With our development, who's to say those blokes would've turned out any good for us?

I had my reservations when we got Judd.
New we were getting a great player.
New membership would be up.
Point is other players in the midfield havent stepped up enough. Too much has been left to him. That can happen if you have a superstar
Amfield hasnt been a bad pickup at 46

Also we gave up a heap to get him. Would rather have Dangerfield than Judd given their ages alone
Kennedy would be handy wouldnt he
And Selwood is a great tagger

Look its the long term picture

Judd has been fantastic for this club but the question is could it have been better if we didnt get him

For me the Answer is yes

Yeah, our recruiting is almost as bad as hawthorns. Imagine wasting top 10 picks on dowler, Mitch thorp and xavier Ellis. And they gave up two studs kennedy and mcglynn for nothing. No wonder the hawks are doing so badly on top of the ladder!

Also forgetting that we have done fantastic in the Rookie draft: Carazzo, Betts, Jameson, Garlet, Zach, etc.

See you miss the point
Hawthorn have had misses. They have had a lot of hits. More hits than misses.
Where the opposite

Sorry Keogh but Judd has brought so much more.
His leadership not only on the field but off has been phenomenal and priceless for our then young group.
The marketing for the club and not only for membership has been repaid by the truckload.
I think also brought some belief and respect back to us (at the time).
I also believe he fast forwarded the maturity of our playing group at the time and once he has slowed down or retired that is when his true value on the group will be more apparent.
Five years ago we were a basket case and needed some thing extraordinary to lift us out in a short space of time Judd was it.
I think we have come a long way because of him it’s just that there have been other factors that have seen us falter in more recent times.

the counter argument is we havent had a power forward since Fevola was turfed. We put a couple of years of development into Kennedy. For what. Dangerfield is a gun.So is Selwood. We could have had a young squad developing together.

In short if we dont win a flag with Judd the deal is a failure

We know Stephen Wells is a gun but he is locked in.

I actually have a high opinion of Rogers. Knows his stuff. IMO he has been influenced too much by the coaching staff.

The best coaches let the recruiters pick the best players. I hope we have 5-6 picks this year.

If so, the first 3-4 should be picked on the best available criteria with an emphasis on kicking, size and decision making. We need more quality depth around midfield.

The others then should lean towards need if POSSIBLE as dictated by consultations with Coach and Football Manager. A young ruckman ala Jacobs.

The two picks that bug me are Kruezer/Cotchin and Rowe/Murdoch but we cant do anything about it now. I also still miss Kennedy but getting Judd was correct IMO.

From now on we should have a minimum 4-5 picks in the draft, pick kids and be tougher on our average players and cut them. List needs to keep turning over and getting better every year.

So simple.

.and maybe we could go back in time and inseminate a selected few women with the sperm of Jezza, Walls, and Southby.

Really? wow, the season not even over and we've had our first "if my aunty had balls she'd be my uncle" post.

You just cannot apply hindsight to such a selective thing as the draft.

As for trades, you can only be judged on what the the pick you've traded is used for. You mention Warnock. Well Freo passed on all those players you mentioned and selected Suban

McLean - Melbourne passed on all those players and chose Gysberts

West Coast - they missed all those players and selected Masten and Notte

Hampson - there were 14 other selections before Tippet. Check some of the brilliant picks before Tippett
Leroy Jetta Essendon*
Shaun Grigg Carlton
Tom Hislop Essendon*
Gavin Urquhart North Melbourne
Albert Proud Brisbane
Paul Stewart Port Adelaide
Brent Renouf Hawthorn
Nathan Djerrkura Geelong
Shane Edwards Richmond
Brad Howard St Kilda
Chris Dawes Collingwood
Eric MacKenzie West Coast
Ricky Petterd Melbourne
Clayton Collard Fremantle

Austin - again, 13 selections before your recommended selection of McKay
Mark Austin Carlton
Alwyn Davey Essendon*
Todd Goldstein North Melbourne
James Hawksley Brisbane
Nathan Krakouer Port Adelaide
Josh Kennedy Hawthorn F/S
Tom Hawkins Geelong F/S
Bachar Houli Essendon*
Tim Houlihan West Coast
Brad Dick Collingwood
Brennan Stack Western Bulldogs
Colin Garland Melbourne
Kyle Reimers Essendon*

Then theres the good old "why didn't we draft Joel Selwood".

Ask these clubs the same question.

2 Scott Gumbleton Essendon*
3 Lachlan Hansen North Melbourne
4 Matthew Leuenberger Brisbane
5 Travis Boak Port Adelaide
6 Mitch Thorp Hawthorn

I've done a swag of analysis on the draft and Carlton's performance which I'm hoping to finalise and post on soon. But I do know that there isn't as much science to it as people want to think there is and every club has had as many massive failures as they have had success.

There are always exceptions to the rule and NicNat is definitely one but he is a very special and RARE case.
