When I was a kid, I was saying "up", but now it was pointed out to me (I think by a Carlton player actually) that it's "us".

It is UP, it has always been UP and I can't stand it when the actual players sing US ...it shits me to tears.

Compared to this crappyness...

"We've all the champions, they like to send US" (send us..? Where too?)
"We'll keep our ends UP"

with all the champions,
they like to send us
we'll keep our end up.

that's how I've always sung it since I was old enough to know the words.

The players wouldn't know shit.

It's 'up'.

You send players up to the firsts. These lyrics were written when the club had U17's, U19's, Reserves... the club had a whole tier of teams, of which the seniors were the pinnacle.

And it's keep our end up, not ends up.

Keeping your end up means keeping your part of the deal; not squibbing.

With all the champions
they like to send up
we'll keep our end up.

That's it. Trust me.

I always thought it was 'us".

With all the champions,
They like to send us,
We'll keep our end up.

ie. Other teams send champions to knock us off but our team holds their end up and triumph.

I'm a bit of a fence sitter on this one. I reckon I've used both over my 31 year Carlton supporting career.

Both of those theories sound valid.

They are sending "us" the champions, not sending "up" the champions.

Well I think anyway.

That's exactly how I have always interpreted it. You don't send champions UP from the seconds. Champions do not play there, they play in the seniors. It's US for mine!

Maybe there are two versions? Maybe the words changed somewhere along the line? What would constitute a definitive answer here? If you're talking ORIGINAL version, I guess the quest is to find the oldest possible record of said lyrics.

Spot on

No matter who they send in to play against us, we will keep our ends up.

And besides, why would you rhyme up with up?

They decided to rhyme 'blues' with 'blues' :-D

Anyway, if they were sending their champions against us, that's a very different sentiment to sending a champion to us. You wouldn't say 'with all the champions they like to send us' if you meant an opposition pitting their best against us'.

Whichever it is, surely it's better than 'our boys who play this grand old game, are always striving for glory and fame'. Easily the cheesiest (pre-Freo) lyrics ever. The tune's cheesy too - ragtime jazz was never, ever, acceptable.
