ingrained, cancerous party culture that shows no signs of abating. Whatever the club claims they're doing, they are so far behind the ball it isn't funny.

Sadly, it looks like we might need to bring out that broom again.

It's a closed shop again.

No one will challenge unless there's a massive ticket organised.

Maybe it's not all about brooms and tickets, though, perhaps there is another way for the supporters to show their disgust at the current problems.

i agree with this ... have been telling my blues fans colleagues today that the supporters need to voice in some organised, formal way how disgusted we are with this bunch of buffoons. it's clear from this fiasco that too many of the "senior" players are far more interested in the social benefits of being on a list than doing what it takes to add their names to carlton's once proud history.

i know from my time in europe (yes, i know they're crazy there ...) that properly organised supporter representations made on the club can have a positive effect. often these supporter groups will descend onto the training camp and demand counsel / answers from the club's leaders, including players. i'm not advocating a feral, richmond style angry mob.

am sick of guys like scotland, houlihan, betts seemingly being content to be mediocre 150-200 game players. houlihan is a season full of games away from becoming only the 2nd carlton player to reach 200 games without a flag, though if i had my way he'd be shown the door (along with scotland).

i say to these guys, if it's ok for you to demand a rookie to "go hard or go home" when on the turps then it's ok for me to demand that of you on the field ... and i wouldn't say you've been all that convincing really ...

This problem will resurface through 2010 and will be a significant factor that contributes to a mediocre season.

However by about round 15 there will be signs that the necessary changes are coming - changes that will cure Carlton.

the 'party culture' will be replaced by a kind of blandness - but there will be some fairly big scalps, perhaps even a scapegoat - before things really turn around..

Round 15? If we are 2 wins and 3 losses (or less) after 5 rounds, sheisser will hit the fan

No it wont... noone can come up with difficult decisions at the club.. excuses seem to be manufactured much more easily

*sigh*

If the Tiger Woods saga hasn't taught anyone anything, misdemeanours won't be suppressed forever. It will eventually come out and explode.

The problem with dealing with things in-house is that the public never knows about it, the attention and public adulation that these footballers want, and they would argue, need, will remain. Their hero status remains untarnished.

Severe reality checks will not occur unless aired in public. What is $5000 in $300,000 compared to the public shame and the shunning of them by their thousands of adoring fans.

I suspect half the problem is that the players think it's "cool" because quite a large proportion of society think that getting plastered is "cool". If it's acceptable to society, then it's acceptable to them.

I'm going out on a limb here, but what is happening at Carlton is merely a snapshot of what is happening in society at large. The drinking culture is going to affect society more than people imagine. People make binge drinking as having no effect on others. Down the line it will. Unfortunately we're too short-sighted to see this.

We're kidding ourselves if we think supporter/member opinion will matter to the players. Unless the administration and club leaders start to change the culture within the playing ranks, the situation will continue to exist.
I've attended plenty of sponsor/corporate supporter launches and functions over the years and too many players let you know they are accepting and tolerant of their requirement to interact with members/supporters and that's it. I found that if you want to hold a conversation with a player, talk to a player who has come from another club. In fact, players like Saddington, Teague, Morrell etc would work the room and instigate conversations with sponsors whilst Whitnall and co. would stand in the corner looking at their watches. If you approached Lance or one of his cronies, you were left with no other feeling other than you were intruding on their time.

To give you an insight into the leadership that currently exists at our club, I'll share a story from a couple of years ago. Instead of directing funds exclusively to the club, I started sharing the contribution with "The spirit of Carlton". The bonus being that Spirit of Carlton directed all of their funding into the football department which was an area that I wanted to see bolstered.
Anyway, my company sposored a hole at the SOC golf day which entitled us to a round of golf with a current player and past player. It also included dinner with the players at your table. I invited a work colleague to the dinner as he is a huge Carlton fan. Following the golf, we were seated in the dining area for dinner. Our golf and dinner partners were Brett Ratten and Marc Murphy.
Instead of sitting at our table for dinner, Ratten (assistant coach) decided that he had some sort of exemption and took someone elses seat at another table so he could spend the evening chatting to his mates. Forget his responsibilities to the club and sponsors. He knew what was expected of him as a team representative but he didn't give a stuff. After about 2 minutes, you could see MM's mind ticking over. He decided that what was good enough for Ratten was good enough for him. He walked off, sat with some mates for dinner and that was it.

To some people, that may seem a minor incident but to me, it reinforced what was a culture of self interest and zero responsibility.
Personally, I dont blame Murphy. He was a relatively new player and he is there to learn how to behave in that environment and what his responsibilities are. From the assistant coach he learnt to disregard his responsibilities and do what he wanted. I didn't expect a lot better as I'd had similar experiences from the playing group but my guest was disappointed and pissed off. Fortunately Crosisca and Rhys Jones were on our table as guests of another sponsor and they made an effort to talk to my guest.

Our club still has a culture from the Elliott days that will take time and effort to eradicate. If you think it's going to change with the "old boys" running the show, you're dreaming. They were indocrinated into it and they are gladly passing on the baton.
