We would have to change our mindset with this one. Mergers in the past have been seen as a last resort and come across as conceding defeat.
We would have to buy into this being a progressive move that is a step ahead of the pack. The sort of smart thinking that we have all been hoping for for years.
We would need the AFL not only onboard but prepared to throw in sweeteners. MCG home ground being one. Train at PP. Build two museums. One for each club.
Could easily get a jumper that suits both north and us.

The north of Melbourne will be ours from then on. We would be looking at Hawthorn like member numbers within 10 years.

I don't see this town being big enough for all of us. If we don't make the big call now, in 10-15 years EFC* will just gobble up North and St Kilda will be snapped up by the Hawks or the Pies.

We would have to make some small sacrifices and football will never be the same but it will be good.

PS imagine the 99' parties. The two clubs that won the premiership that year both combining as one. Romantic.

I agree club29. This should not be painted as conceding defeat, it should be considered us getting with the times (finally!) and making bold moves.

I for one wouldn't like to see us playing as the third WA team... but as a northern suburbs of Melbourne, stretching to to Northern Victoria club... absolutely!

Our 16 flags are misleading... we are a mid tier club in every sense of the word and if we're not careful, we will become a bottom tier club. We're just about there.

They would have to get the marketing right. Can't make this (as suggested by Synners) that it's two struggling clubs with no alternative, has to be sold (as club suggests) as a bold and smart move to make a Melb club to take on the Hawks, Pies and (god help us) the Bombers.

At the very least a threat to merge should see if the resistance is great enough to kick start some fire in the belly of the supporters. Hell, if a massive ugly battle doesn't ensue then it really does show the supporters are [REDACTED] as well.

Depends on the terms of the deal as well. These guys aren't building it out of the goodness of their heart. Not sure how it's set up but I assume that they are building and maintaining the joint for 20 odd years before handing it back. And for that they are either getting a quarterly payment direct from Government to defray their costs or are wringing as many moneymaking ventures out of the place as possible while they can. It's probably a combination of both. So they get amount x from Government each quarter. But they also get to charge ground hire fees to clubs who wish to use the facility. Plus they get to run the racket on any bars/restaurants in the place. I reckon it's a case of be careful what you wish for with new stadium deals.

Hawks, Pies and DrugCheats are so far ahead of us it's not even funny. Hawks claimed Tassie. Pies are talking about their own stadium. Scum are (nfi why) just massively supported and loved. We're just mediocre from board to boot studder, but just happen to have won a few more flags than we probably should have, mostly because of brown paper bags full of cash. Otherwise, we're just another Melbourne, Richmond and Geelong who have won 12, 10 and 9 flags respectively. That's where we sit. Can we ever be greater?

Collingwood have done really well moving to the Westpac centre and abandoning Victoria park. If someone dared propose Carlton did that they'd be lynched.

Hawks moved into Tassie. If someone suggested we play games there, they'd equally be lynched.

Essendon* injected their players with horse steroids to create an "us and them mentality" and galvanise its supporter base. If anyone suggested we do the same, they'd equally be lynched. (OK I'm obviously joking with this one. But they did move to Melbourne Airport for their new base centre).

Point is, other clubs have made moves that were considered "bold" at the time, and it's paying dividends. But if Carlton supporters like living in the 70's too much to entertain the idea of our own bold move... then whatevs. Let's just train at PP forever without trying to make the ground work for us, get reamed on stadium deals at Etihad, and keep watching re-runs of 1970. Wonderful.

More a marriage than a merge. In fact the spin doctors wont allow anyone to use the word merge if this were to happen.

It is going to take something huge to turn the club around. If not this sort of thinking then what are other ideas? Winning more than 4 games in a row might change things a little but I cant see a new board coming in and lifting us to the lofty heights of the Hawks, Pies and *. Not in the economic times that are about to hit.

Lets have some other big ideas folk ! Think big !

Build our own stadium.
Get back a home ground advantage by playing home games against interstate teams at Kardinia Park.
Bendigo / Ballarat ???

It's why I said in another thread we have to wait till everyone over 50 is dead - these people (me included probably) will never ever admit we are not what we were (and may never be again) a;; those shining cups - eight of them in my lifetime have killed us, we are the bloated, wobbling guts of a 8 flag gorge-fest...we need liposuction, not botox...we need the 5 2 diet not an abstinence from MacDonald's. We blame a coach, a rule change, a draft pick...not seeing the fire for the smoke! I don't know what the details are but you can rest assured that the public (footballing or taxpayer) will be paying for any mistakes in the contract.

The new stadium is located where it is make the Packer family happy and make that area of Perth slightly less dodgy.

The Casino offered to partly or wholly fund (depending on which proposal the govt selected) the building of the stadium a number of times but the WA Libs , in their infinite wisdom, said "no, we'll pay for the lot" based on the flimsiest logic in the history of state govt spending.i.e. if the casino paid for it then then the govt may be seen to be working too closely with a private firm and it might raise issues of impropriety. The govt then goes and pays for the stadium 100% and puts it exactly where the Casino wanted it anyway. :donk: :donk:

Just hope the govt is clever enough to not have tied an albatross around the neck of football in WA.
