A true Carlton person.

Loved watching him play.

Loved hearing him speak.

Just as we brought Parkin back for a second stint at coaching we should have done the same with Wallsy.

Just found out. Another take: https://www.theguardian.com/sport/blog/ ... es-aged-74

This one really hurts for some reason. Never knew him. Ex-Carlton people will continue to pass but I was genuinely gutted on reading of his passing. I think he felt like one of those constants that would always be around. His media presence probably instilled this in me a bit.

Even though he wasn't the most impartial commentator, as much as he tried (I would struggle to be nice to Sheeds too ) his knowledge and wisdom was always worth a listen or read.

I echo the sentiment in a previous post that he wasn't guaranteed a flag just because of a super talented side in '87 (of course, it always helps). That Hawthorn team was no pushover. His nous was more obviously shown by the heights he took limited Fitzroy and Brisbane (even Richmond) teams to.

A slight tangent to his many achievements - would today's goal post technology grant him that freakish 'not-goal' in the last of the '70 GF that he furiously debated with the ump?

On a side note, I wasn't sure what to post in the 'what TC means to me' (or whatever) thread the other day. Here's my answer. I came straight here to commiserate about a Carlton figure that means more to me than I realised, one I took for granted. I'm actually a bit teary, which feels somewhat ridiculous, but there it is.

The school teacher went out with the same pragmatic attitude that his players feared, his media peers should have learnt from, and his teammates and coaches must have relished. It's been a blast but the final siren's gone and it's time to leave the field. Carry the flame without me.

Vale, Wallsie.

Played in a Premiership against Essendon*, Collingwood and Richmond.

Can it get any better than that ?

Probably not but it depends how you spread your hatred. Swan McKay is the only player in VFL/AFL history to play in three GF victories over Filthingwood.

I’m really choked up today
Just found out the news
They don’t make them like Wallsy anymore
Absolutely zero bullshit
Loved him as a player
Incredibly underrated
Great coach although he wouldn’t go down well today with all these softcock self-centred PC types we have to endure
He passed away with absolute class
It’s not about me
I have had a good life
That’s all class
RIP Wallsy

Very, very sad but in typical Wallsy fashion 'of bring your gloves' he did it the tough way.

vale Robert Walls!

The best CHF at Carlton I saw play, and if he was playing today would be just as good. I loved watching him play!

Ah, another champion of the revered Carlton Football Club goes.....

I'm gutted because as much as I didn't see a lot of his play, jI was awed by his record in the annals of VFL/AFL history

I used to think if I had the dream and privileg of playing VFL/AFL, I would want to be coached by Wallsy.......just so straight down the line

I have a story to share- in a match in 2012, I saw Wallsy sitting on the bench outside the MCG. I went to him and said my partner loved his analysis and commentary; and as a hearing impaired person, I valued his clear diction and description of the play. He stood up, extended his hand and said, "Thanks mate, really appreciate this- go Blues hey?!!!'

RIP Wallsy- condolences to his family and loved ones.

Well played

RIP Robert . A sad day for the Carlton Football Club . And a sad day for football . A major contributor on so many fronts .

I could type away here for hours about Rob ................. but a little story if I may which I will never forget and is testament to the sort of man Robert was . It goes back many many years ago when Robert was coaching Carlton . It was a huge match out at Waverly Park Collingwood V Carlton . Prior to the match my late mother inlaw ( a Collingwood supporter ) just happened to pull up in the carpark at the same time as Robert . As she alighted from her car she car she virtually bumped into Robert . They exchanged pleasantries and she asked him ever so politely would he mind if he could give her his autograph for her grandson . Robert was so polite and said he would be happy to do so . Robert naturally thought my late mother inlay was a Carlton supporter and asked he how do you think we will go today . My mother in her old world way politely told Rob I'm actually a Collingwood supporter . Rob had a great laugh at that and in his beautiful way continued the conversation in a civil and political manner . My late mother in law told that story right up till her dying day and always said what a lovely man Robert was . Just think pre match to a Collingwood V Carlton match what stress and pressure Rob was under , yet despite that he took the time out to be an absolute gentleman to a frail little old lady who happened to be a Collingwood supporter . That's testament to the quality and class of the man . I can't say anymore other than Rest In Peace in Blue Heaven .

The Carlton Football Club .............. Now Always Forever .

Great words Mick.

He was an exceptional human.

It’s a sad day but it’s also a great day where we get to acknowledge and pay respect to a genuinely good human being.

It’s funny but I look at the great and most influential coaches and as a club we’ve been truly blessed with Barassi, Parkin and Walls. Just great people without even considering their football contribution.

Not a Clarkson to be seen!

Keep breathing Parko…

Wallsy, you have been a captain and a coach for many of us in life, way beyond football.

You were a champion person, someone that people could not help but admire and look up to.

I began barracking for Carlton in the late 1960s, the same time that you began playing for the club.

I remember sitting next to you on a flight from Adelaide to Melbourne and discussing the likelihood of Carlton recruiting Bryce Gibbs with their first selection in 2006.

Thank you for the journey.

RIP

Yes , been reading articles in todays papers and the thing that comes through time and again is that although many of these people have all had there moments with Robert's prickly combative style they never lost there respect for the man .

Very sad news.
I was lucky enough to see him play, he was a great player.
He was very brave and went out on his own terms.
It has been a sad few weeks for Carlton people.

RIP Wallsy.

Monumental figure in Carlton and football history.

I was too young to see him play but absolutely loved him as a coach and media performer.

Have also loved the tributes which have suitably been immense.

An absolute straight shooter who was widely admired and respected.

I personally took great pride in the fact that he called out the Eagles (and to a lesser extent the Dockers) for all their BS. They hated him over here lol. He was public enemy no 1 for awhile. Warmed my blue heart
