I'd certainly take Mark Williams over Mick Malthouse.

I think Malthouse is a very risky choice.
In hindsight, I would have much prefered to keep Ratts - give him the final year and if we still hadn't improved, THEN get Roo's in 2014.

Getting Malthouse for 3 years is going to put us 3 years behind (that is, should we not win a premiership - which is clearly the goal).

This smells like Pagan all over again.

Are there any SANFL of WAFL coaches that are any good?

Nathan Bassett. Ex Crow, head coach of Norwood in the SANFL. Nothing but praise from all corners.

Wants to serve as an assistant at AFL level before he has a shot as an AFL head coach though.

Rumour is he'll be an assistant at Hawthorn next season.

Maybe he'll be the young, untried coach that Blueman says will take us to the next flag? .....along with WW3 playing out in the background.

Malthouse for a year with a successor already picked out as an assistant. It won't happen though, too Collingwood.

Interesting audio on SEN this morning.

It was of MM @ the Copeland Awards last year saying that he could "NEVER" coach against his "boys".

12 months is a long time in footy, it appears.

Yet would have against West Coast, and to a lesser extent Footscray on many an occasion.

Agree with looking at WAFL etc. it amazes me how much we focus on assistant coaches. Sheesh, some are lucky to move witches hats.

Focus should be on successful head coaches, who can display all the skills required to run a football team. By all means get experience as an assistant, but let's actually find out how they go in the role, dealing at all levels such as development, recruiting etc etc.
Let someone else do the on the job development for us .
And of course then there is the manic obsession in AFL that somehow only ex players have the necessary skills.

The good future head coaches are in the AFL as assistants because that's where the IP, money and innovation is.

I don't want Malthouse for a few of reasons.
Firstly he's greatly over rated as a game day coach.
Secondly he's going to be a financial burden, for his salary and everyone else he brings with him.
Thirdly and most importantly he's not interested in build in for the future of our club.
He's here only for the immediate future and not for the long term. He’s already flagging his intentions to recruit established players. That either costs money or draft picks and most definitely development of our own list.
We need someone who believes he can spend 10 years plus at the top and build accordingly.
