I thought his picks have been very good. It's a relatively small % who haven't worked out, with many looking very good for the future.
Can't help but wonder what the real reasons are. Would seem the most likely would be the lack of autonomy and feeling like Carlton have been looking to replace him (poaching Hawks recruiter etc).
Hope things work out well for Shane. I think the recruiting he has been involved with for the last couple of years is setting a good foundation for the club's next 10.
To be fair I think it's too early to declare Shane's record as a success.
That's the problem with assessing recruitment performance - takes time to play out.
The process for getting a new recruiter should be the same as it is for getting a new head coach or a new boot studder:
Get the Best.
Do a search, and get the Best.
But that's not the Carlton way ...
Pagan gets sacked - just give Ratts a crack for a while!
So we sacked Ratts... what did we do next? Run straight to Mick.
Then we sacked Icke... what came next? Hey Doc McKay! see if you can have a crack at being Head of Footy!
And we sacked Hughes.... what did we do? Promoted his 2IC to jobshare for a while, then swapped them around, then played cat and mouse with the new head recruiter for the best part of 2 years, before eventually.. the final straw.
And after all the time we barracked for the club to get a list manager... finally the club heard us... and what process occurred exactly? We just decided to get SOS.
CAN'T BE ASSED !
ffs.
Compared to all that track record,
the hiring of Trigg almost seems like a best practice governance masterclass.
I've seen some good signs since the Judge took over ....
Here's hoping he will ensure that things get done the right way this time.
SOS better not get gifted the head recruiter title as well, or I'll be microwaving the membership ...
