Intra was last night, RR has a brief report for us in TalkingNorthern. Searched high and low I see. :P

Searched Carlton and Training...didn't think a Carlton intra would be under Northern

I agree that we need to get better at this but think we are employing more avenues to goal:

1) the bomb, aim that hampson or other talls can mark (eg. Eddie the Eagle  ) or smalls crumb (eg. Eddie the Eel... :smoking: )

2) spot up a leading forward, eg. Waite, Eddie (eg. Murphy spotting Simpson, I think?)

3) garlett's paddock

We can also come from out wide or go up the middle.

Match was sub-VFL standard but quite entertaining.

Jamison and Duigan are ready to go for next week - both looked great.

Kerr, Ellard and Warnock were back. Ellard was a ball magnet as usual. Kerr got a fair bit of it but didn't use it as well as Ellard.

Warnock won lots of taps against smaller opposition and Ellard collected many of them - trouble being that he was on the opposing team in the first half.

AJ was good. Rowe was given a bath by Jamo. Watson was matched up on the VFL reserve grade resting ruckmen so didn't have much opposition and, as usual, didn't dominate as one might have hoped he would.

McInness was decent. Heyne and Carter weren't. Bootsma was okay. No other AFL listed players.

Jamo, Duigan, Warnock and Ellard also did a bunch of extra running after the game, which was only 4 x 15 minutes.

One of the defenders will come in, that being Jamison. No point being Duigan in yet. Let him have another game or two. Defence is function well, no need to bring in two blokes lacking game time. One's definitely and that has to be Jamison, who generally goes well first up.

Jamison for Russell this week. Some will be stiff when Duigan and Walker are ready. We tried Bower on a wing at times pre-season, and he went well enough, with a view to doing that at times during the season proper. In current form that may happen once both Jamison and Duigan come in.

Wonder if we'll surprise everyone, including us, and play Jamison at CHF. In the very short time he's been forward he looked born to play there. Looked a true Carlton forward too kicking lots of points...lol! It's always been something in the back of the coaches mind. Can be done given the form of the backmen.

To do so would probably require dropping Thornton. (Lack of second ruck would make Hampson required). Be a brave, bordering on unnecessary move for mine.

Otherwise, we'd probably go in too tall against a side with as many midfield rotations as any in the competition.

Big game for us (stating the obvious). The pieces of the jigsaw are definitely falling into place. The one serious question I still have (and have posted about previously) is our system going forward. The default game plan still seems to be kick it high and hope for a mark or a crumb. Even last night, that was how we played until Brisbane eventually just fell apart, and their lack of anything down back meant we could spot up loose players. It works well enough against the poorer teams, but against the top teams, with good defences which know when to peel off and play the extra man at the contest, it doesn't work. It's one of the major reasons why we couldn't kick winning scores against the top 4 last year.

At the moment, it seems to me we are winning because we have great talent, pace, ex-factor on all lines, and a hardness at the ball that is impressive. I don't see as yet the tight system that the top teams have.

Can't wait for Friday night to see how we go against quality opposition (admittedly with talent out or underdone). Bring it on!

Most clubs are going in long and high hoping for a mark or crumb and also the the 3rd option of a stoppage deep inside 50 so they could set up the press and score a goal as the oppostion tried to find space to get the ball out of their defensive 50. We score a large chunk of our score this way. Against brisbane our contested ball and our press was so good we hit the scoreboard hard and the press also made it hard for them to get any system. SO hard they only scored 3 goals after 1/4 time.

Although bombing it in to a tall or even eddie may look like a bland attack i feel it really sets us up a lot of our score.

Our system is built around our strength. Winning contested ball. All our losses last year were because we were beaten in contested ball.
If we win it and get the ball in deep the opposition will struggle from that point and we are far more likely to score than them.

I think our system looked pretty tight against the bears. They got through our press early due to poor tackling efforts and we struggled with the slippery ball. We tweaked our gameplan at 1/4 time and they could no longer get through and from their our system was awesome.

THis week against the maggies we get a look at whether our system holds up against one of the best and a team that designed most of our system.

Cant wait to watch it unfold.

Siegfried with the zone forwards cannot find space to lead into.
It's like basketball or soccer if you can't go through you have to go around or over.
This is the reason we switch play for one and now with our talls been fit you pop the ball deep up over a defenders head for the forward to use as a step ladder or for it to come to ground for the crumbers.
At the very least you can force a stopage and let our exctractors at it.

If Jamo is right to come in this week, I'd expect a taller player to be dropped. Otherwise, I think our team balance is upset.

I suppose then it becomes a choice between Bower & T-Bird. Either would be unlucky. Bower probably has a slight edge in current form, but T-Bird's ability to play both ends makes him harder to drop, IMO.

If Jamo needs another week, give it to him. It's more important for him to be set up for a long season than play Round 3 (even if it is against Collingwood).

And I'd rather persist with JR for another week than rush Duigan back...

Tuohy Jamo/Bower Laidler
Yarran Hendo JR
Simmo Judd Scotland
Carrazzo Waite Garlett
Betts Hammer Robbo

Kreuzer Gibbs Murphy

Curnow Lucas T-Bird
Armfield (sub)

I think Bower is a better fallback on Cloke or Dawes than T-Bird.

I'd expect JR out for Jamo only at this stage, Army possibly for Duigan, but Army could be a good matchup for Thomas.
