First Time I got to watch a Full Carlton VFL Game, thanks to Channel 7 mate!
OMG... What a disaster it was for me to find out that our VFL Team plays exactely the same way as our Seniors. Same Game Style or lack of it, Kicking the ball blindly into our 50 and the most shocking Fact is how Poor our kicking is...
We turned the ball over again and again and again....All of our young hopefulls can not kick the ball. The Campo Boys kept turning it over, Binns can't kick at all....
There was not a Single player that Deserved a go at AFL Level. Even Lemmy who is showing Signs is no where near AFL Level Yet!
There you go. I thought they moved the ball reasonably well, had great transition from defence to attack and showed some good signs. They beat a team above them on the ladder and have put themselves in finals contention.
Ben Campo was OK again. Lucas tries hard but needs to tidy up his finishing.
Once again Riley and Ethan Phillips (11 marks) were very good and I hope both get a rookie spot at least.
None of our listed players really stood out but they're playing competitive footy in a good system IMHO.
Monahan is a worry for me and I doubt he'll survive the cut at the end of the year. Has the size and athleticism but has too many brain fades. Duffy is showing very little but he's a great size and super athlete. I hope he gets another year.
Lemmey is a good target but offers nothing as a relieving ruck.
Durdin, White, Boyd, Wilson, Charleson were all OK and did their job. Binns had 28 but he's a poor mans Docherty IMO. Lots of lateral, useless possessions and slow our momentum down more than anything.
Credit to Luke Power. I know he has his critics here but he has the right approach. Develop the players and continue to provide opportunities in positions they'll be expected to play as AFL players. Coupled with obvious and well drilled ball movement. Winning is critically important but development should always take precedence.
As for promotion into the senior team, no one really jumped up this week demanding a spot but Charleson is putting together some consistent footy.
Based on my remarks in the rezzies thread I'd say our observations are mostly aligned. I liked what i saw from Monahan though, first time I've really noticed him one way or the other. Agreed he probably won't make the grade, maybe I don't share your "worry" because I never expect anything from Irish punts anyway
.
So yeah, good ball movement by hand, good run, overcooked kicks galore. And most importantly, they showed the mentality to arrest the big momentum swing against them and even managed to gut out a win. Overall, far more to like than hate.
